Can You Beat Thanos At This MCU Quiz? Try It!

You've just taken your first steps into a larger universe, one with super soldiers, living legends who kind of live up to the legends; people with breath-taking anger management issues; a couple of master assassins, and demigods. Oh, and Tony Stank. Because Stan Lee called him Tony Stank, we're going to do the same.

Today, we have for you yet another Marvel quiz as we prepare for Ant-Man & The Wasp and try to get over everything that happened in Infinity War, which  many are calling the best superhero movie of any franchise or fandom. We personally take no issue to insult to such a claim.

There's no real basic ground rules here other than this is a simple trivia quiz. Some questions will be true or false, others will have all four answer slots available to use. There are no trick questions, though you should be advised that this quiz covers the entire movie timeline of the MCU. We're not using TV shows here, though we will make a reference or two. Nothing too complicated and nothing that spoils anything, we promise.

If you're ready to take those steps, Mr. Stank (or Ms. Stank), grab your favorite weapon, shout Wakanda Forever, and let's do this.

Question 1

Who is older? Steve Rogers or Bucky Barnes?

It's become tradition at this point to begin a Marvel Cinematic Universe quiz with something related to Captain America because he, technically, is The First Avenger. (That, and he's easily my favorite of the superheroes we've gotten to this point in the movies.) As the Steve/Bucky relationship is one that many fans love and prefer to what they have in the comics, let's start with a fairly easy one for most Marvel fans. Which of the two, at least in the MCU, is slightly older?

Question 2

What is the point of Tony Stark's arc reactor?

Remember, there are several types of arc reactors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though we're going to focus on the one that Tony Stark and Ho Yinsen build in Afghanistan. While the arc reactor does play a major part in how the Iron Man suits function and work, there's another major reason why the Merchant of Death and his new friend build it in a cave with a box of scraps. Even if you haven't seen Iron Man in a while, you should know this.

Question 3

True or False: Pepper Potts and Tony Stark, as of Infinity War, are married

Given where Tony Stark began the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's nice to see he and Pepper have been loyal to one another for nearly a decade by the time Infinity War starts. They've broken up here and there, but we're not seeing Tony be a true playboy anymore. Infinity War takes place roughly seven or eight years after the two truly get together in Iron Man 2, but are they married by the time Thanos and friends arrive on Earth?

Question 4

Natasha Romanoff trained with what U.S.S.R. group?

You might be thinking that this is a trick question, but we promise it's not. Natasha Romanoff, as you might have figured, is Russian and grew up in the days of the old U.S.S.R. It was her training over there that allowed her to become a deadly assassin and future S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in America. That training also led to, as she says, a lot of red on her ledger. What was the group that Natasha received her training (and hinted PTSD) from?

Question 5

What was S.H.I.E.L.D. originally known as?

In other words, what did the S.S.R. stand for? You'll know this if you've seen Agent Carter or if you paid close attention in the Captain America movies, but S.H.I.E.L.D. was not always known as the Strategic Homeland, Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division. The group originally had another name before transitioning into S.H.I.E.L.D. around the 1950s. Agent Carter's unfortunate cancellation robbed us of the opportunity to see the transition, as well as the man that Peggy wound up marrying. What was the S.S.R.?

Question 6

How many realms is Thor tasked with protecting?

There's a joke among Marvel fans that the first two Thor movies are extremely unmemorable, a theory which I've acknowledged and slightly agree with despite liking the fist Thor movie. It's good enough and the acting is far better than people remember. These movies introduce the concept of realms, which Thor is tasked with protecting so the universe doesn't fall into chaos. Kind of. At least Thor has Mjolnir when he's worthy of holding the hammer. How many realms are there?

Question 7

What is killing Tony Stark in Iron Man 2?

When I did my Marvel rewatch leading up to Infinity War, I was surprised at how divisive Iron Man 2 seems to be. Part of it seems to be that Tony Stark is more of the focal point than Iron Man, which is a fair argument until you remember that most of the Marvel movies are about the character rather than the superhero. Iron Man 2 also sees an erratic Tony Stark who is dying from which of the following things? Spoiler: he does not die.

Question 8

Where is Bruce hiding when Natasha finds him in The Avengers?

