Can You Beat Thanos At This MCU Villain Quiz? Try It!

"You know, I'm 1,500 years old. I've killed twice as many enemies as that. And every one of them would have rather killed me than not succeeded. I'm only alive because fate wants me alive. Thanos is just the latest of a long line of bastards, and he'll be the latest to feel my vengeance - fate wills it so." -- Thor, Infinity War

That line about Thanos being the latest of a long line of bastards is also meta in a way because the dangerous alien is yet another villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Today, we're going to quiz you on some MCU villains form the movies to see just how well you know them.

Simply put, there are some villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who have more character, more depth, and more screentime than others. Not every villain from a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie is going to be on here because others, like Loki or Thanos, have more to them that we can quiz you on.

Because Infinity War has been out for well over a month at the time we're publishing this quiz, there is a question near the end that handles a spoiler from the movie. It does not have to do with the ending, nor does it spoil anything from Avengers 4. But it is a question that those who saw the movie or got it spoiled because of the ruthless internet will know.

Question 1

What has Thanos spent the Marvel Cinematic Universe looking for?

We're going to start with one of the easier questions on here because, come on, this is what the majority of the Marvel movies have been building towards. Thanos wants something and he's not going to stop until he gets it, which then leads to Loki leading an invasion on the humans, the Earth being attacked numerous times, and Josh Brolin getting paid a ton of money to do voiceover work for a purple alien with a big chin. What is Thanos looking for?

Question 2

Where is the Winter Soldier originally from?

Well, if you can't get this one, then you'll understand if we're a bit concerned. While the Winter Soldiers now has a new name that we'll get to later, this character's time as a villain came under the Winter Soldier name. If you ever go and play any of the older Marvel games that existed before this character was introduced in the MCU - Ultimate Alliance, for example - I get the feeling you'll enjoy this version of the character more. We love you, Sebastian Stan!

Question 3

True or False: Loki is older than Thor

What a ride it's been for Loki and Tom Hiddleston in the past few years, huh? Loki went from a sly jerk to leading an invasion on the Earth to surviving only off his wits as the rest of the universe changed. People would think that Loki would be more divisive, yet he's almost always considered one of the top three - and usually the top two depending on how people view Winter Soldier -villains in the MCU. Is he older than Thor?

Question 4

What was the Red Skull's true name?

Am I playing the Star Spangled Man as I write this question? Yes, I am. After all, the Red Skull acknowledged he knew Captain America's work, so he probably enjoyed this song too. But before we knew this HYDRA leader as the Red Skull, he had a real name which he still used even by the time he fights Captain America. It's just easy to remember him as the Red Skull because, well, that's the character's name. But what's Skull's real name?

Question 5

What is the hinted explanation as to why the Red Skull was deformed?

As one can figure out early, The First Avenger is a movie about finding one's self. Steve Rogers goes from frail, asthmatic young man in Brooklyn to the Star Spangled Man. But don't forget about Dr. Abraham Eskrine, the man behind the Super Soldier Serum who turns Steve into Captain America. Before fleeing to America, Eskrine once tried the Super Soldier Serum on the man that eventually became the Red Skull, but something went wrong and deformed this guy. What happened?

Question 6

What country is The Winter Soldier found in during World War II?

Now to know this one, you'd have to have watched The First Avenger...but if you're taking this quiz, you would have to have likely watched nearly all of these movies, right? So we know now that The Winter Soldier participated in World War II on the side of the Allied Forces as James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, best friend (and fans want it to be more) of Steve Rogers. Bucky is presumed KIA when he falls off a train in this country, though he's later saved by HYDRA.

Question 7

What Infinity Stone does Red Skull (unknowingly) possess?

Technically, the Red Skull possesses what is known as the Tesseract, though the magical blue cube harbors one of the six Infinity Stones. Because Skull is not Odin or Thanos, all he knows about this is that there's great power tied to it and it can help HYDRA become powerful. Loki also gets his hands on the Tesseract later, which is how The Avengers happens. What Infinity Stone was in the Tesseract and, by extension, used by the Red Skull?

Question 8

True or False: Obadiah Stane worked with HYDRA

"But wait, Obadiah Stane worked for Stark Industries!" Ah, but I said with, not for. Although an argument could be made that those who are allied with HYDRA technically work for the terrorist organization, but let's not get into semantics now. This is a simple quiz about Marvel villains, not about the proper usage of words. Based on what we know from the first Iron Man movie and other films, do we have enough evidence that Stane worked with HYDRA? Or did he just work with the Ten Rings?

