As a society, we have become obsessed with the cult of celebrity. There is no way of living in this world without being subjected to it. While people used to become famous to achieve something or, at the very least, be charismatic enough to make people sit up and notice them, it's now enough to make money and appear in public flashing that cash. One of the things that contributed to the rise of this phenomenon was the concept of paparazzi and shameless self-promotion.
If you ask us, the most shameless form of self-promotion is the sex tape. The more famous examples are out there, and we imagine that a couple of names are already springing to mind. The more we became obsessed with fame, the more these sex tapes started to crop up.
This isn't to say that some poor women aren't hacked, which is now a common occurrence. These hacks can leave famous women devastated, as pictures and videos that they took in private are shared all over the internet. Jennifer Love Hewitt
Has anybody seen or heard from Jennifer Love Hewitt over the past few years? It seems to us like she burst onto the scene with a huge amount of enthusiasm during her childhood years before continuing her success as she grew older. She used her newfound status as a sex icon to her advantage while continuing to appear in films and television, which all seemed to dry up nearly a decade ago! Now she's relegated to jobs in low-end productions. What happened?
Jessica Biel
Apart from marrying Justin Timberlake, we don't think this woman has really been in the spotlight that much over the past few years. Well, she did make a small cameo in Bojack Horseman and appeared in the Total Recall reboot that was almost entirely panned, but beyond that, we feel like Biel really needs to step it up. Hopefully, she'll have one of those Hollywood revivals where she acts in a film that nobody saw coming before absolutely blowing all of our minds.
Farah Abraham
One of the major victims of the cult of celebrity. After her stint on "16 And Pregnant," she moved on to "Teen Mom." These shows clearly gave her a taste of fame that she wasn't going to give up easily, as she has since used every opportunity to throw herself into the limelight, hoping that everyone will take notice. Even if you pride yourself on staying away from the fame-obsessed, it's hard to believe that you haven't heard of this woman at some point.
Kim Kardashian
If you've ever looked into the Kardashian family, you're sure to know that they're some of the worst people to have ever existed. Every single one of them is fame hungry to the point of obsession, and the rest of us are forced to know that they exist on a daily basis. If you're a fan, go and really look behind the scenes, at how they were all just relatively normal people until the OJ Simpson case evidently gave them a taste of something that they refused to let go of.
Mila Kunis
Despite her many projects and work throughout numerous years, the project that will likely follow her around the most is Family Guy. Not saying whether this is a bad or a good thing, it must be very annoying for a woman that is pretty much acting in something new every single year to be saddled with that sort of thing. Funny to think that she wasn't even the original voice of Meg, coming in after the pilot to take over.
Brooke Hogan
Here we have the first woman on our list who is pretty much famous entirely because of a family member. So, her father is the former wrestler Hulk Hogan, who recently had his own scandal regarding a sex tape that you should all look up, but beyond that, I'm not sure she has achieved anything of merit on her own. That being said, is being a former professional wrestler something to shout about either? Seriously, that's like the lowest of the low.
Tulisa Contostavlos
If you don't know who Tulisa Contostavlos is, she actually goes by just Tulisa now, presumably to distance herself from her youth. She was a pretty big name in other areas of the world, making her start in the world of showbiz as a member of the thankfully defunct N-Dubz. Don't bother wasting your time listening to their music because we can tell you now that it's awful and you won't enjoy it. Now, she's trying to move onto bigger and better things.
Sofia Vergara
Believe it or not, but the beautiful Sofia Vergara was actually involved with other projects before she found herself catapulted to stardom by the smash hit Modern Family, although I would imagine that even she will admit that this is pretty much the only reason anybody has heard of her. She claims that her character on the show isn't too far from real life, her own personal story coming with a child born out of marriage and a difficult transition to the states.
Kendra Baskett
You know that you have failed to achieve much when you're regularly described as a television personality. What that means is you have so little about you that the only thing people can recognize as your reason for being famous is the fact that you, like all human beings, have a personality. Kendra Baskett is one of these people, whose defining claim to fame appears to be as a partner to Hugh Hefner, an accolade that I'd imagine many women hold!
Kate Upton
You probably know this woman for her modeling career, but she has now started to appear in films as well, so it looks like we have a career of excruciating films ahead of us. Hopefully, she'll decide to just stick with the modeling so we don't have to go through that, but then that might be asking for too much. We think people should be allowed to dream of more and everything, but sometimes, you just have to accept what you are.
