The Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel written by English author, J.R.R. Tolkien. It took him several years to complete and he even went so far as to develop the Elvish language for his work. It went on to become one of the best-selling novels of all time and to date has sold more than 150 million copies and been translated into more than 38 different languages. Almost 55 years after the book was first published, director Peter Jackson managed to bring the story of Middle-earth to the big screen, in one of the most ambitious film projects ever undertaken and in so doing so brought Tolkien's story to a whole new generation of audience. He broke the story up into three parts - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003).

Who is this lady of the woods?

This Elvish character is not really a hero as such, more of a supply and logistics coordinator offering our band of heroes shelter and food. She is however aware of the power of the ring and in a test rejects the offer of the ring as it will make her great and terrible. Instead, she offers advice, guidance and ultimately support in the form of gifts and supplies to aid them on their journey. Can you say "Friend Zone"? Who is this paragon?

Who is the man in gray?

No band of adventurers is complete without a few key members. In this case, our band has not only three small child-like companions but a short lumberjack, an effeminate archer, a worldly wise warrior, and a wise old man dressed in gray. And as is the case with many of these adventures the poor old man is disregarded as a fool and a cheap conjuror or trickster. However, this old man has a trick or two up his sleeve. Who is this ancient traveler?

Who is the bearded mini lumberjack?

As per the previous question we have a band of travelers and adventurers. One of their ilk is a small, stout fellow with a beard you could lose a rabbit in. He is reminiscent of a highly strung miniature lumberjack fighting his way through a rhododendron bush when he is angry. He also has a love for fishermen's tales and can boast as good, if not better, than anyone around the campfire. His predecessors were somehow involved in stealing a bunch of gold from an angry, large flying lizard. Who is this?

Who is this red headed She-Elf?

This lithe but deadly She-Elf forms an integral part of our heroes procession, albeit from a distance. She is a skilled bow-person and holds her own in hand to hand combat, but she also has a softer side that she does not easily show. She is caught between feelings of love for another Elf, feelings that she is told not to manifest, and true love for a dwarf! Again, this makes her an outcast. But who is this woman of the bow?

Who is this emaciated cave dweller?

Ok, time is, um, precious now. So in the immortal words of our character, let's "keepses" on. This little cave dweller is a tortured soul that wants nothing more than his ring, a few juicy fish and perhaps an orc or two to chew on. But alas, he cannot have any of it. Instead, he ends up leading our hero the long way round to a dangerous place while battling his own inner demons that keep him a bit unbalanced at the best of times. Who are we referring to?

In the movie this character is known by a few names, Strider and The Ranger being two of them. He is a dangerous fellow who speaks fluent Elvish and is in love with a high-born Elf. But this is not exactly who he is at all, Our sword wielding hero is also of royal lineage. He can track Orcs, ride like a true Rohirrim and fight like an Elf and has the manners of a true prince charming. But who is he and where is he from?

This Elvish beauty is not only high-born but she is also a fierce warrior. She's not afraid to take on any fight, she even goes up against some nasty Nazgûl, or, Ringwraiths while pulling a spell out of mid-air to help save our wounded young hero after he got himself stabbed by a dirty old blade. This is sounding like a bad night in downtown, I know. She is also the love interest of the sword wielding ranger. Who is she?

Who is this one-armed beast?

Now, this character might as well be straight out of God of War. He is mean, hard and takes no prisoners (no, really, no prisoners). He is as likely to kill you or feed you alive to his warg as he is to eat you himself. He has a hate for mini lumberjack types and absolutely hates the idea that the one that is responsible for him being, shall we say, short handed still roams around the country side. Who is this destructive character?

We all know a little twerp like this, the mouth that eggs on the bully to take on the nice guy. This little quasi-dictator holds no real power and just happens to be good at manipulation. He is first to run away from danger or conflict and the last guy to put his own skin on the line, but in this case, he really digs deep to make things as bad as he can for some poor soul. Who is this master of the unibrow?

Who is the bowman that kills Smaug?

Known also as the Bowman and the barge-man; this unlikely hero leads a quiet life, trading wine to the Elves and catching fish with his barge, but he is not what he seems, he is the descended from Lord Girion of Dale, whose wife and child had escaped to Laketown when Smaug ruined Dale and took the Lonely Mountain. He also later leads a much-devastated army to the gates of Lonely Mountain in order to claim his prize from the dwarven king. Who was this?

Who is the Skin-Changer that helps the dwarves?

He's a Northman, a Skin-changer, and a chieftain. His kin once inhabited the North of the Anduin valley between the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood during the last centuries of the Third Age. They guarded the Ford of Carrock from the Goblins and Wargs. But he is the last of his kind. His favorite shape is that of a black bear and he has little to no love for Goblins. He is a soft-spoken and gentle giant who offers assistance and shelter to our rag-tag heroes. Who is he?

In the prequel trilogy to the sequel trilogy this is the main hero, he has been driven from his fabulous home under the mountain and forced to do manual labor wherever he can find it in order to give his small troop of traveling dwarves income and shelter. He has been biding his time and making preparations to go back to his home and re-take it from the ugly flying lizard who has invaded it. Who is this marvel of the anvil and hero of the log?

Who is this shy fellow who plays the role of the traveling adviser?

In the sequel trilogy, this handsome young Hobbit plays the role of the resident cook, adviser, care giver and general bodyguard to the main hero. But he is actually a pretty shy guy with a soft heart that loves nothing more than "taters" and will have them any way he can, with fish or in a stew. All he wants is to get this whole cross country hiking trip over with so he can go home and have some peace and quiet. Who is he?

Now, this is a foe from hell. He is known as a fire breathing Drake from the North. He is the steward of a great city-kingdom that he is supposed to hold in trust until the rightful heir returns to claim the throne. Fortunately, his son is rescued but not before he completes a spectacular swan dive off the tower. Who is this man?
