Can You Name These Sexy Cosplay Characters?

One of the best things about cosplaying is that it allows people the chance to show off their individuality, while also tipping their hat to a character or series that has followed them through their lives. We're all passionate about things, and showing people how passionate we are can feel really great. However, there's another reason that people like looking up cosplayers, and that's because they're often based on sexualization.

Seriously, I'm fairly sure that unless they're underage, pretty much every nerdy character has been sexually cosplayed at some point in the past, and I wouldn't even put it past some fans to explain that by now, that underage character is actually all grown up...

If you're not into the nerd lifestyle or don't want to go out in costume, you can always enjoy the sexy cosplayers from the comfort of your own home like a lot of others do. Do you think you'll be able to look past the women underneath the costume and figure out who these people are meant to be dressed as? Do you know enough about nerd culture to understand who it is that they're referencing? It's time to see what you're made of when it comes to nerdy entertainment and half dressed women!

Question 1

Who Is This?

For those of you who don't know, Lollipop Chainsaw was actually written as a satire/parody of the way video games treat women. While this woman may be a sexualized character, she chooses to be sexualized like that. She wears what she wears and acts how she acts because she wants to. She's also incredibly smart, strong and is always following the path that she wants to be following. She's never following other people's direct orders. Not a perfect female character, but a good one.

Question 2

Who Is This Meant To Be?

For some reason, Pokemon fans really latched onto the female characters. Ever since her appearance in both the games and the anime, men have wanted to be with her and women have wanted to cosplay as her. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that a man has cosplayed as this woman as well, but it certainly seems that women tend to do it more. Regardless, when women do cosplay as her, they often make the outfit a lot more sexualized than it originally was.

Question 3

Who Are They Meant To Be?

See, this is just one of the other characters from Mortal Kombat that could be any of the female characters, but wearing green clothes rather than blue or purple. I'm sure there's some story reason for this, but I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't. Let's just say that there is a reason in-universe, I really don't think that this is a good enough excuse. I don't wear the same clothes as my family, you know what I mean? If these girls are sisters, it still doesn’t sit well with me.

Question 4

Who Is This Meant To Be?

I actually enjoy how many male characters we can find on this quiz because it shows that the fans aren't going to let themselves be shackled by something as fluid as gender. Shout out to a lot of the video gaming community for that first of all. Now, while this guy/gal may have started in comic books, there's no way you can tell me that the X-Men aren't now better known for their film and video game installments. That being said, they’re all terrible.

Question 5

Who Is This?

When you played Pokemon, which starter Pokemon did you choose? I never really went for the fire Pokemon. I was always a water Pokemon man. As I said before, it's amazing to watch a woman take a Pokemon character and make them sexual. It takes a lot of work to take a character made to be cutesy and child-friendly and make them sexy. It's a little more than just add boobs if you ask me. I might be wrong, but I feel like this time could be a lot better spent.

Question 6

Who Is This?

Of all the Batman characters, this woman is one of my favorites. There's something really unsettling about someone that has been turned into a villain. They didn't use brainwashing or drugs, they're just so charming and so disarming that they've managed to bring a good person onto their side. Then, you get to watch the person they've turned live a conflicted life.

Question 7

Who Is This Meant To Be?

Okay, so this one doesn't really seem to be putting too much effort into it. Essentially, if you've got big breasts you can throw on a onesie, keep the zip low and call yourself a cosplayer. Fundamentally, I'm alright with it, but I don't know how I feel about this routine of sexualizing Pokemon. They're cute little animals, not humans or anthropomorphic monsters. Most Pokemon are more like animals than they are humans! Not that I’m judging anyone who is into that obviously.

Question 8

Who Are They Meant To Be?

So, let's start by saying that if you play video games, and you've yet to play Nier: Automata, stop whatever you're doing today and go buy that game. It is one of the greatest games I've played in the past decade and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is sick of the standard video gaming experience. I have never played anything like Nier: Automata, apart from the first Nier game that is.

Question 9

Who Are They Meant To Be?

While you could find out in the early games about this character's gender, you had to complete the game with an insane amount of percentage collected to ever see the secret. Now, it's just common knowledge that she is a woman within a giant suit. Now, in games like Smash Bros, we actually get to play as her outside of her protective suit and see what sort of moves she's got left once they take her out.

Question 10

Who Are They Meant To Be?

I'll be honest, I never played the Devil May Cry games for the women. Not to be sexist, but they were hardly the greatest characters in the world. Neither were the male characters either! Devil May Cry is not a franchise that you play for the story. These people spent so long on the gameplay of their games that they clearly didn't leave enough time to write a proper narrative. That being said, the gameplay is so perfect that I can excuse the poor story.

Question 11

Who Is This?

