Can You Match The Johnny Depp Character To The Movie?

We’re deep into the summer season which means, among other classic things like grilling, going to the pool and taking a vacation, that there is yet another Pirates of the Caribbean movie out. That’s right folks, our old friend Johnny Depp has buckled on his sword belt, grabbed his tri-cornered hat, waxed his mustachios, and jumped into his most famous role one more time. Captain Jack Sparrow, whom Depp plays with so much vim and vigor, has been a summer mainstay since 2003, when the first movie in the franchise, The Curse of the Black Pearl debuted to great public adulation and critical acclaim. While that critical acclaim may have withered on the vine over the intervening years, audiences still love the series, as evinced by the $700 million and rising box office receipts for the current flick, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

But what about all of those other Johnny Depp movies out there that people forget about? After all, the man has been playing stranger and more eccentric characters than Captain Jack for years. In fact, for the longest time it looked like he would always be one of those actors who was well-regarded for his choice of challenging roles rather than for his mainstream success. Depp’s filmography is full of the weird, the wild and the little-known. In fact, I wonder how well you know Johnny Depp’s various roles. Let’s take a look and see if you can name 25 Johnny Depp movies.

Question 1

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

I really sincerely hope you got this one right! If you didn’t I hate to tell you this but you probably shouldn’t be taking a quiz about which Johnny Depp movie is which… This massive blockbuster (and its sequel) was a worldwide hit not in the least because of Depp’s wild portrayal of the Mad Hatter from the famous story. This might be one of the weirdest blockbusters ever, at least as far as cast and crew are concerned. It was directed by notorious whack-job Tim Burton, Depp’s partner in crime for many, many movies. It also stars Helena Bonham Carter, Burton’s ex and a noted weirdo herself, as well as oddball Crispin Glover.

Question 2

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

Here’s another one I’m just going to assume you got right away. Don’t worry- the quiz is gonna get harder eventually but I decided to start you off with a few softballs. This flick was of course a remake of the classic Gene Wilder film. Gene was pretty strange in the role of Willie Wonka way back in the day but Johnny did him one further in that department. His Wonka is almost creepy and sometimes it seems like Depp drew his inspiration from Malcolm McDowell’s performance as Alex in A Clockwork Orange than any kid-friendly movies or characters.

Question 3

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

And moving on in our list of Depp “crime” movies we have this infamous flick, which everyone seems to know but hardly anyone will admit to liking or watching! The movies centers on Depp’s character George Jung, an American coke smuggler who gets in deep with the Medellin cartels. It’s actually based on a real-life memoir called ...How a Small Town Boy Made $100 Million with the Medellin Cocaine Cartel and Lost It All. It was directed by Ted Demme who, ironically, died during a celebrity charity basketball game possibly because of the coke found in his system during his autopsy.

Question 4

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

And here we have one more easy lob of a question for you- it’s the last one that’s this easy; don’t say I never gave you anything! In this movie Depp played Tonto, the Native American sidekick to an Old West vigilante and do-gooder. Depp’s performance, as befits the man, was far more complex than the Tonto character from the old TV show ever was. I suppose if you lived under a rock a few years ago then you might not actually know that was Depp underneath all of the crazy makeup- it doesn’t really look like him, unlike his role in Alice in Wonderland, where you just knew it was him behind the face paint.

Question 5

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

This one is a classic offbeat movie from Depp’s early career. The story focuses on Depp’s character, who lives in a small town and is taking care of his developmentally challenged brother while also having an affair with an older married woman (a common theme in Depp movies). The younger brother is played by none other than fellow screen superstar Leonardo DiCaprio in one of his early roles. While the star of the movie is Depp and he does a great job in the role, DiCaprio is equally awesome and received his first Oscar nomination for his performance.

Question 6

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

Well, that’s enough of Depp westerns. Let’s return to Gothic horror, shall we? Here we have Depp taking a turn as an infamous serial killer, a barber who murders his victims with his straight razors and then cooks their corpses as meat pies. Yup- highly unsettling and odd. It should come as no surprise then that Depp is joined by director Tim Burton and actress Helena Bonham Carter in the mayhem. I feel like I’ve written that before and will again; hmm… Even better, this one is also a musical. How do you like them apples?

Question 7

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

Depp goes full-on gangsta in this movie about notorious Boston Mafioso James “Whitey” Bulger. Bulger once sat atop the FBI’s most wanted list and was a fugitive for years. Although he quite literally “made his bones” in the ‘70s he is one of the most infamous of all career criminals from any time period. Depp’s portrayal of the crime-lord was a little bit more straight-on edgy and dark than most of his other “dark” roles, most of which are rather more odd than scary. He definitely brought the menace in this one though, as anyone who even saw only the first trailer can attest to.