Question 9

Why did Obadiah Stane want to kill Tony? (The first time)

The first time being Stane calling the hit and ambush on Tony in Afghanistan, not when he takes Tony's heart from him and fights him at the end of the first Iron Man. Really, this is not a tough one, so don't try to make it too hard on yourself. It's actually fairly simple if you know Stane's character arc...reactor. Yes, we just made that joke. Yes, we want you to just go ahead and answer the question already, please.

Question 10

What is Stane's Iron Man suit known as?

Well, version of the Iron Man suit, though you know what we mean. I've said this before on TheQuiz, but I always enjoyed the risk that the first Iron Man took by having Tony outright kill Stane rather than leave him alive like other comic book heroes would. That was one of those seemingly-small decisions that put the Marvel Cinematic Universe in position to thrive as a full franchise. What is Stane's suit - and by extension, his alias - known as?

Question 11

Before becoming the Abomination, Emil Blonsky fought for...

I doubt we're ever going to see any of the true Hulk villains again because of legal issues, so let's throw those who enjoyed The Incredible Hulk a bone by including a picture of Emil Blonsky as the Abomination. Before he becomes...well, an Abomination, Blonsky was a British soldier loaned to General Ross to find and capture Bruce Banner. And no, Ross isn't really a villain. He's just kind of there. What group did Blonsky come from? Or was he technically from HYDRA?

Question 12

Justin Hammer's company is known as...

Like many other evil, mad geniuses, Justin Hammer owns a company that has a feud with the main hero's. Sorry, Tony Stark, but Justin Hammer still hasn't come close to replicating your technology. Hammer's corporation is essentially like a rich person choosing between buying a Pontiac or a Porsche. Sure, it's good enough for some people, but are you sure that you don't want to go with the Porsche if you have the money? What is Hammer's company known as?

Question 13

Whiplash comes from what country?

Let me just start off with this awesome quote from Whiplash. "If you can make God bleed, people will cease to believe in him, and there will be blood in the water and the sharks will come. All I have to do is sit here and watch as the world will consume you." Mickey Rourke, thriving after a successful boxing career, was so great in this movie and he certainly made Whiplash's time on the big screen memorable. Where did Whiplash come from?

Question 14

What type of bird does Whiplash want?

Every villain has something they cherish, whether it's money or a cat. Whiplash, on the other hand, likes birds. They're not coarse or rough and they don't get everywhere. In fact, the only other thing Whiplash wants from Justin Hammer - other than seeing Tony Stark die - is his bird, though Hammer gets him another bird. Good enough, I guess. The bird was on of these four types, so try to remember what color it was. That will definitely help.

Question 15

How does Whiplash die?

Two Iron Man movies, two main villains die. Well, that is if you count Whiplash as the main villain, which the majority of fans (including myself) seem to do. Others say it's Justin Hammer, so feel free to let us know who you think it is. Anyway, Whiplash does not survive Iron Man 2 and instead dies in the film's climax. What was it that did Mickey Rourke and his scars in? Ah, that's what you and your bird are here to tell us.

Question 16

True or False: Justin Hammer dies in Iron Man 2

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but Justin Hammer is an idiot. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has done a great job of presenting villains who are sympathetic or human, though Hammer is neither and gets everything he has coming to him. So when the Hammer Drones go crazy and nearly blow up part of New York, you know that Hammer is going to suffer. Does he survive the movie and just go to prison, or does someone kill him?

Question 17

What country does Loki, technically, first attack?

You may be thinking this is a trick question, but remember Loki's appearances throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Technically, the Battle of New York is not Loki's first attack on the Earth. So it's in one of these other four countries, which we're going to let you figure out. We did say that this was a quiz that would have some hard questions that would force you to try remembering things. Either that or you've already answered and got this right.

Question 18

Fill in the blank: Loki is called a ___ god by the Hulk.

Because there have been some tough questions on here, let's get you an easy one from one of the MCU's most memorable scenes. So Loki is in Stark Tower being a card carrying villain when The Hulk shows up and starts beating the God out of Loki. Loki then reminds the jolly green giant that he is a god, which leads to Loki getting hit even more before the Hulk drops this one-liner and leaves. Go and fill the blank in!

Question 19

What is the genetic manipulation that Aldrich Killian uses?

I try not to get too opinionated about what I don't like in quizzes, though it seems to be a common consensus among fans that Aldrich Killian is not the villain that Obadiah Stane, Whiplash, or even justin Hammer was. This won't take long, as we're looking for the genetic manipulation that Killian uses on himself and his soldiers. The same thing that hasn't been mentioned since Iron Man 3 despite Pepper being injected with it. Retcon? What's the answer here?

