Who knew that a film that started out with: "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away", would become the world that it is today. The franchise began in 1977 with the release of Star Wars, which later would be subtitled Episode IV: A New Hope in 1981. It became a worldwide phenomenon. Many adults remember playing with the Millenium Falcon by Kenner when they were younger, and cringe that they don't still have their Star Wars toy collection.
A New Hope was followed by The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). George Lucas, who created the world of Star Wars, took audiences to places they had never been before. Forty years later the original trilogy is still capturing the hearts and minds of children as well as adults. From 1999 to 2005, the prequel trilogy was released. These films had mixed reviews but brought back the energy and excitement of the franchise.
In 2015, the sequel trilogy began with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This film brought back the beloved cast of the first trilogy, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca. James Earl Jones even reprised his vocal talents as Darth Vader. Force Awakens was very much a throwback to the first trilogy films. It made us laugh, cry and truly enjoy the enigmatic storytelling and cinematography.
If you're a Star Wars fan then this quiz is for you. See if you can use your Jedi skills to score a 100%. The goal is to match the film quote to the correct Star Wars franchise film. Be mindful not to assume the picture is from the correct film either. May the Force be with you.
"Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, farm boy."- Han Solo
Admit it, we've all wanted to travel at hyper speed with Han Solo. In this industry changing film, Han says this quote to Luke Skywalker when they are under pressure to get out of where they are fast. Han made illegal modifications to make the Millennium Falcon do 0.5 past light speed. That is actually 1,041.66 light-years per hour and a top speed of 2.74 x 1015 meters per second. Betting against the Millennium Falcon in a race would not be a wise idea.
"Mmm. Lost a planet, Master Obi-Wan has. How embarrassing."- Yoda
This jest by Yoda shows that he also has a sarcastic side. While Yoda is training Younglings, Obi-Wan comes to ask for help locating a planet. Yoda asks the Younglings what they think happened to the planet. To which the Padowon says that the planet must have been erased from the database. Yoda and Obi-Wan continue to converse on who could have possibly removed items from the database. In this film we get to see a younger Yoda as well as Obi-Wan.
"Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?"- Princess Leia
Han and Luke find their way into the cell block where the Princess is being held against her will. Darth Vader is holding her to try and get information out of her. She makes the comment above when she is being rescued. From the get-go we realize that this is no ordinary princess. Leia is feisty and not afraid to fight the bad guys. Audiences instantly fell in love with not only the character of Princess Leia but with the actress Carrie Fisher.
"He's holding a thermal detonator!"- C-3PO
In this film we see Leia in disguise to rescue Han Solo from his prison of being frozen in carbonite. At the time of his freezing Leia told Han that she loved him. Han's response, "I know". This was a complete ad lib from Harrison Ford, who thought that Han would respond in that way. This classic term of endearment is still uttered today by fellow geeks and Star Wars fans. In what movie though, does Han get rescued from the carbonite?
"I sense great fear in you, Skywalker. You have hate....you have anger....but you don't use them."- Count Dooku
In this film, Anakin and Obi-Wan are dispatched to rescue Chancellor Palpatine, who has been kidnapped by Count Dooku and General Grievous. This battle is a rematch for the three characters who fought in a preceding film. Dooku uses the force to collapse a walkway on Obi-Wan so that the fight is between him and Anakin. After cutting off Count Dooku's hand the Chancellor tells Anakin to kill Dooku. Anakin struggles with the decision then is influenced by the prodding of Palpatine and cuts Dooku's head off.
"Why you stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf-herder!"- Princess Leia
This quote is said by the feisty Princess Leia during and exchange with Han Solo. Han is supposed to be leaving but cannot yet, saying that Leia wants him around longer. Meanwhile Chewbacca and Luke are the peanut gallery watching the fireworks between Han and Leia. This is also the scene where Han Solo says one of his iconic quotes to Chewbacca. The whole argument is brought to an end when Leia kisses Luke, saying that Han doesn't know everything about women yet.
"Anakin, you're breaking my heart! And you're going down a path I cannot follow!"- Padme
Padme Amidala, the mother of Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker, in a heart-wrenching plea to Anakin says the above quote. Anakin believing that she had turned against him, attacks her, injuring her on the volcanic moon of Mustafar. Obi-Wan Kenobi rushes her away after defeating Anakin. Padme gives birth to the twins then died directly after. Dark Sidious tells Darth Vader (Anakin) that in his anger it was he who killed Amidala and their unborn child. This further fueled Vader's anger.
