Like any other term that has been used as an insult for an extended period of time, people are now embracing the word "basic" and using it to describe themselves. But is this really a characteristic to aspire to? After all, being basic implies that you have very little personality of your own and means that you're complacent with being 100 percent in sync with the mainstream. But if this continues to spread, the culture will eventually lose all sense of individuality.
Of course, we're all prone to being basic at certain times in our life. For instance, it just makes sense to wear flannel during the fall -- and so what if you're enjoying a Pumpkin Spiced Latte at the same time? But following trends just because it's what your friends or your favorite reality stars do is not always for the best, and sometimes you really need to stop yourself and ask if you've taken an unhealthy amount of selfies within the last 24 hours.