Of all the characters that I wish I'd put more time into, this guy is right at the top of the list. I have read none of the comics, never watched the film and have yet to try the moderately well-received game. Plus, the fact that he has to wear a mask because he’s grotesque rather than to hide his identity makes for a change that I enjoy. Of all the character design within comics, this guy has got one of the best, and it all started as a parody!

Question 12

Who Are They Meant To Be?

What we're looking at here is the rare example of a woman cosplaying a female character from a video game that isn't proportioned like an anorexic model. It's nice to know that some people still play games for the well written female characters, rather than to ogle women who couldn't possibly exist in the real world. Sure, you can dress up like a gothic Barbie if you want, but I'm going to dress up like the characters that are well written.

Question 13

Who Are They Meant To Be?

Look, if you don't get this one right, you've not been playing enough video games. Even as time has passed and the video game world has become obsessed with women's chests, this series has refused to sexualize any of their characters. That won't stop the fans from doing it though, as you can plainly see from the photograph. Oh well, at least people have got an imagination. Better than doing the same character over and over again, right?

Question 14

Who Are They Meant To Be?

I never realized that you could make these enemies look sexy. I suppose I underestimated how people can take anything and turn it into something sexy. Look at Halloween. You've got women dressed up as a sexy version of a zombie. You're literally looking at a sexualized version of a rotting corpse. Our brains are weird, aren't they? We're the only kind of species that would do something like that. You won’t see any tigers attracting other tigers by draping themselves in dead tigers.

Question 15

Who Are They Meant To Be?

Like most fighting games, Mortal Kombat usually uses women as either grotesque monsters or an excuse to show off how well the character designers can draw breasts. For some reason, fighting games get away with this a lot more than most other genres. Everyone is guilty of this sadly, but fighting games are definitely the worst culprit. Seriously, go and take a look at exactly how many fighting games there are that cater purely to teenage boys. Pretty ridiculous.

Question 16

Who Are They Meant To Be?

I never really got behind Final Fantasy as a franchise, so I can't really speak for how well they write female characters. I did play parts of the game in which this woman appeared, and if I remember correctly, she essentially runs around and talks like a little girl. I'm not saying that some women aren't like that, but it hardly feels like a progressive way to characterize women. Then again, who is to say exactly how women should act?

Question 17

Who Are They Meant To Be?

Okay, so this is one of the more modern controversies surrounding female characters in video games that I completely understand. Take a look at the furor that followed this character on the internet and you tell me if you don't feel like some of the work that went into explaining why she wears barely anything went way too far. However, Quiet has become a fan favorite and the controversy hasn’t stopped people from cosplaying as her. Believe it or not, even men have managed to do it.

Question 18

Who Is This Meant To Be?

Don't know about you guys, but I found this game interesting but flawed. Remember Me gave you the ability to personalize your combat options as much as you wanted, which is something you don't often see in games. However, it was just too boring. While the gameplay wasn't particularly up to scratch, I found the character to be really interesting. She wasn't ridiculously proportioned, she was strong and she spent a lot of time making sure people didn't kick her around.

Question 19

Who Is This Meant To Be?

Yes, now we're getting into the territory of swapping genders, so we can discuss the feminist issues that crop up once you start to take male characters but place their clothes on top of a body with large breasts. At that point, you're not really making a statement more than just wearing similar clothes to a previously male character, but making them more revealing. I’m not saying women can’t dress up as male characters or vice versa, I just think there are better ways of doing it.

Question 20

Who Are They Meant To Be?

Now we're getting into the various characters within Mortal Kombat that I often categorize as being pretty much exactly the same. Sure, they've managed to give them their own stories and added little details that differentiate them, but they're all just women with the same sorts of bodies and slightly different weapons. Oh, and their clothes are different colors as well. I suppose their move sets are different as well, but it still strikes me as lazy, especially when you look at some of their other characters.

Question 21

Who Are They Meant To Be?

Believe it or not, I actually like the idea of a woman who goes around brutalizing people with a set of fans. I don't know if someone has actually used a set of fans as weapons in real life, either by reinforcing them or using their shape but different materials, although I doubt it. A fan is one of the most flimsy objects that I have ever held in my hand, so how exactly are you going to kill someone with them? You’ve got like one good slash before they crumble.

Question 22

Who Is This?

I spent a lot of my youth playing the Jak and Daxter series. While I never had any feelings for this character, I have to admit that some of the character designs awakened something in my teenage body. Seriously, go look them up and try and tell me you wouldn't have been into that when you were like thirteen. It's weird what sort of stuff you find attractive before your tastes start to mature. It's sort of the same with food and booze when you think about it.

Question 23

Who Is This?

