When Supernatural debuted back in 2005, creator Eric Kripke wasn't entirely sure that the series would even make it to season 2. His story about about two brothers continuing the “family business” concluded after five seasons, at which point, he stepped down as showrunner. However, the show continued on without him and with season 13 just beginning, Supernatural is showing no signs of slowing down. Jared Padalecki and Jenson Ackles want the series to make it to 300 episodes, which gives us at least one more season after this one.

The show has come a long way over the past decade. Sam and Dean have spent time in Heaven, Hell and just about everywhere in between. They've gone toe to toe with angels, demons, and even managed to kill Death. The Winchester brothers have hung out with God, defeated the Devil, and not even dying multiple times has stopped them from “saving people” and “hunting things”.

Have you been following Sam and Dean since the beginning? Do you know all the words to “Carry On Wayward Son”? Have you watched the episodes so many times that you feel ready to be a hunter yourself? Well then, you might just know enough to do well on this quiz. Test your knowledge and find out, How Well Do You Remember Supernatural?

Question 1

What were Sam and Dean hunting in the pilot?

The idea for this particular Big Bad was most likely taken from La Llorona, which comes from Mexican folklore. When we meet them as adults in the pilot, Sam and Dean hadn’t spoken in two years. However, the latter sought out the former after their father went missing. The only way to find him was to follow in his footsteps. So, the Winchester brothers attempted to solve the last known case that their dad was working on when he disappeared. What creature were they hunting?

Question 2

How did John Winchester die?

John Winchester probably wouldn’t win any prizes for father of the year, but he sure did love his boys. Much of Supernatural’s first season was about Sam and Dean’s search for their dad and much of its second dealt with the aftermath of his death. Jeffery Dean Morgan’s presence continued to be felt on the show, even after he was gone. Being a hunter is a rough gig and tends to give one a rather brief shelf life. John lasted longer than most, but what ultimately took out Papa Winchester?

Question 3

In which episode does Castiel make his first appearance?

Misha Collins’s Castiel has become such an integral part of Supernatural that it almost feels like the fan-favorite angel has been around since the pilot. However, Cas first showed up in season 4, making probably the best entrance the show has ever seen. Castiel was the first angel to appear in the series, which expanded the mythology into completely new territory. Cas rescued Dean from Hell, and his journey with the Winchesters has continued for the better part of a decade.

Question 4

Who is this?

Played to perfection by Loretta Devine, this incredibly talented psychic is a longtime pal of John Winchester. She was actually the one who opened his eyes to the reality of monsters lurking in the dark. John went to her to figure out what killed Mary, but all she could be sure of was that it was “real evil”. She appeared in season 1 episode, “Home”, and was meant to return in the finale. However, Devine was too busy, so Bobby Singer was created in her stead.

Question 5

What is this symbol called?

When a hunter needs to immobilize a demon, this is one of the most powerful weapons in their arsenal. It’s a symbol, often a pentagram or a heptagram and once the demon moves into the area directly under or over it, they cannot escape, so long as it remains intact. A salt circle can be easily blown away, but this symbol is fixed to whatever surface it has been drawn on, which makes it a far more reliable means of capturing demons.

Question 6

What was Crowley before he became the king of Hell?

Crowley had some pretty creative ideas about what Hell should be. When he took over as king, he traded in torture for something else entirely. Of course, we all know torture is relative and it’s kind of tough to say if it would be worse to spend an eternity getting flayed or in the way that Crowley chose for his subjects to spend their afterlife. Perhaps in that sense, the guy truly is a visionary. He most certainly thinks so.

Question 7

When is Sam's birthday?

Jared Padalecki Sam Winchester Supernatural

Samuel “Sam” Winchester was named after his grandfather, Samuel Campbell. He is the younger sibling and Dean has always taken it upon himself to protect his baby brother. Sam and Dean have more than your typical family bond - and no, we are not talking about Wincest here. You probably know that he was only six months old when he lost his mother to the demon Azazel. Do you remember when that was though? What was the exact date of Sam’s birth?

Question 8

Which weapon from The Walking Dead had a recent cameo?