Question 8

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

One of the greatest horror movies to come out of the ‘80s and one that spawned a seemingly never ending franchise, this series introduced the world to Freddy Krueger, the infamous baddie with the hands made of knives. The character would go on to star in a total of nine films, a TV series and even a reboot in 2010. It was instrumental in bringing the “slasher” movie genre to the forefront of horror movies. A young Depp stars in his feature film debut as one of the teenagers who is being stalked by Freddy Krueger in his dreams.

Question 9

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

Speaking of which… Here’s Depp in aGothic horror film which, as everyone knows, was loosely based on the very famous 19th century short story by Washington Irving. The story, which features the scarily infamous Headless Horseman as the bad guy, is full of strange and subtle creepiness, which means Depp and best friend Tim Burton just had to take a shot at it. The funny thing about this one, though, is that Depp actually plays the “normal” guy, New York City policeman Ichabod Crane, who is sent to find out the evil secret of the titular town.

Question 10

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

There’s just no way that an actor as willing to take on weird roles as Depp wasn’t going to find an opportunity to appear in the world of Harry Potter (well, J.K Rowling). He may have had to wait until the newest series of the Wizarding World started, missing out on the original Harry Potter movies but he certainly had fun playing Gellert Grindelwald, the evil Dark Wizard who was second only to He Who Shall Not Be Named when it came to bad guys in that world. Depp is slated to reprise his role next year.

Question 11

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

Following up on his obsession with cult “Gonzo” writer Hunter S. Thompson, Depp helped to produce and starred in this vehicle about Thompson’s quasi-autobiographical novel. The movie follows Paul Kemp (Depp) as he careens around Puerto Rico, working as a freelance writer. But instead of writing, Kemp spends most of his time partying with local industrialists and other shady journalists and chasing after the exotic French woman Chenault. It’s a movie that was perfect for Depp to show yet another wacky side of his character and play a legendary wild man in the process.

Question 12

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

We already saw Depp as a big-time gangster in Black Mass. But how about this lesser known film from the late 1990s about an FBI agent who became a mole in a New York City crime family. Depp plays a little bit more of the straight man in this drama as his character slowly but surely becomes more and more entangled in the mob and begins to wonder if he is still working for the FBI or has become just another “family guy.” Al Pacino, no stranger to mob movies, co-starred with Depp in this sometimes forgotten movie.

Question 13

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

Back to Depp’s forte we go. The man has certainly made more than his fair share of horror movies, hasn’t he? In this one he actually plays the sort of hero (well, protagonist at least), a New York City rare book dealer who is hired to find a copy of a book supposedly written by the devil himself. He travels the world in search of the true copy of the book, only to be attacked by the man who hired him once he finds that copy. The movie is sort of mess, even if it was directed by legendary filmmaker Roman Polanski but Depp has fun being all-serious like.

Question 14

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

Back in the mid-90s Johnny actually took on a few straight-edged roles here and there. In this film he plays an “average Joe” who gets tangled up in a political conspiracy. It’s pretty much a straight ahead noir crime/political thriller that has Depp’s character desperately trying to save both the governor and his own daughter from a whole host of evil political fixers. It did get fairly good reviews for its conceit of having the movie occur in real time but it’s definitely not as outlandish or outrageous as most of Depp’s movies are.

Question 15

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

Hunter S. Thompson was an author and journalist who was one of the legendary bad boys of the 1960s. He wrote the seminal book Hells Angels, an autobiographical tale about living and riding with the infamous biker gang. That is, until they stomped him, of course. He also wrote the classic The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved, which was a crazed hallucinogenic illustration of the ‘60s dream. So of course Johnny Depp was a big fan of Hunter’s. This movie was a labor of love by Depp and equally outrageous director Terry Gilliam. I just wonder if Depp did any of the insane amounts of drugs the film portrays its main character doing.

Question 16

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

Here’s a rather unusual movie that hardly anyone ever seems to remember. Depp plays a young man who believes himself to be the reincarnation of the world’s most famous lover from historical fiction. Hollywood legend Marlon Brando, in one of his later roles, plays the psychiatrist trying to help Depp’s character through his fixation, even as Depp dons (you see what I did there, right?) a cape and mask and waltzes through the world full of unrequited love. The movie also stars another legend- Faye Dunaway- marking the second time she worked with Depp. We’ll have more on that little teaser in a bit.