Question 20

The Mandarin does not compare Americans to fortune cookies in the following way

"President Ellis, you continue to resist my attempts to educate you, sir. And now, you've missed me again. You don't know who I am. You don't know where I am. And you'll NEVER see me coming." That's from a different speech, but why couldn't we have gotten this Mandarin as the main villain in Iron Man 3? Although, you're not going to see me complain about the twist and what we got from this version. In his famous fortune cookie speech, Mandarin does not draw this comparison.

Question 21

What is Loki's relation to Thor?

This is a character that we have seen evolve exponentially in the Marvel Universe. In fact, some would say he did a complete 180 and actually somewhat started to resemble a hero. We keep him on this list because he was introduced to us as a villain, and never fully got his redemption. Not in the movies at least, because in reality, fans all over the world were more than happy to forgive and forget with Loki. He has even become one of the fan favorites, which is quite unprecedented with MCU villains.

Question 22

Alexander Pierce technically holds what role on the World Security Council?

Alexander Pierce, in a way, is a character with a small name and a big ego. We know how powerful Pierce is and how much influence he has in S.H.I.E.L.D., but he has a fairly small role with the World Security Council, a group that had demonstrated considerable power in previous movies. Remember when they were going to nuke New York to kill the Chitauri? In terms of his relationship with the World Security Council, what is Alexander Pierce's role?

Question 23

Who kills Alexander Pierce?

People have called Pierce boring or controversial, but he's the type of villain I'd have loved to see in another Marvel movie. He's calculating, he's influential, and he's a strong contrast to both Captain America and Nick Fury. Maybe we'll see a younger Pierce in Captain Marvel next year, which would make sense since we're getting a younger Nick Fury and Phil Coulson. As The Winter Soldier draws to a close, which of the following characters finally ends Pierce's life?

Question 24

True or False: The Winter Soldier remembers he's Bucky by the movie's ending

The Winter Soldier is usually among the top three movies by most Marvel fans for how Bucky Barnes was treated as The Winter Soldier. It's genuinely emotional when Steve asks in amazement, "Bucky?" and the Winter Soldier has no idea who that is. The movie ends with the implication - and confirmed later - that Bucky saves Captain America from downing before running off. Does that mean that Bucky remembers who he was, or do we get a scene that confirms this? Or does he never remember who he is TWS?

Question 25

The Winter Soldier did not kill this person

That is a terrifying picture of The Winter Soldier and, if you knew of his exploits, you would agree with the idea that's fairly frightening. To think that this was once Bucky Barnes and to now think that, so long as Bucky survives Avengers 4 and everything returns to normal, he can never wipe away all of the crimes he committed and people he killed. The world's deadliest assassin puled off many kills, but he was not responsible for the death of this person.

Question 26

Where does Bucky go to learn more about himself?

Post-credit scenes have become a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the point where Spider-Man: Homecoming kindly mocked the premise. One of The Winter Soldier's final scenes gives us a glimpse at Bucky returning to a place he once knew to try learning more about the man Captain America said he was. Was it Washington D.C., given that's where the movie took place, or was it somewhere in New York? Or, was there an implication he was going to all three?

Question 27

Ultron was developed with what mantra in mind?

Age of Ultron is a divisive movie, but most people seemed to enjoy the character of Ultron as a whole. He's a super-robot built partially by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner with a mantra in mind. It's something Tony and Bruce discuss in reference to Loki, HYDRA, and all of the attacks on Earth by those with powers. It's probably a good thing that Ultron doesn't live long enough to see Thanos show up and start destroying New York. What's the mantra?

Question 28

True or False: Ultron's programming was inspired by J.A.R.V.I.S.

This may sound complicated, so let's try to simplify it because we like you. Tony Stark obviously had success with J.A.R.V.I.S. as an AI that could help him save the world and recover from hangovers. Ultron does not sound like J.A.R.V.I.S. because Paul Bettany does not voice him, that much is true. But when Tony and Bruce were creating Ultron, was Stark's previous success with J.A.R.V.I.S. a key part of the intended programming? Or was Ultron intended to be something different?

Question 29

Who properly destroys Ultron?

So the Age of Ultron only goes on for about two hours in movie time and a few days in Marvel Cinematic Universe time. Even Thanos' time as Galactic Warlord is most likely going to last longer than that! So much for Ultron being the ultimate protector of Earth who would remake the world without humans. Silly robot. Anyway, which of the following Avengers finally puts the movie to an end - I mean, finally destroys Ultron and ends his age.

Question 30

Who is inside the Yellowjacket suit?