In season 12 episode, "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell" there was a not so subtle shout out to this particularly popular prop. The reference was especially funny, because the actor who wields this weapon on TWD once had a prominent role on Supernatural. It has been quite sometime since his character has appeared, but he will never be forgotten by the Winchesters or their legion of rabid fans. So, which TWD weapon was featured last season? The character wouldn't be caught dead without it.

Question 9

What kind of car is Baby?

'67 Chevy Impala Supernatural

Although fans have dubbed this vehicle the Metallicar, to Dean it is simply “baby”. Given to him by his father, this car has been through almost as much as the Winchesters themselves. These experiences, in conjunction with Dean's love for his dad, has made this automobile mean so much more to him and Sam than a typical ride. Luckily, Dean knows a thing or three about rebuilding cars, because he’s had to put “baby” back together quite a few times.

Question 10

What is Bobby Singer's soul tied to?

Bobby Singer, played by the amazing Jim Beaver, made his first appearance in season 1. He went on to become the Winchester brothers' closest confidant, most trusted ally and surrogate father. As important as he was to Sam and Dean, Bobby was equally beloved by fans, who were outraged by his tragic death. The fan favorite hardly disappeared after being mortally wounded, but viewers will probably never getting over losing him. What was keeping Bobby tied to the mortal coil?

Question 11

What name did this demon go by?

Portrayed most memorably by Katie Cassidy and Genevieve Cortese, this demon made her first appearance in season 3. She has been in more installments than any other demon, save Crowley. Initially, she convinced Sam that she was on the side of humanity, although Dean never fully bought into this idea. The elder Winchester was right, of course, and this demon's intentions were villainous from the start. By the time Sam and Dean finally killed her, she had already accomplished her goal.

Question 12

Who talked John into getting the Impala?

In typical Supernatural fashion, the origins of Dean's signature ride aren't as straightforward as you might think. When John went to the car lot that day, he was in the market for a VW van. Luckily, someone talked him out of this decision. Seriously, can you imagine Sam and Dean driving cross country in a van? For some reason, John was swayed that day. Can you remember who changed his mind? He's a pretty stubborn guy, so it would have to be someone equally obstinate.

Question 13

Who was the Trickster really?

The Trickster (a positively wicked Richard Speight Jr.) had been a fan favorite for several seasons before it was revealed that he wasn’t actually Loki at all. Caught between family squabbles of epic proportions, he chose to leave all of that nonsense behind. His identity as Loki was merely a form of “witness protection”. This was a shocking development that no one saw coming and sadly, this beloved character didn't last long once his true identity finally came to light.

Question 14

What was the name of the vampire Dean befriended in Purgatory?

Life was no picnic for Dean Winchester when he found himself in Purgatory. Luckily, he was able to befriend a vampire, who helped him learn the ropes. Together, these two found a way to free themselves and when this vampire found himself with another chance at life, he did his best not to spend it as a monster. All things considered, he was actually a pretty great guy. However, this is Supernatural, so he didn't get a happy ending. Can you remember his name?

Question 15

What does the inscription on The Colt, "non timebo mala" mean?

Forged in 1835 by Samuel Colt, the gun that can kill anything has been a huge part of Supernatural's mythology. Not only was it the first weapon of its kind in the series, but it was also the one that successfully took out Azazel. Prior to knowledge of the gun's existence, it seemed that there was nothing that could kill the demon who murdered Mary Winchester. Luckily, with Ruby's help, Bobby figured out how to keep the Colt in working order after that job was done.

Question 16

What pen name does Chuck use for his Supernatural book series?

From author to prophet to God himself, Chuck Shurley has had quite a journey on Supernatural. Portrayed by Rob Benedict, Chuck wrote a series of popular novels that not only followed the misadventures of Sam and Dean Winchester, but also allowed the writers to make some pretty funny jokes about the show's less than stellar episodes - anyone remember "Bugs"? Chuck's nom de plume was an amalgam of the names of two writers on the series. What did he go by?

Question 17

"Crossroad Blues" opened with the legend of what famed bluesman?

This musician may be considered the greatest bluesman who ever lived, but the truth is, initially, he really wasn’t very good. However, upon his return from traveling the Delta, he left friends astonished by being an incredible guitarist. Sure, it’s likely that he spent that year or so practicing, but songs like “Cross Road Blues”, “Me and the Devil Blues” and “Hellhound on My Trail” combined with seemingly overnight abilities and the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death made for a pretty convincing argument.