Chrissy Teigen
To those who don't know, Teigen is a famous model who has appeared in numerous publications and currently hosts Lip Sync Battle. She is also married to John Legend, which sees her appearing at numerous red carpet events and on the cover of gossip magazines. We may sound like we're being a little salty here, but we're really not, as Chrissy Teigen has one of the best Twitter accounts of all time. The way she handles trolls should be enough to keep this woman famous.
Tila Tequila
Does anybody actually know anything of worth that this woman has put out into the world? Not trying to say that we shouldn't give her the chance to, but we're pretty sure that none of you will be able to come up with anything either! There's only one thing sadder than someone who is obsessed with fame, and that is someone who is obsessed with fame and yet continues to have that fame allude them. Sure, we know who she is, but we wish we didn't.
Paris Hilton
When we talk about the cult of celebrity, this is one of the many faces that immediately pops into our heads. It's impossible to consider the type of person who would do anything to grab at fame while somehow achieving nothing of worth without talking about Paris Hilton. This woman is the original It Girl. She managed to carve out a successful career by living off daddy's money, going out to get drunk, and sleeping with as many men as she felt like.
Pamela Anderson
Quite possibly one of the most famous adult stars of all time, Pamela Anderson is a pop culture icon in her own right, having transcended the rather seedy beginnings that saw her burst into the cultural zeitgeist. Like many people who find themselves in the position that Anderson did, she essentially starts to look like a different person every half a decade. It's a shame that some people feel the need to get so much plastic surgery throughout their lives.
Monica Bellucci
Up until recently, Bellucci spent a lot of her time working on artsy films that would often come with their fair share of controversy, but she burst into people's lives when she decided to become the oldest Bond girl in Spectre. For some, this is likely one of the highest honors you can have bestowed upon you by a mainstream film, but it's hardly going to win you any awards with the arthouse crowd. Still, her beauty is rather undeniable!
Drew Barrymore
We're not sure when Drew Barrymore started to appear on our radar, but it's more than likely that her appearance in the Charlie Angels film had something to do with it. Sure, the film was a bit of a mess, but Drew Barrymore looked absolutely beautiful in it. It was a nice little bit of popcorn entertainment if nothing else. To this day, she continues to appear in a whole manner of things. Whether they're worth watching is another matter.
Mariah Carey
We know very little about Mariah Carey beyond the perception that seems to follow her wherever she goes, which is that she's a total diva that nobody wants to work with. Whether this is actually true or not really remains to be seen, but it does sort of show us how relentless it can be to gain a reputation once you're famous. Seriously, think about it. Can you ever envisage a time when Mariah Carey is not perceived to be a total diva?
Joan aka Chyna Laurer
Chyna, if you're not aware, is sadly no longer with us. While she was alive and in the business, she was a professional wrestler and a bodybuilder. Alongside this main source of work, she also spent some time as a glamour model on the side. This included a long run with Playboy, something that brought her a whole new raft of fans, as well as fulfilling the dreams of many wrestling fans. Take a look at her story if you want, but it can get pretty sad.

We've never really understood the hype surrounding Megan Fox if we're honest. Sure, she's a looker, but there's an entire list of women out there who are both beautiful and talented, so why not hire them instead? Plus, there's a lot of women who haven't made unpleasant comments about gender in modern society and the role of the female in modern film. Seriously, go take a look at some of the stuff she has said and tell us if you're still totally comfortable.

While she's a household name now, and someone who you wouldn't be surprised to see in a major blockbuster, many people forget that she started at a very young age. After moving from Israel while she was still a child, Portman started to work in showbiz while growing up on the eastern side of the United States. Now we all know her! Insane to think that none of us knows exactly where we'll be a decade or two from now, isn't it?

Unless you have an interest in rap or Hip Hop, it's unlikely that you've heard of Eve. Beyond her music career, she also appeared in the Barbershop films, and currently, acts in the show Daytime Divas. Despite her relative obscurity, Eve won a Grammy award in 2002 for her work on a song with Gwen Stefani and has taken a couple of trips into mainstream media on shows such as Glee. You've likely seen or heard Eve before, you just didn't know it.

In a lot of ways, Ariana Grande has turned the tide on how the media perceives her. For some reason, any woman who does what she wants, especially when they're young, is susceptible to an entire tirade from the media. This is especially true if they got their start on children's television. After the Manchester attack, it has become impossible for anybody to insult her after her gracious reaction in the face of a tragic situation. It took a terrorist attack to keep the media from vilifying a young woman...
Emma Stone
Superbad did more for Emma Stone's career than any film has ever done for any other actress. We swear that this woman came out of nowhere! All she had to do was appear, in an admittedly small role in Superbad, before finding herself among the likes of the highly respected Ryan Gosling and making Spiderman films. Whether or not any of these films are good is beside the point. She went from a relative unknown to a superstar in around half a decade.
