Can You Name This Classic Sports Team Logo?

1.6K Shares

What is it with sports logos that we find so interesting? Is it the easy fact that we like what people come up with to represent our favorite teams, or do we like the historical trends that can be seen in these logos? Or, do we simply like the swag effect that comes with a snapback of a logo from the 1960s?

Whatever it is, sports fans love - or, in the case of the continued use of Native Americans as symbols, hate - their logos. Today, you'll be tasked with looking at 35 classic sports logos and naming the team that used it.

So for transparency, now is when we should clarify something. When you take this quiz, you'll realize that some logos have a classic name in them; the goal is then to figure out which team that classic team became. For example, if we were to include a New York Highlanders logo (we did not) that had the team's name, you would be correct if you answered 'New York Yankees.'

Also, there will be logos here that, admittedly, are caricatures of Native Americans (if you're confused on what that means, look up the debate about the Redskins name). This quiz is not intended to take a stand on if they should be allowed or not; all we're doing today is trying to showcase history through sports logos. If you have a problem with the history of a Native American logo from the 1960s being discussed, maybe this isn't the quiz for you.

Otherwise, this is pretty simple. If you think you're up to the test, we wish you luck!

Question 1

Which team had this logo?

We start this quiz off with...I don't really know how to describe this other than it being a bearded man with a basketball in one hand and what looks like a pickaxe in the other? Why would someone need a pickaxe while they're playing basketball? Is that Draymond Green's new strategy to handle LeBron James? What's interesting about this logo is that it comes from a time when beards and facial hairs were first fully being accepted, yet he has the modern-day mountain man look. Which team had this logo?

Question 2

Which team had this logo?

Well, we go from whatever...that...was to a logo that I actually really like. Here, we have the baseball logo model that became popular in the 1960s and 1970s - once we could use red again after the whole Red Scare incident - where black and white was combined with darker shades of red. With a pinstriped player swinging and a sock in the background, the answer to this one should be pretty easy. But, was it the Red Sox or the White Sox?

Question 3

Which team had this logo?

Alright, this one is pretty badass if I do say so myself. With the 3D rendering of a pissed off animal ready to impale you with its horns, I see no reason why we shouldn't include it on this quiz. Between the aforementioned horns and those furious red eyes, how can you hate this logo? I mean, maybe a vegan or two might, but they're strange people. Hopefully, you're not strange enough to where you can't solve this one with ease.

Question 4

Which team had this logo?

Ah, our first of the 'Native American replica' logos that will be on this list. As I stated in the intro, I'm not making this quiz into a public forum to debate if these logos should be allowed or not; all I'm doing is trying to showcase history through sports logos. Here, we have a fairly tame logo as a Native American is traveling on horseback with a spear. Considering what other logos we've gotten, yes, this is tame. Which team had this logo?

Question 5

Which team had this logo?

There will always be three constants in sports logos: patriotism, Native Americans, and animals. Here, we have the fantastic image of a *animal name hidden because it would spoil the question* leaving a helmet behind as it chases after its prey. We can't answer if this led to blood being spilled on the field, but we can say that this is a pretty sweet logo we'd love to see the team reuse today. Speaking of that team, any ideas on who used this?

Question 6

Which team had this logo?

Alright, so maybe we lied in that last section because there's actually four constants in sports logos: patriotism, Native Americans, animals, and birds. But, that goes without saying because look how many professional and collegiate teams name their programs and organizations after birds! I like the eye design here - it reminds me somewhat of the current Carolina Panthers design - but the facial expression has a bit of a charm to it. Which team wore this logo with pride?

Question 7

Which team had this logo?

Yeehaw! Imagine a team wanting to use this logo today with the pirate look, cowboy boots, and two guns firing? This is one of those logos that speaks for themselves, though I love the crazy, gunslinger pose that this man is using. Look at his hat falling! I'm a big fan of those pants too, though commentating on anything else would likely mean that I'd spoil what the answer is. Before our gun-toting friend puts me down, can you get the answer right?

Question 8

Which team had this logo?

No, this is not a caricature of Mike Tyson as a Native American, though we don't blame you for thinking that. Is this the most offensive Native American caricature I've seen yet? It's definitely up there, but it may not even be the worst of this quiz. It was a different time in the 50s and 60s, kids. Anyways, while you contemplate the meaning of why someone would make this their logo, why not take a guess as to which team used it?

Question 9

Which team had this logo?

One of the funnier logos on here, how can one hate on Tim Tebow - I mean, the friar helplessly swinging a bat in hopes of making contact and hitting a home run. This is another logo that goes back to what I meant earlier about organizations wanting to use a heavy influx of red when they were 'allowed' to, but I'm not really a fan of this one. Regardless if you like it or not, can you figure out who used this?

Question 10

Which team had this logo?

I don't know what there really is to say about this one; I could argue that it looks like a cloud and you could argue that it more so resembles a crown, but it's definitely hard to tell with the way this logo was designed. At least, my awful-but-still-better-than-yours eyes think it's difficult to tell. Still, I don't mind the effort and the NBA is a nice touch from a forgotten era, but we've certainly seen weirder. Any guesses on which team used it?