It's safe to say that by the time The Incredible Hulk ends, Bruce Banner wants nothing to do with the United States anymore. At least, he doesn't want to be there after General Ross found him last time, so Bruce goes off to hide elsewhere for a year. Yes, it's been a year and an acting change when Natasha finds him - though she says S.H.I.E.L.D. never lost him - when these two finally meet in The Avengers. Where was Bruce working as a doctor?

Question 9

True or False: Peter Parker appears in the Iron Man movies

Obviously, Peter doesn't appear as Spider-Man, but there was a fan theory in the past few years that a young Peter actually appears in the Iron Man movies. We know from Civil War and Homecoming that Peter is a huge fan of Tony's, enough to where he'd be the type of kid to wear an Iron Man mask or ask him for an autograph. Have the theories that a young Peter appears in one of the Iron Man movies been confirmed or debunked?

Question 10

Steve Rogers battled this illness as a sickly youth

If you had any doubts about the type of man that Steve Rogers is, just remember that he was so sickly and frail, yet still managed to survive the Great Depression. That's when you start to tear up because you realize that Bucky most likely helped him survive even when medical supplies were hard to obtain. They were with each other until the end of the line, indeed. Which of these illnesses did Steve battle and survive before becoming Captain America?

Question 11

True or False: As of June 2018, The Avengers (2012) is still among the top five grossing movies ever

This may seem like a weird one to include on here, but you have to think about how important a superhero movie The Avengers was. The first Avengers, at least. Marvel had five standalone movies building up to the moment where Black Widow, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, and Hawkeye all teamed up - and one of those movies, The Incredible Hulk, has essentially been retconned to this point. The Avengers made a ton of money and was once the third-highest grossing movie ever, but is it still top five?

Question 12

In which movie did Hawkeye make his cinematic debut?

Some concept art for Avengers 4 leaked at the time I'm writing this (June 5) and Hawkeye is in the artwork! Yes! It's looking more and more like w're going to see Clint Barton return in Avengers 4, although it'd likely be as Ronin rather than Hawkeye. Ronin is an alias Clint used in the comics - and here's what's interesting, he wasn't even alive for the Infinity Wars arc in the comics! Everything is changing. When did Hawkeye first appear?

Question 13

How doesn't Steve try to remind Bucky who he is?

Normally, I'd make a crack about Captain America and his mighty shield here, but The Winter Soldier is just such a heartbreaking movie. Steve spends the movie trying to find a place for himself before learning that Bucky survived World War II and now works for HYDRA as the Winter Soldier. It gets to the point where Steve gives up on the fight and is willing to let Bucky kill him, but not before he tries to save him. Steve doesn't do this, though.

Question 14

How long did Steve know Bucky killed Tony's parents?

It's 2018, so I think we can afford to spoil the following plot elements. The Winter Soldier is the one who killed Howard and Maria Stark on December 16, 1991, leaving Tony an orphan. Captain America then learns about this and hides the truth from Tony, which eventually culminates in the big final fight at the end of Civil War. Based on everything that is said in the movies, roughly how long did Steve keep the horrible truth from Tony?

Question 15

What is Tony's nickname for Rhodes?

I'm not even going to make the Terrence Howard "mayne" joke because I went and rewatched Iron Man 1, when it was Howard playing War Machine instead of Don Cheadle, and he did a fine job, mayne. It's in that movie that Tony calls Rhodes by the following nickname, a moniker which he uses in future movies to bother his lifelong friend. It's a weird nickname that doesn't really fit Rhodes, but you should remember it once you see it.

Question 16

True or False: Bruce Banner did not help with Ultron's creation

Science Bros! The relationship between Bruce Banner and Tony Stark as genuine friends has been heartwarming, even moreso when you remember Bruce had to isolate himself because of the other guy and because Tony has always been so self-centered that he only allows Rhodes, Pepper, and J.A.R.V.I.S. into his life. Tony was the one who built Ultron, this we know, but is it true that Bruce Banner was not at all involved with this project? Try to remember this one.

Question 17

Why is Sam Wilson not with the Avengers in Age of Ultron?

