Since the very beginning of cinema, films have been transporting audiences to worlds that they would never otherwise see. As film technology has progressed, movies have become able to show us worlds more incredible than our own. Many of the very best films are so effective because the worlds that exist within their frames are believable. The audience is so drawn in that we forget we're watching a movie for a time. Over the years, we rewatch iconic films to bring us back to that world we loved so much. Well, we wanted to find out how well you know these movie worlds.

A film's setting is one of the most important aspects in a movie. A powerful setting is like a character all on its own. It speaks and acts in ways that impact not just the characters in the film, but the audience as well. We went through and chose some of the most iconic film settings to see if you can recognize them. What film is this setting from?

During the the 60s and 70s, many movies were brought to Spain's Tabernas Desert as Hollywood had gradually built a ghost town for all the Westerns that were being made. This specific film location has been used in several films, but this wide shot, this exact scene is from one very famous film. Of particular interest for this film location was the railway. The exterior of the castle, which you see in the image, was designed to resemble the painting "Resistance - The Black Idol," by Czech artist Frantisck Kupka. The real hospital director from this location, Dean Brooks, actually had a role in the film. When scouting for locations to shoot this film, the crew found Tarrytown, a quaint village in Upstate New York. This seemed perfect, but it didn't quite work out for the period needed. The scouting then moved to England in search of a perfect location. In the end, nothing already built was found, so the crew were forced to build a town from scratch. Almost every shot needed for this film was completed in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, but the area was experiencing unusually low snow levels during filming, so North Dakota and North Minnesota were used to achieve some of the snowy shots. Many of the businesses used in this film were actual businesses, though some have been closed down since the making of this film. While some statues like the one pictured here do exist, this one was built in North Dakota near the Canadian border. This one was taken down after filming completed.