Question 17

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

This is one of the all-time greatest American movies ever made and it’s not because of the star our little quiz here, Mr. Depp. Rather, it's best known as a stark look at the Vietnam War that catapulted writer and director Oliver Stone to super-stardom and cemented the reputations of such actors as Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, and Willem Dafoe. The movie centers on a group of young infantrymen during the war and their trials and tribulations as well as those of their two lieutenants, Berenger and Dafoe, who are much hated and much loved by the men.

Question 18

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

One of the movies that launched Depp’s career as a Hollywood heartthrob, this was the successful follow up by John Waters to his seminal coming of age movie Hairspray. Depp plays basically a juvenile delinquent who hangs with a gang of other marginalized teens who call themselves “Drapes” and are in a constant state of conflict with all the “Squares.” In case the slang words didn’t already give it away the movie is set in the 1950s. Johnny’s character falls in love with one of the squares, leading to all kinds of Romeo and Juliet kinds of turmoil.

Question 19

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

Not many people are going to remember this early Depp adventure in filmmaking. Made in 1993 the indie feature is about a young teen in New York City (Depp) who has a weird dream about Eskimos and fish- a huge halibut to be precise. He then goes west to sell Cadillacs for his uncle and have an affair with an older woman who is building her own airplane. If all of this seems like it doesn’t make much sense to you, don’t worry- it doesn’t. It’s a strange, surreal film made by a Serbian director, Emir Kusturica, who only the most indie-obsessed fans have ever heard of.

Question 20

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

Then we have this campy, vampy remake of the classic TV horror series, which shows Johnny returning to form as the creepy patriarch of a very strange family, Barnabas Collins. Depp does his usual bang-up job of being, shall we say, rather unusual, and the film is pretty funny and humorously dark. It also features a bunch of usual suspects from Depp’s career- director Tim Burton and co-star Helena Bonham Carter, among others. I sometimes wonder how Depp even manages to make any films that those two are not involved in- there are even more movies not on this list that the trio have made together over the years.

Question 21

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

Johnny Depp doesn’t just do weird, although it often seems like he does. He can also do deep, dark, mysterious and sexy. That’s proven in this, one of his more famous romantic comedies , which tells the story of a hot young mom who comes to a small, isolated French village and opens up a chocolate shop. Depp plays the wandering gypsy gentleman who has an affair with her. A lot of the ladies totally dug this steamy movie and most guys don’t have any problems watching Juliette Binoche either. The critics like it as well, as it garnered five Oscar nominations.

Question 22

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

In a long career of playing strange and wonderful characters and working with strange and wonderful directors this film is one of the strangest for Depp. This one is a “psychedelic western” (or at least that’s what cult icon and director Jim Jarmusch called it) which focuses on Depp’s character, an accountant from the east who goes west and gets into a whole lotta trouble real quick-like. See, I can write cowboy when I want to! Anyway, Neil Young wrote the soundtrack while watching bits of the movie, it’s filmed all in black and white and it’s pretty weird. The perfect Johnny Depp vehicle!

Question 23

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

Johnny Depp has to be pretty much an oddball himself since he plays so many wacky characters and has throughout his career. Am I right or am I right? In this one he plays an infamous director, who spent the 1950’s making (and often failing to make due to financing problems) offbeat movies that were usually considered weird failures. The “movie within a movie” in this one is the director's Glen or Glenda, a movie about a transvestite. The director himself was also a transvestite and buddies with Bela Lugosi, of all people. Yeah, like I said it’s strange and complicated. That made it perfect for Depp and his buddy Tim Burton to star in and direct it.

Question 24

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

Hey, how about an offbeat romance from Johnny Depp? Have you ever heard of such a thing? No? Well, you might actually be kind of lucky then as there are plenty of them out there and as good as Depp is plenty of these movies are not so good. This one isn’t bad at all; as Depp plays the totally eccentric title character who is the caretaker for his equally weird sister Juniper played by fellow ‘80s superstar Mary Stuart Masterson. For once Depp is not the one in the romantic relationship but has to deal with his mentally ill sister’s romance with a new guy in town. The movie made the song “And I would walk 500 miles” a huge hit.

Question 25

Which Johnny Depp Movie Is This?

Who doesn’t want to watch a movie starring Depp as a young, lusty teen going after hot ladies at a posh Miami resort? Well, me for one but unfortunately I have seen this one on late night TV. Depp and Rob Morrow, who later made his Hollywood Bones starring in the critically acclaimed series Northern Exposure, run around hotels and beaches trying to land babes. It’s about as dumb as they come. In fact, given that this was the third in a series of basically soft-core sex romps that all had the same basic title; it might actually be even dumber than that.