After getting so much screentime in The Winter Soldier, it only made sense to think The Falcon would play a major part in Age of Ultron, right? Well, Age of Ultron is an Avengers movie and, with that said, only features the main six Avengers. That's before Hulk leaves, Clint and Tony retire, and Thor goes off to learn more about the Infinity Stones. What is the exact reason given as to why Sam doesn't appear until the movie's climax?

Question 18

The Vision has which Infinity Stone in his head?

If you went and saw Infinity War, which I'm assuming you did if you're taking this quiz, then I think you know how this ends for Vision. There were so many times throughout the movie where they could have just ripped the stone out to save Thanos from collecting all the stones, but that's not how the cookie crumbled. As we know, there are six Infinity Stones and one of them is the bright yellow/orange one in Vision's head. Which one is it?

Question 19

What is the main ship that the Guardians of the Galaxy use?

Because Peter Quill was taken from Earth in the 1980s, it only makes sense he'd want to name his ship after a famous singer from that time period. If you're confused on who these singers are, the last names refer to Pat Benatar (Hit Me With Your Best Shot), Michael Jackson (Thriller, Beat It, etc.), Madonna (Like A Virgin), and Eddie Money (Two Tickets to Paradise). Which of the following hit artists from the 1980s did Quill name his ship after?

Question 20

The Ant-Man suit was developed in part because of the...

We could have asked something about Scott Lang or Hank Pym here, but I just love the Ant-Man suit so much. It's going to be fun seeing what happens in Ant-Man & The Wasp, even if the trailers are hinting at heavy screentime for Luis. Hey, Thanos, I know how you can wipe out with a snap of the fingers. As we think about who will die and who Stan Lee will cameo as (I'm guessing someone on that boat), what helped develop the Ant-Man suit?

Question 21

True or False: Hulk is capable of speaking in complete sentences

I know the joke is that Hulk can really only say his name and "HULK SMASH!", but the Marvel Cinematic Universe has done their part to show the Bruce Banner part of Hulk. We see human actions like remorse and pure anger that's more than wanting to just destroy things. By the time we get to Infinity War and Hulk is capable of fighting with Thanos for a bit, is the jolly green giant that terrifies even Loki capable of speaking in complete sentences?

Question 22

Doctor Strange also goes by the name...

Benedict Cumberbatch is awesome. How can you beat an actor that risks his own life to stop a robbery? There's no indication he used his magic or the cloak to help him, but we love him all the same. And no, Doctor Strange is not his made-up name, as Peter Parker seemed to think. He was Stephen Strange, a surgeon. That in turn makes him Doctor Strange. Gosh! Which of the other names has Doctor Strange also gone by recently?

Question 23

Captain America grew up a fan of what New York baseball team?

Seriously? Seriously. This is a major part of Steve's character and I imagine that's his face when he realized how much baseball changed since he was frozen? Pitchers don't have to hit anymore in one league? The World Series is now played at night? Players do bat flips and "pimp" their home runs? I could use a comic that's just Steve in 2012 adjusting to everything he's learned. Which of the following New York baseball teams did Steve root for growing up?

Question 24

Wanda Maximoff comes from what country?

Wanda is one of the more interesting newer Avengers because she's still so young and flawed, which adds a dimension to her character. We know that Wanda didn't want to cause the civilian deaths in Civil War or enable everything that happened in Infinity War, but it happens because she's still learning - and while it may infuriate some fans, it's good to have someone like that with so much screentime. Which of the following countries does Wanda come from?

Question 25

True or False: The Black Panther is the King of Wakanda?

Is it possible that T'Challa, also known as the Black Panther, is the most influential superhero of recent times? There's the black pride element, there's how well his movie did, and there's just people wanting to be like T'Challa. It's awesome to see in a time where superheroes' flaws are exposed just as much as we see what makes them lovable. Based on how Wakanda works, is T'Challa currently the King of Wakanda, or does someone else hold that title?

Question 26

Why does Spider-Man originally turn down joining The Avengers?