"These aren't the droids you're looking for....."- Obi Wan Kenobi
In the scene, Obi-Wan performs a jedi mind trick on some stormtroopers when he and Luke are stopped going into a space port. Luke is confused on how they got past the stormtroopers. Obi-Wan then tells him that the force can have a strong influence on the weak-minded. This jedi mind trick is one thing that has lead many fans to believe that the character of Rey in The Force Awakens, is a Kenobi. I guess we will have to wait and see for The Last Jedi.
"Lando's not a system he's a man!"- Han Solo
In this film we are introduced to the character of Lando Calrissian, an old friend of Han's. Leia expresses her lack of trust in Lando to Han, who tells her that he doesn't trust Lando either. C-3PO is taken apart and Chewbacca tries to put him back together. This is when C-3PO's head gets put on backwards. Han, Leia and Chewie are invited to dinner by Lando. This is when they realize it is a trap to turn them into Darth Vader. Lando tells Han that he had no choice.
"It's a trap!"- Admiral Ackbar
In this film the rebels try to take down the death star. The shield must be taken down from the moon below. Han and Leia take a team to knock out the shield while Lando and other fighters await to take out the death star. Star destroyers show up and Admiral Ackbar says the above quote about it being a trap. The actor that lent his voice for Admiral Ackbar, Erik Bauersfeld. Sadly he past away in 2016. He reprised his vocal talents as Admiral Ackbar in The Force Awakens in 2015.
"When 900 years old, you reach.......Look as good, you will not."- Yoda
Luke returns to see Yoda in this film. Yoda is much older and says that he must sleep forever. Luke tells him that he has come back to complete his training. Yoda tells Luke that he does not need anymore training. Yoda tells Luke that he has only one thing left to do to become a Jedi, defeat Vader. Luke asks Yoda if Darth Vader is truly his father to which Yoda confirms it. Yoda tells Luke to not underestimate the powers of the Emperor
"The Dark Side of the Force is the pathway to many abilities some consider to be...unnatural."- Senator Palpatine
Chancellor Palpatine tells Anakin the story of Darth Plagueis. Palpatine goes on to talk about how the apprentice of Darth Plagueis killed him in his sleep. The apprentice being the Chancellor. Anakin asks Palpatine if it is possible to learn the power to save lives like Darth Plagueis. Anakin has been tormented by nightmares of Padme's death and would do anything to keep this from happening. Palpatine tells Anakin that he can learn this power but not from a Jedi.
"I suggest a new strategy, R2: let the Wookiee win."- C-3PO
This quote is during the Star Wars chess scene between R2D2 and Chewbacca. Han tells C-3PO that Wookies are known to pull arms out when they don't win. Any child of the 80's that had the toy Millenium Falcon, loved placing their action figures on the pegs in this area of the ship. In this scene we see the competitive side of not only Chewbacca but of R2D2 as well. If only R2D2 had subtitles. Though that would probably have changed the rating of the film. LOL!
"Obi-Wan has taught you well."- Darth Vader
In one of the most iconic light saber, Star Wars duels, Luke Skywalker shows Darth Vader how much he has learned since they last met. The Emperor tells Luke Skywalker to defeat his father. Throughout the battle the Emperor is playing at Luke's anger and feelings, trying to get him to turn to the dark side. This is a heavy scene between father and son, light side and dark side. It shows how easily one can be tempted to the dark side.
"Great shot kid, that was one in a million."- Han Solo
Many pilots tried and failed to make this perfect shot that Luke did. Battle stations are taken as the rebels fight against the empire at Yavin. Darth Vader even gets in on the action, taking things into his own hands. One of Luke's support fighters is shot down by Darth Vader. Luke turns off his targeting computer, to the dismay of the Rebel Alliance. He focuses on the Force and hears Obi-Wan's voice. Luke uses the force to fire a shot that destroys the Death Star.
"There is good in him. I've felt it."- Luke Skywalker
When on the planet of Endor, Luke is speaking with Leia and tells her that he must go. Luke says that he knows there is good in Vader and that he must help him. Leia understands that Luke must go and tells him that he is their only hope. It is during this scene that Leia finds out that she is his sister. To which she says that somehow she has always known that. An awkward moment between Han and Leia until she tells him that Luke is her brother.