Question 11

Which team had this logo?

I normally wouldn't associate birds with Texas - it's the Lone Star State with cowboys, cowboy hats, and cowboy boots - but this logo of the one-time ABA Texas franchise does include a bird. Who would have thought? The Chapparals played in the American Basketball Association and began their play in Dallas, but changed their name to Texas after a move to Fort Worth. By the time they joined the NBA, they'd ditched that name entirely. Which team did the Chaparrals and their logo eventually become?

Question 12

Which team had this logo?

Now this is an interesting one for reasons that will most certainly surprise you. In fact, I think this is the one that most people will get wrong because, let's face it, you want to say that it's the Toronto Blue Jays. Maybe it is! But, think about your options here. Personally, I like the stance of this bird as it's going to peck out the eyes of the opposing players. Before you get YOUR eyes pecked out, can you get the answer right?

Question 13

Which team had this logo?

Another one that should be fairly easy given its presence on snapbacks, this logo mixes a star with what appears to be a trident. Unfortunately, Aquaman - the Iron Fist of the DC Universe - appears to be nowhere in sight, though I think he'd enjoy the city in question. There's a good chunk of water nearby. Anyways, I'm a fan of this logo and I wouldn't be surprised if you are too, but I WOULD be surprised if you get this wrong.

Question 14

Which team had this logo?

So, you know that one guy at the bar who claims to be a veteran of all these crazy nights and parties, but you never really want to listen to him because he smells like garbage and he has an eyepatch? Apparently, he got made into a sports logo! I don't have many qualms with this logo, though the earrings do seem a bit unnecessary. We get it! He's some type of scoundrel. Do you want to take any guesses on who he is?

Question 15

Which team had this logo?

Yet another of the 'the Red Scare is over so we can use red' logos, My personal reasons for liking this logo, honestly, are because the player in question is simultaneously running alongside the animal; we get the feeling of empowerment and pride that the player is demonstrating by channeling his inner animal...or, something like that. With the team who once used it having some current boring logos, I'd like to see them bring this one back one day. Which team is that?

Question 16

Which team had this logo?

And now, we go from some really fantastic logos to...something pretty bland. I mean, there's so many creative ways to involve birds with basketball and while I respect the effort, it looks like something straight out of Looney Tunes. Granted, I shouldn't critique other's artwork because I myself can't even draw stick figures, but I'd have expected a bit more given the creative period that was the late 1960s. As I contemplate my own lack of skill, you should contemplate what the answer is.

Question 17

Which team had this logo?

Finally, we're back to some good logos - and man, do I love this one. Not only does this have charm, but it hearkens back to a time where no one questioned anything but the looks. Between the sword in the mouth, the fantastic hat, and the mustache, would you really want to mess with this guy? He's almost like Fernando Martinez from Grand Theft Auto, except I would feel much more comfortable around our friend here. Which team used this guy?

Question 18

Which team had this logo?

I actually enjoy this one and not because it appears to be an old man attempting to be a wizard playing with a giant ball. There's some sort of innuendo there that I'm not touching. Anyways, this logo definitely has that aforementioned narm charm, especially with the proportion of that basketball. I mean, anything has to be better than that awful Atlanta Hawks logo from earlier. As you think about those proportions, also try to think about which team would have used this logo.

Question 19

Which team had this logo?

For as bland as this logo is - seriously, it's nothing more than a hockey stick being extended - there's some major humor to this one if you look well enough. This logo reminds me of the one scene from 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' where Frank and the Charlie doll are in the bathroom of Paddy's Pub. As I go to find that scene on YouTube and then binge more Sunny, you should focus on answering this question correctly.

Question 20

Which team had this logo?

When I first saw this logo some years ago, I admittedly found it to be bland - not as bland as that Canucks logo from question 19, but still bland. Now? I've come to really appreciate this logo, especially with that attack pose that slightly resembles the current Carolina Panthers logo. Once the ball is snapped, you know that this guy is going to sink his claws into the opposing linemen and rip them to shreds. Which team would use such a bold and badass logo?

Question 21

Which team had this logo?

What is there to say about this retro logo other than it looks like what you'd see on a ticket stub? Yeah, the quarterback has a cool pose and there's some nice detailing with his jersey and helmet, but that's really all we can say. Even then, I like it! It's short, simple, and to the point; we don't need anything elaborate other than to know that this is a football team ready to dominate. Which team used this logo?

Question 22

Which team had this logo?

Have you ever seen the cutaway from 'Family Guy' where Chester Cheeto, the mascot of the Cheetos brand, is listening to music while snorting cocaine? For as off-putting of a sight as that may be, this is almost what this guy looks like. Either he's really angry, he's in shock, or he's been treating himself to some nose candy. Hopefully, it's one of the first two - and if it was the third, we hope he's getting help - and we hope that you can get this one right.