Question 18

In which episode were Sam and Dean transported into an alternate reality where their names were Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles?

Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles in Supernatural The French Mistake

Season 6 is widely considered the worst of the series, with this episode being a major low point. The brothers wound up in an alternate reality in which they were the stars of a TV show called Supernatural. Although the episode was mostly fiction, certain aspects were based in reality, such as Sam’s wife, Genevieve Cortese – she and Padalecki are married in real life. Some fans felt that it took meta a bit too far, but you can’t argue that this episode wasn’t fun!

Question 19

Which entity intended to use Dean as his vessel?

Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester in Supernatural

The Winchester brothers found themselves caught in a war between Heaven and Hell, and each side wanted a piece of them. The "dicks with wings" were sure that Dean would act as a vessel for one of their fiercest warriors. Unlike demons, angels need the consent of the person that they are possessing. Of course, Dean wasn't trying to be a pawn in someone else's game. Which angel was hoping to use Dean as his meat suit for the world's biggest smackdown?

Question 20

What chemical compound is harmful to Leviathans?

Leviathans were God's first beasts - and horrible CGI eye sores - that functioned as season 7's Big Bad. So great was their hunger, that God basically created Purgatory just to have a place to lock them up for all eternity. That is, until Castiel inadvertently set them free. More ancient than man or angel, Leviathans were unbelievably powerful. There was however, one chemical compound that could harm them enough to give the Winchesters a fighting chance. Do you remember what that was?

Question 21

Why does Sam always beat Dean at Rock, Paper, Scissors?

Sam and Dean Rock Paper Scissors Supernatural

Certain disputes simply cannot be settled any other way than the schoolyard way. Sam and Dean have had plenty of disagreements, with some obviously being more important than others. When it's time to decide what to eat, where to sleep or what to listen to in the car, these two have been working out their issues the same way for years. Dean blames the stupidity of the rules or his own bad luck, but seriously, why does Sam always beat him?

Question 22

Which long deceased character was resurrected in the season 11 finale?

Let's be honest, death doesn't mean much on Supernatural. After so many years on the air, fans thought that they had seen it all. The Winchester brothers had both died more than a couple of times and always returned to tell the tale. However, season 11's finale episode featured the return of a character who viewers thought would never truly come back. Although many initially questioned this resurrection, it proved to be a smart move when the character played a pivotal role in season 12.

Question 23

What must a fairy stop and count when it is spilled?

"Clap Your Hands if You Believe" is universally considered one of the weakest episodes of the show. It is also in season 6, which most fans feel was a series low point. There are plenty of unimpressive Big Bads to choose from in Supernatural's 6th season, but none quite so disappointing as fairies - well, except perhaps for those dragons. Despite their stature, fairies are powerful creatures, but if a particular substance is spilled in front of them, they must stop and count every bit.

Question 24

Who does Charlie help kill thanks to a popular novel by Frank L. Baum?

Fan Favorite Charlie Bradbury made her first appearance in season 7. She was a hacker, but getting wrapped up with Sam and Dean made her choose the life of a hunter. Sadly, this is also what led to her death. It is true that great female characters are few and far between on Supernatural and that they never seem to last long. Still, fans were more crushed by Charlie's death than perhaps any other, save Bobby's. Which temporary but powerful big bad did she help kill thanks to a book and an unlikely friend?

Question 25

What was Crowley’s name when he was human?

We know Crowley as a Crossroads Demon who clawed his way into becoming the King of Hell, but from 1661-1723, he was just a man. His life began as a drunken tailor who sold his soul for a mere three inches added to his…well, we’re sure you can figure it out. After his death, he was tortured until he became a demon, at which point he quickly rose through the ranks of Hell. He has since been both an enemy and an ally to the Winchesters.

Question 26

What was the name of Castiel’s vessel?

Castiel's vessel was a devout Christian, whose greatest ambition was to be of service to God. He welcomed the angel with open arms. As much as we all love him, Castiel did ruin poor Jimmy’s life. He took him away from his family and when Jimmy finally escaped, Cas’s return led directly to his death. Jimmy begged the angel to restore him, because the alternative would be Cas inhabiting his young daughter. No complaints though, because who wants to see Castiel portrayed by anyone but Misha Collins?