"Luke, I don't want to loose you to the Emperor the way I lost Vader."- Obi-Wan Kenobi
At this point in the movie, Luke receives a vision of the future from the Force of Han and Leia in pain in a city of clouds. Luke decides to leave training early to go help his friends. Though Yoda pleads with him to finish his training. Even if that means Han and Leia die. Then steps in Obi-Wan with the quote above. Luke of course still leaves to go and rescue his friends in the city in the clouds.
"Luke, you can destroy the Emperor. He has foreseen this. It is your destiny. Join me, and together we can rule the galaxy as father and son."- Darth Vader
Darth Vader is proud of the fighter that Luke has become, urges him to join him so that they can rule the galaxy together. Darth sees the power that is in Luke and knows that he would better help Vader control everything and everyone. However, Luke has no desire to join the dark side. He wants to help his father come back to the man he used to be and help him defeat the Empire. Luke, like his mother Padme, still sees Darth Vader as being capable of being good.
"You don't know how hard I found it, signing the order to terminate your life."- Governor "Grand Moff" Tarkin
Tarkin became the first Grand Moff and regional Governor of the Outer Rim when Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine transformed the Republic into the Galactic Empire. This also gave him the responsibility of the Death Star. In this film he brings Princess Leia to the bridge and threatens to destroy Alderaan unless she complies. She does so telling him that the rebels are on Dantooine. Tarkin still gives the order to destroy Alderaan to show the powers of the Death Star.
"Great, kid. Don't get cocky."- Han Solo
This quote is during a space fight where Han, Luke, Leia and the rest of the gang are shooting it out with some enemy fighters. Luke takes position as tail gunner and after experiencing his first enemy kill he gets super excited. This isn't Han's first rodeo and he knows it's too early to celebrate. Han compliments Luke with this quote, while also coaching him to focus on the task at hand. Han does not want Luke prematurely celebrating and taking his eyes off the other fighters.
"Don't call me a mindless philosopher, you overweight glob of grease."- C-3PO
C-3PO is a droid that is programmed for etiquette and protocol. That being said, C-3PO has some of the best snappy comebacks and one liners in the film franchise. Throughout the films there are many moments like this between R2D2 and C-3PO. Though we cannot understand what R2 says, we imagine that he's giving it right back to C-3PO. Their characters help serve as our guides in the films. They add humor, wit and light heartedness to plot heavy scenes.
"The Force is strong with you. A powerful Sith you will become. Henceforth, you shall be known as Darth.....Vader."- Darth Sidious
If there's one character that we want to punch in the throat during several of the films, it's Darth Sidious. Also known as, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine and the Emperor. He used Anakin's emotions and fears to bring him to the dark side and become Darth Vader. Like his father, Luke is tested by Darth Sidious and forced to fight his father, Darth Vader. This character is pure evil and selfish. We learn in the story he tells Anakin that he killed his master Darth Plagueis.
"You can't win, Darth. Strike me down, and I will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."- Obi-Wan Kenobi
In this film, Obi-Wan has a light saber fight with Darth Vader while Luke and Han go to rescue Leia. Obi-Wan understands that Luke is critical to helping Anakin fulfill his destiny. He knows that he cannot kill Vader, for if he does he cannot bring balance to the force. Obi-Wan knows that as a spirit, being a part of the force, that he will be able to help Luke become a Jedi and turn Darth Vader back to the light.
"Laugh it up, Fuzzball."- Han Solo
This film and scene appeared earlier in this quiz. Han and Leia are exchanging sarcastic blows to each other. Chewbacca bursts out into laughter following a zinger by Leia. Hearing Chewbacca, Han turns and tells him to "laugh it up, Fuzzball", shooshing Chewbacca. Which, thank you Harrison Ford and George Lucas for providing my parents with the perfect nickname for their little one with constant bed head. Chewbacca and Han have a brotherly bond and often have silly arguments and banter between them. It was funny to see this come out in the above quote.
"The Force is strong with this one."- Darth Vader
This is one of Darth Vader's most famous quotes. In this movie, Vader and two TIE Fighters are chasing after Luke. They are in desperate need to stop Luke from being successful in his task. Others failed and now Luke is the only one left to make the perfect shot. Darth Vader senses the Force with Luke. At this point, Darth Vader has no idea that his child, who supposedly died at birth, is the one in front of him about to destroy the Death Star.