The whole point of Spider-Man: Homecoming, or so I thought, was that it was the buildup to Spider-Man eventually joining The Avengers. This does happen in Infinity War, but Peter originally turns down Tony Stark at the end of Homecoming. It's a decision that takes Tony by complete surprise, especially because he had called a press conference to announce the newest Avenger. The decision does seem to please Tony, if only because Peter acknowledges he doesn't want to be an Avenger for this reason.

Question 27

True or False: Bucky regains most of his memories when Steve leaves him in Wakanda after Civil War?

This is admittedly because "most" is a point of view and some fans will say Bucky has remembered XX percent of his memories. You can look at it whichever way you want. But by the time Civil War ends and Steve leaves Bucky in Wakanda, there's no doubt the former Winter Soldier is at least doing better. I think he could use a haircut, but I also prefer short-haired Sebastian Stan, thank you very much. Does Bucky have most of his memories back?

Question 28

What is the name of Tony's new(er) AI in his suit?

J.A.R.V.I.S. served a fine job as Tony's AI for years, but his consciousness was somewhat transferred to Vision in Age of Ultron. I'm not a math or science person, but I'm sure some YouTube channel has already explained it better than I can. With J.A.R.V.I.S. gone, Tony creates a new artificial intelligence for his suit to lend him advice and help him win fights. What is the name of said program, which we like despite it not having Paul Bettany voice it?

Question 29

Where do Thor and Hulk reunite in Ragnarok?

If you saw Thor: Ragnarok, you would know this. If you saw Infinity War, you would know this. In fact, I'm going to assume that anyone who gets this wrong misclicked because they were playing it on their cell phone. I just got done watching a video of Tony Stark's best sarcastic remarks so you'll have to excuse me if my snark is coming out in full, New York-originated form here. Where do Thor and Hulk reunite in the most recent Thor movie?

Question 30

Star-Lord uses what to play music?

There were no iPhones in the 1980s when Peter Quill was kidnapped, so he has to use this "aged" technology to play music. I don't quite know how he manages to get all of the music - I think it's implied that some people go to Earth and buy records? - but whatever, Guardians movies have always been about doing weird stuff. How is it that Peter Quill, also known as Sta-Lord, is able to play music in space? What doe she use?

Question 31

Peter Parker is in what grade when Infinity War starts?

I expect Spider-Man 2 to change this like how Sony messed up other key facts with Homecoming - seriously, an eight-year gap between The Avengers and Homecoming? It's not even eight years between The Avengers and Infinity War - but for now, Peter Parker is in one of these grades. If you apply some basic math and a small line in Infinity War, you'll be able to get this right. It's not that complicated, at least not until Sony gets involved.

Question 32

What trick did Thor and Loki constantly use in battle?

We're using the all caps here because Thor screams it in Ragnarok and you know how loud he can get, so I'd imagine he writes it in all caps if he describing the trick. It's a battle tactic that apparently helped the two brothers survive numerous encounters and even allowed them to live on Sakkar...before Loki betrayed Thor once again. You should be able to remember the name of this trick, I hope, especially how it comes at Loki's expense.

Question 33

What name does Bucky Barnes now go by? (Other than Bucky)

If you watched Black Panther, you'd know this. If you watched Infinity War - oh wait, I did this trick already. Come on, this should be easy with how popular Bucky is in the Marvel fandom and how well the people who make these movies understand that. Let's just hope that Bucky doesn't go away for good in Avengers 4 the way it's looking like Captain America is going to. Rather than Winter Soldier, what is Bucky's other nickname right now?

Question 34

How old is Captain America during Infinity War?

Steve Rogers is coming closer and closer to being 100 years old! Well, he's technically and physically in his early 30s, but being frozen in ice makes a man older. That much goes without saying, so we'll let you do the math and figure this one out if you remember how old Steve was in The First Avenger. You have to admit that Cap looks good for someone who's been alive for close to a century. How old is Cap in Infinity War?

Question 35

True or False: Tony Stark is on Earth in Infinity War when the snap happens

We've given you a ton of tough ones, so let's end this with an easy one. Tony Stark obviously begins Infinity War on Earth and he then fights Thanos on Titan, but what planet is he on when the infamous snap happens? Is Tony back on Earth with the other Avengers, or is he still in space crying after seeing so many deaths around him? Like w said, this is extremely easy, so good luck and get this one right.