Question 27

Which song can you expect to hear when anything big is about to go down?

Music is a huge part of Supernatural. If you don't think so, try watching season 1 on Netflix - all the music has been replaced. The series just isn't the same without its classic rock backdrop! From the very beginning, creator Eric Kripke knew that music would be a vital aspect of the show. Although their taste in music assumedly differs greatly, you can always expect to hear this signature track backing important recaps before the season finale. What is it?

Question 28

Sam suffers from coulrophobia, which is a fear of what?

Jared Padalecki as Sam in Supernatural Everybody Loves a Clown

Season 2 gives us our first glimpse into something that Sam is actually afraid of. The brothers investigation into a string of murders leads them to a rakshasa. This creature from Hindu mythology is often portrayed as a shapeshifter who feeds on human flesh. Because they need an invite to get into someone’s home, this one took the form of something else in order to be welcomed in by children. Unfortunately for Sam, it was the one thing that he was afraid of.

Question 29

What is the name of the show's 200th episode?

Two hundred episodes is a huge milestone for any series and Supernatural just kept right on going. Writers chose something very special for this important installment. The 5th episode of the 10th season found Sam and Dean investigating a missing teacher, only to discover a musical based on Carver Edlund's Supernatural books. In other words, the school play was about the lives of the Winchester brothers. This hilarious episode was a love letter to the show's fans. What was it called?

Question 30

What was was Metatron's job in Heaven?

When you really think about it, the idea that there are angels, God, and a Heaven in the Supernatural universe isn't actually all that odd. There are already demons and the devil himself, who is a fallen angel, seeks out Sam as his very own vessel. Still, the angels are a far cry from demons. They're stronger, more regimented, and they generally don't take kindly to possessing vessels without their consent. They're all pretty militarized, but when the Winchesters meet Metatron, they have a different experience.

Question 31

How did Rowena die?

Portrayed by Ruth Connell, Rowena MacLeod appeared in seasons 10-12. Born in Scotland during the 17th century, she was Crowley's mother, a witch, and everything from a mortal enemy to a frenemy of the Winchester brothers. She was brilliant, powerful and virtually impossible to defeat. Villain though she may have been, fans were sad to see her go - although her son was just bummed that he wasn't the one to kill her. How exactly did Rowena meet her end?

Question 32

Who tortures Dean in Hell?

Death, as we mentioned, doesn't tend to mean a whole lot on Supernatural (until they kill death and it's claimed that they don't get any redos from here on out). However, how people die and what happens to them afterwards can have profound consequences. Both Dean and John Winchester find themselves in Hell, tortured for decades. The goal was to break one of the seals on Lucifer's cage by having a Winchester turn on their fellow man. John doesn't break, but this demon is able to break Dean.

Question 33

Who created the Mark of Cain?

Mark_of_Cain Supernatural

The Mark was made to act as a seal to imprison the Darkness. You may remember that Cain transferred the Mark to Dean to help him defeat the powerful Knight of Hell, Abaddon. However, was it Cain who created the Mark? If not, who did? Unfortunately, the Mark acts as a corruptive force on anyone who wears it, a side effect that not even Dean managed to escape. It created such a thirst for violence within him, that he wound up a demon.

Question 34

How did the Winchesters attempt to seal the Gates of Hell?

As hunters, Sam and Dean understand the importance of sealing the gates of Hell better than most. In season 8, the prophet Kevin Tran discovers a way to close them for good via the demon tablet. Of course, it isn't easy and there is always a price. Also, this is Supernatural and the Gates of Hell closing for good would mean it was time for the Winchesters to close up shop. So, although they failed, what were Sam and Dean attempting to use to seal the gates shut?

Question 35

Which episode reveals Dean's deepest fear?

Jensen Ackles in as Dean in Supernatural

From the moment we meet Dean Winchester he seems completely fearless. However, this season 1 episode centered on the revelation that Dean is actually terrified of flying. He is reluctantly forced to face his fear when the brothers’ efforts to stop a demon are continually thwarted. Considering the threats that Sam and Dean face on a regular basis, the latter’s fright may seem strange. However, it does make sense, considering that this particular thing is so out of his control.