Question 23

Which team had this logo?

This really looks like a television network's logo rather than one of a sports team. Seriously, you have the company's acronym or main letter in a circle with some kind of adjoining gear or distinctive feature, this time with a feature. Unfortunately, this is not a network's logo, but that one of a sports team, so I can't pitch my ideas about how to make sports shows that appeal to kids. If you get this right, maybe I'll let you in on my ideas...

Question 24

Which team had this logo?

Earlier on, we mentioned that you'd have to tell us the team that a logo with the team name would turn into, so prepare to tell us who the New York Titans became. As for this logo itself, it's nothing too fancy - it fits the 50s and 60s mold of a player in uniform running - but their uniforms are so much better. Google New York Titans uniforms when you're done here - which, given that I told you how to answer this, should be now!

Question 25

Which team had this logo?

There's a joke to be made here about broken wings, but I'll save that for later. An alternate logo for this baseball team, it's a simple piece of art that also looks like arms raised in the sky; it's not perfect, but I like it as an ALTERNATE logo. If this was the main, primary logo that we'd see everywhere, I can't say I'd feel the same way. I do know what I'll feel if you get this one right, though.

Question 26

Which team had this logo?

So here, we have Buccaneer Bruce's cousin trying to lead the way to the promised land with a basketball in the background. Yeah, I like this a lot. Even if we can't see the guy's face, the shot of him leading his men on a journey to the ultimate goal - with that goal included in the logo itself - is actually brilliant. But, are you brilliant enough to get this question right on the first try? If you're not, you get left behind.

Question 27

Which team had this logo?

We're headed back to our nation's capitol and, thankfully, not going on trial. James Comey, if you're here, get back to your on trial. This is a relatively simple logo, only featuring the DC initials locked together, but it works. Too many teams try to go for elaborate when something simple works! Before trying to protest outside of the Washington monument or hop the White House fence, please at least try to get this one right. We would really appreciate it...

Question 28

Which team had this logo?

Again, we're going with a city logo (Houston) that's pretty simple; it's a star - as in the Lone Star State - with red and orange shading. I don't know how someone can't like this and while the team who used it in the past has some interesting logos now, I find myself hoping they'll bring this back one day. Yes, I'm aware that's a common theme with me. I like nostalgia! Which team will hopefully see the sight and bring this back?

Question 29

Which team had this logo?

Yet another baseball logo, but seriously -- how can you have anything against this one? We have a politician - one who looks like Benjamin Franklin, for some reason - winding up to throw a baseball from the mound. If that is indeed Benjamin Franklin, what is his correlation to sports? Anyways, this is definitely a cool throwback logo, one that is another of the 'hey, we can use red again' logos! If I'm you, I'd make sure to get this right.

Question 30

Which team had this logo?

We've hit yet another simplistic logo, though this one uses shadows and mystery. How interesting. Concealed within a big C (and no, we're not talking about cancer), this animal is holding something - a bat, maybe? - and has his eye on something. Poachers? Hunters? The government allowing poachers and hunters onto the field? Whatever it is, we don't want to know, but we do want you to know the correct answer to this. Trust us, the answer is not as difficult as we're making it out to be.

Question 31

Which team had this logo?

Do you remember about a decade ago (and trust me when I say that I'm feeling so old when I write this) when hip hop producers and DJs would play those random sound effects on the air? That's what I'm hearing when I look into the sunglasses of this elephant. With bats below his trunk and a look of pure indifference, this elephant is ready to run you over THEN bash your head in. Which team used such an unintentionally violent logo?

Question 32

Which team had this logo?

Our final bird on this list - and even I'll admit that there were fewer than I expected when I first began my research - this logo has a bird carrying a football, so we know it's an NFL logo. If you have any sense of bird knowledge or you know the colors of NFL teams, this one should really be between the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles. So, which team used this as a logo prior to their current logo?

Question 33

Which team had this logo?

We're down to three left, so this may be make or break time for some of you. If that's the case, we wish you luck. If it's not, then we still wish you some luck. Here, we have a horse on the attack, neighing as it prepares to run someone over like the aforementioned elephant. Some of these logos are surprisingly more violent than I would have thought. Which classic logo was this? If you watch football, this one should be easy.

Question 34

Which team had this logo?

Easily among the best logos on this list, I don't know if there's any critique or explanation of this other than it's a baseball in a mitt. Considering that the team in question still uses this logo in the modern day on throwback uniforms and the merchandise they sell, you really should not be getting this one if you're a baseball fan. Seriously. Please. Which team uses the classic baseball in a mitt logo? And no, it's not the New York Yankees.

Question 35

Which team had this logo?

We began with a basketball logo and we finish...with a baseball logo. Looking like a hybrid of Charlie Sheen and Beast Boy from Teen Titans, this demented...thing...is preparing to swing and is even about to pull off a leg kick in the process. Home runs will fly out of the park if this Eddie Gaedel-look-alike can even make contact! For the final question of this quiz, can you figure out which of the teams below ever used this guy as their logo?