Believe it or not, every single one of the characters listed below has appeared in a Mortal Kombat game at some point. Now, that is some smart advertising if I've ever seen it. Some of them were actually really good characters as well, with interesting and powerful move sets. However, Michael Myers and Leatherface don't make for very good fighters. There are not many moves you can make out of swinging a knife or a chainsaw. Plus, they're giant lumbering characters. Their character designs are not exactly ripe for fluid animation.

Question 24

Who Is This?

This has been pointed out in the past, but I'm fairly sure that this woman is based almost entirely on a Playboy bunny. What better way to get people to buy your game than to design an entire character around a magazine that so many people already do buy. It's shameless really, but then I suppose that trying to get someone to spend their money on something has never been a virtuous way to spend your life. That’s just how it is unless you work for a charity.

Question 25

Who Are They Meant To Be?

I think that Bioshock Infinite might be the first significant example for a very long time of a video game that went down in cultural appreciation almost as soon as a year had passed after it's initial release. While it did have its detractors at first, it wasn't until after, that those people who had previously claimed the game was borderline perfection went on to admit that they had been entirely wrong. I personally haven't got back to it for fear of ruining the run I had with it previously

Question 26

Who Is This?

I've only ever played Street Fighter II, so I don't really know that much about the entire franchise. However, I would imagine that like all fighting games, they take liberties with the body proportions of the females, along with exactly what counts as covering up. Bear in mind that these people are supposed to be dressing up to fight and you really see how ridiculous clothing like this is. Why do men get full body armor while women get a couple of lengths of cloth?

Question 27

Who Is This?

Who knew that you could take the drab character design of the Assassin Creed games and make it even slightly interesting? I mean, at least they started to make their clothing enjoyable to look at in the later games, but in the first couple, it was a chore to get through the game because you had to look at the back of the same white cloth for hours. You could change it up with some clothing dye but it still stayed the same block color.

Question 28

Who Are They Meant To Be?

If you're anything like me, you wonder how it's possible to turn a holographic AI into a sexualized human being. However, long before the audience was doing it through lewd drawings and cosplay attempts, the makers of Halo managed to get the ball rolling in-game. This character is meant to be a robotic AI that helps you along your journey. Why would they have to be programmed to look like a naked woman? It just doesn't make any sense!

Question 29

Who Is This?

As I've already said, fighting games really do not treat their female characters well when it comes to their personality or their proportions. However, another thing about fighting games is that once you've got the gameplay down, you're free to use any remaining man hours on fleshing out a story for every single character. In a lot of ways, the fighting game genre can be used to create character studies, but they often don't use the chance that they’re handed.

Question 30

Who Is This?

Oddly enough, I reckon the women in Uncharted are written rather well. Sure, they're not breaking many rules, but they're strong and they go their own way, which is a major change to most video game women. Plus, once you get to the fourth game in the series, the female character is an accomplished journalist who is played as being a smart human being that the men underestimate. They act like children and they're admonished for it by both the narrative and the audience.

Question 31

Who Is This?

Okay, so it's not as if this woman only appeared in video games, but after the Arkham trilogy, Batman has been making waves in the gaming community. Sure, they got worse as they went along, turning more and more bloated, pulling the players too far away from the combat. However, people loved them, so it almost feels as if the games breathed a new lease of life into the Batman franchise. A lot of people who have never read the comics have played the games.

Question 32

Who Is This?

Rather than being all video game, this one actually spends a lot of time showing you an anime centered around a man's inability to choose between two women. Guess what both of those women are called? In a world where pretty much all games choose to use the same mechanics, it's nice to see games like this try to tell a story and mess with the mechanics while they're doing it. That being said, sometimes people want to play a game, not watch an anime.

Question 33

Who Are They Meant To Be?

This character made me happy because she was voiced by one of my all time favorite female voice actors, Ashly Burch. Not only does that mean I get to hear her work, it means she's continuing to work, so everybody wins. As for this woman as a character, she's nothing special. Both she and her brother are supposed to come off fairly loathsome, so I suppose they got that right.

Question 34

Who Is This?

It feels like this woman is an interesting development in the world of the female in video gaming. It's hardly the biggest step forward, but I also think she creates an interesting discussion. Sure, she is violently sexualized, but I would hardly describe her as sexual. Sex, for her, is a way to destroy her enemies, not a way to get people interested in her. Do we still consider that a negative step forward for equality, or is that not actually rather forward thinking?

Question 35

Who Are They Meant To Be?

Apart from the odd bit of singing, I'm fairly sure that this girl here is unable to speak throughout the entire game. I've never finished Transistor, so I cannot be sure, but I think that's true. Also, her sword, which does talk, speaks with the voice of a man. I feel like there's a lot we can read into there. In fact, I reckon you could write a whole essay on how this speaks to the way women are treated in most video games.