Emily Ratajkowski
Whether you love or hate Emily Ratajowski, you have to admit that she's controversial in all the right ways. While everyone else is arguing about petty problems, Ratajowski is out there using her platform to highlight the problems that many women face. We may not agree with her methods and may find her personal choices problematic, but at least she's talking about stuff that matters! There's a lot of beautiful women who know they can just coast through life and never have to bother with anything serious.
Minka Kelly
If you're anything like us, you have literally never heard of Minka Kelly and have no idea what it is that has pushed her into the spotlight. Apparently, she's an actress who continues to appear regularly on television, her most famous roles being on the small screen rather than the big screen. However, showbiz is a crazy business that you can never really call, so who knows? We might be seeing this woman in some major blockbusters over the coming years.
Kristen Bell
The first time we became aware of Kristen Bell was when she stepped into one of the main roles in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. She may not have been the female lead, but she definitely stood out as one to watch! On a side note, if you haven't seen Forgetting Sarah Marshall because it looks like a pretty standard comedy, you should definitely go give it a look. It was surprisingly well written and got pretty odd in some of the scenes.
Katy Perry
Did anybody else find it pretty surprising that this woman ended up married to Russell Brand? Sure, he was a pretty big name in the UK and was well known for his ability with women, but this woman was, and still is, an absolutely huge star. We weren't like those cynical people saying they were sure to fail, but we definitely weren't surprised when it eventually did fail. How about you guys? Were you hoping that their love would last?
Mandy Moore
Until we saw the huge amount of attention that This Is Us was getting, we didn't even know that Mandy Moore existed! The reason for this might be that she started out in the music industry, where she made pretty bland pop music. Crazy how showbiz is such a wide playing field that people who started out in music can find themselves making waves in the acting industry. Just goes to show that, if you have the talent or the contacts, there's no telling what could happen.
Jessica Chastain
Despite being known for her fairly wide selection of projects that have featured on both the big and small screen, Chastain actually got her start at a young age when appearing on stage. One of the most inspiring things that you can say about Chastain is that she's known for spending a lot of time preparing for her roles, having only started appearing in films under ten years ago. Despite this relatively short film career, she has still received two Academy Award nominations due to the time she puts into her work.
Kristen Stewart
If you ask us, Kristen Stewart is made fun of way more than she deserves. Sure, she's not the greatest actress, but there are much worse out there that are far more deserving of your attention. She continues to get work and throws herself at it, which is the sign of a good actress if you ask us. We'd rather someone do that than just coast on their past successes, you know? We're looking at you Robert DeNiro, as much as that pains us to say.
Nicole Kidman
When we were younger, Nicole Kidman was a fairly well-respected actress with numerous appearances under her belt. Over the past decade or so, she has managed to tarnish that through a series of what we would consider poor choices. Now, rather than being known for her acting ability and charity work, she's soiled with a connection to the maniac that is Tom Cruise, along with a pretty loose handle on the human body that had led her to say some pretty insane things.
Taylor Swift
Something we never knew about till recently is the prevailing opinion that Taylor Swift is essentially a woman who throws it about as much as physically possible. If you don't know what we're talking about, then go take a look at how people discuss Taylor Swift and her relationships online. It's actually pretty weird. Here we were, thinking she was just a mediocre country musician-turned-boring pop star, and she's actually someone who should be ridiculed for her own personal choices.
Keeley Hazell
Never heard of this woman? Nah, we haven't really either, but after making her name as a glamour model, she has recently decided to take a stab at acting. We're not against people following their dreams, but we're rather cynical about why Hazell really wanted her acting career to pan out well. Rather than being a method actor dedicated to the craft, I wouldn't be surprised if Hazell sees acting as a chance to make a serious amount of money.
Christina Hendricks
Perhaps this is slightly sexist on our part, but we were surprised to see how much they dumbed down Christina Hendricks' looks for her appearance in Drive. Obviously, it fit the character perfectly, but it'd be a lie to say that actresses aren't tarted up from time to time in the hope of inspiring people to get out and see the film! Thankfully, Hendricks' acting is so good that the director doesn't have to worry about this in her case.
Daniela Cicarelli
You know you're scraping the bottom of the barrel when you're looking at a woman who is mostly famous for being engaged to a Brazillian footballer! For those who don't know, the main claim to fame that this former fashion model now holds is that she was once engaged to Ronaldo for a grand total of three months. Is there nobody that the cult of celebrity won't turn into a newsworthy icon? It honestly seems like anybody will do these days.