We're just about a month away from Ant-Man & The Wasp at the time I'm writing this quiz and I'm getting more and more excited. The original Ant-Man was kind of a sleeper hit - despite the Yellowjacket not being the most memorable villain for a lot of people - and the new baddie, Ghost, seems like she actually has some depth and purpose. We didn't hate Yellowjacket, but eh. Who was the main antagonist in the first Ant-Man movie?

Question 31

Whose technology did The Vulture primarily use for weapons?

I've said before that I'm not the biggest fan of Spider-Man: Homecoming, though I will acknowledge that Michael Keaton's Vulture is easily my favorite part of the movie. Adrian Toomes is a villain with purpose who's driven by more than just a desire to be evil. He's been wronged in the past and sees using this technology to make and sell his own weapons as a viable opportunity to make money. Whose technology is he refining and re-selling like a chop shop?

Question 32

True or False: The Vulture survives Spider-Man: Homecoming

As Spider-Man: Homecoming was made by Sony, the tone can be different at times than what it is in a normal Disney-made Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. Homecoming goes more for cheap laughs and family moments than the average Marvel movie does, which we understand. At least we didn't get advertisements shoehorned into the movie. Does the Vulture die in this movie like other Marvel villains have, or does he go on to survive with the idea he may appear in a future film?

Question 33

Who kills Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2?

I'll be honest and say when I was gathering pictures and fact-checking for this quiz, I forgot about Ego and the Guardians of the Galaxy. I think part of it is those are stranger movies in terms of tone and aren't so much about the villains as they are the rag-tag group of misfits. Ego has a cool gimmick with him being a planet, but the movie isn't central to him the way, say, The First Avenger is about Red Skull. Who kills Ego?

Question 34

What allowed Hela to escape her prison?

As the first primary female villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (when it came to movies, at least), Hela didn't disappoint in Thor: Ragnarok. Sure, she does some strange things for the sake of laughs, but she's genuinely threatening - and oh no, she just ripped Thor's eye out. Good thing he's almost certain to wind up with a new one so Chris Hemsworth can just use both eyes on set. What allowed Hela to escape from her long incarceration?

Question 35

Who did Loki pose as at the end of Thor: The Dark World?

There seems to be a running joke among Marvel fans that the first two Thor movies are fairly unmemorable. With that said, I'm sure fans were surprised when they went to see Ragnarok in November and saw Loki posing as this character in Asgard. You know, like Thor wasn't going to find out given his relationship to Loki and the character in question. It's a twist! Yeah, it was when The Dark World ended. Who was Loki posing as using magic?

Question 36

How is Killmonger related to T'Challa?

Oh yes, we finally get to see Michael B. Jordan in a Marvel Cinematic Universe. Remember when Michael B. Jordan was The Human Torch in 2015's Fantastic 4? That marks two Human Torches who have gone on to become major stars and fan favorites in the MCU. The other? Chris Evans, of course, who played Johnny Storm all the way back in 2005's Fantastic 4 and the sequel in 2007. Do you remember how Jordan's Killmonger is related to T'Challa's Black Panther?

Question 37

What is Killmonger's real name?

Michael B. Jordan is quickly becoming this generation's Samuel L. Jackson as the charismatic black male actor who is in everything and always dominates the scene. It's Michael B. Jordan and Donald Glover, though I'd give it to MBJ because he was on The Wire, my favorite show of all-time. I just watched Fahrenheit 451 on HBO with Jordan and he was fantastic. But back to his character from Black Panther. Which of the following names is Killmonger's real, Wakandan name?

Question 38

Thanos does not employ this character in the Black Order

Thanos has three ways of recruiting soldiers to his cause: Intimidation; Adoption; or simple recruitment. While Thanos has plenty of adopted children, only some have an opportunity to serve in the Black Order, which is essentially his highest-ranked army that begins the assault on New York to start Infinity War. That's not really a spoiler because it's in all of the trailers so, don't complain yet. Just wait until we up the ante to finish the quiz. Who is not in the Black Order?

Question 39

Thanos originates from what planet?

We like you, so here's a warning: one of the options below is where Thanos comes from in the comic books, but we're looking for the Marvel Cinematic Universe version. Kind of. It's the same planet, but it's a moon in the comics of another planet. The MCU version, as we saw in Infinity War, is its own planet in its own solar system. That all make sense, right? Good, now go and tell us what the proper answer is.

Question 40

Thanos gets an Infinity Stone from this thought-to-be-deceased character

We did say there was a question with spoilers for Infinity War because the movie has been out for so long and the internet is ruthless with spoiling things. We see a character in Infinity War who had been presumed dead in other movies return to give Thanos one of the Infinity Stones. That's all we're going to say. No gender pronouns, no vague hints. You either saw it in the movie or you had it spoiled, so good luck here!
