Can You Name All These Fighting-Type Pokémon?

Fighting-type Pokémon had an unusual start in the competitive battling scene. Psychic-type Pokémon were the undisputed kings of the metagame in Pokémon Red Blue, due to the fact that they barely had any weaknesses. Fighting-type Pokémon were weak to Psychic-types, which meant that it was incredibly risky to use one in battle. The one good reason to use them was that some of the best Pokémon in the first generation were Normal-types, such as Chansey, Snorlax, and Tauros. A decent Fighting-type could take down one of those Normal-type specialists in a few hits, but it was open to being annihilated by a Kadabra in the next round.

There have been several attempts over the years to increase the usage of Fighting-type Pokémon. The first was the introduction of Dark and Steel-type in Pokémon Gold & Silver, which were strong against Psychics and weak against Fighters. Pokémon Black & White made Fighting-type Pokémon even more relevant to the game, with the addition of powerful new moves and Pokémon. As such, the Fighting-type Pokémon are now something to be truly feared in the competitive scene, which means that you should consider using one in your team, in order to wreck havoc on those pesky Normal and Dark-type Pokémon that still stalk the metagame.

If you clicked on this quiz, then you probably think that you know your Fighting-type Pokémon. These brawling beasts have been battling since the days of Pokémon Red Blue, which means that we have a lot of creatures to choose from. So, Can You Name All These Fighting-Type Pokémon?

Question 1

You need to trade if you want to acquire this mighty Pokémon

This Pokémon was once the undisputed king of the Fighting-types. Its strength allowed it to knock out a mighty Chansey or Snorlax in two hits, which made them indispensable on some teams. In order to acquire this Pokémon, you needed to trade its previous form to another person. It would then evolve in their game, which could then be traded back to you. This was where the social aspect of Pokémon came in, which is what a lot of people cherish about the game... either that or they just two bought two Game Boys.

Question 2

This Pokémon specialises in powerful kicks

The first generation of Pokémon games introduced two Fighting-type Pokémon that specialized in punches and kicks. This is the kicking Pokémon, who exists just to boot his enemies in the face. The odd thing about this Pokémon is that it has numerous signature moves. In Pokémon Gold & Silver, this was the only Pokémon that could learn Mega Kick, Jump Kick, Hi Jump Kick, and Rolling Kick. That's a lot of different ways of saying "this Pokémon kicks the enemy with its legs".

Question 3

Ash briefly owned this Pokémon during his journey through Kanto

This mighty monkey is one of the first Fighting-type Pokémon that is listed in the Pokédex. Ash Ketchum briefly used one in the Pokémon anime, before leaving it to train at a gym and never coming back to reclaim it. You can expect to fight a frighteningly powerful Primeape during the Elite Four battle in Sun & Moon. This is because it has the Anger Point ability, which means its Attack stat will max out if you hit it with a critical.

This Pokémon represented the series in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

This might be the most popular Pokémon to come out of Diamond & Pearl, which are often considered to be the worst generation of games. Question 5

The Grass-type starter of Kalos can evolve into this powerful beast

The Grass-type starter of Pokémon X & Y is a hedgehog with a bag on its head. This bag eventually transforms into a mighty suit of armor. The final evolution of that Pokémon transforms into a beast that looks like a Space Marine from Warhammer 40K, if it were designed by a Furry. You might want to skip choosing this Pokémon in favor of Froakie or Fennekin. The reason for this is because it is a Grass/Fighting-type Pokémon, which gives it a wide range of weaknesses.

Question 6

A song can help this Pokémon change forms in the middle of battle

A lot of Pokémon have different forms which can be shifted into outside of battle This Legendary Pokémon has the ability to switch forms in the middle of battle, by using an attack known as Relic Song. It starts out as a Normal/Psychic-type Pokémon and it can change into a Normal/Fighting-type Pokémon by singing the Relic Song in battle. The biggest threat to this creature are Ghost-type Pokémon. Question 8

This Pokémon was created due to a bad influence

Pokémon X & Y introduced several bizarre methods for evolving Pokémon. You could only get a Goodra by leveling up during a rainstorm and you could only get a Malamar by leveling up while holding the Nintendo 3DS upside down, which it could detect through its gyroscope. You can only evolve the earlier form of this Pokémon when you have a Dark-type creature on your team. This suggests that the Dark-type Pokémon is a bad influence, which is what causes it to evolve into such a brute.

Hitmonlee is the kicking specialist of Pokémon Red & Blue, which makes this guy the puncher. You can choose between the two if you conquer the unofficial Fighting-type Gym. This Pokémon loves to boost its own stats

It seems like Fighting-type and Psychic-type Pokémon are the polar opposites of each other, in the same way that Fire and Water are. There have been a few Pokémon that mix the two types together. Question 13

This Pokémon can jump onto its head and perform devastating spin attacks

It uses the point on its head to spin in battle and fires off an array of punches and kicks.

Question 14

Ash caught one of these Pokémon during his adventures in Johto

Bug-type Pokémon were pretty terrible in the first generation of games. This was a shame, as they were the only Pokémon that had a type advantage against Psychics in Red & Blue. The later games amended this, by adding some awesome Bug-type Pokémon to the series. The first of these was this big beetle, which Ash Ketchum used in his journey throughout Johto. This Pokémon can Mega Evolve, which gives it access to the awesome Skill Link ability, which causes all multi-hit moves to always hit the maximum number of times.

Question 15

Mega Evolution made this powerful bird even stronger

They say that you should never pick favorites between your children. The creators of Pokémon clearly don't agree with this, as they have no problem putting the spotlight on their most beloved creatures. This was certainly the case with Torchic, which is why its final evolution is so powerful. Anyone who bought Pokémon X & Y within its release window would receive a free downloadable Torchic with the Mega Stone for its final evolution already equipped. There was literally no reason to choose Fennekin as your starter, as that Torchic outclassed it in every way.

This cat won't last long in the ring against another heavy hitting enemy Pokémon.

This cold crab is always down for a brawl

Pokémon Sun & Moon introduced a crab creature to the series, that broke the mold by being a Fighting-type Pokémon instead of a Water-type. If you take that Pokémon to Mount Lanakila and level it up, then it will transform into this cool customer. It becomes a Fighting/Ice-type Pokémon, that learns a range of powerful punches and cold-based attacks.
