Are You A Super Smash Bros Expert? Name The Fighters!

Super Smash Bros. is the quirkiest fighting game to ever be created, but it's also one of the most fun. It all began as a Nintendo hall of fame that included their heavy hitters like Pikachu, Mario, and Ness. However, as the series began expanding, we got to see several new characters join the roster. And many of them had never been heard of until the Smash Bros. series.

This trend has continued over the years, with many of the newer Smash Bros. games incorporating some of the most "off the wall" characters ever put into a Nintendo game. Many people who begin playing are going to look at the roster and scratch their heads at some of the fighters who made it in.

However, we have reason to believe that we could see even more crazy characters get put into the game if the rumored Super Smash Bros. for Switch is announced at E3 (perhaps by the time this quiz is published it will already have been announced. Who knows?). In honor of that, we've pulled some characters from across the entire Super Smash Bros. franchise to see if you could name them.

Are you familiar with these Smash Bros. fighters?

Question 1

Here we go!

Out of all of the clone characters introduced in the Smash Bros series, there was one that leaves us scratching our heads more than the rest, and that's this character. Introduced in Super Smash Bros Melee, there was a lot of negative feedback surrounding his inclusion in the game. However, he was not in Super Smash Bros Brawl, but for some reason was brought back in a new way when the Wii U and 3DS versions came out. No one saw it coming, to say the least.

Question 2

The seven seas await.

The Legend of Zelda series has always had an interesting track record when it comes to how it's been represented in Super Smash Bros. Many of the characters are variations on pre-existing ones, and there hasn't been a drastically different character since Zelda and Ganondorf were brought into Melee back in the day. This character actually replaced a spot that was previously held by another similar Zelda character. This version is better than its predecessor, but we can't help but wonder what a new Zelda representative would look like.

Question 3

Without a mask for some reason.

For a while, it seemed as if the Fire Emblem series would go down in flames. That was until Fire Emblem: Awakening came out on the 3DS. Because of how well it sold, Nintendo decided to not only continue the franchise but give it more representation in Super Smash Bros. This character was the first female Fire Emblem representative to make it into Smash Bros. She is a clone of Marth and was designed to be used by novice players.

Question 4

He busts his foes.

Nintendo has had a pretty good relationship with Square Enix for several years, and that led to some amazing results. One thing that happened was that the two companies made a deal for a Final Fantasy character to appear in Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS. When the fighter was finally announced, there was a lot of excitement as he heralds from one of the most popular games in the series. If any Final Fantasy character were going to make it in, it was always going to be this one.

Question 5

Show me your moves.

Part of what made Super Smash Bros so interesting was how Sakurai brought in characters who had never appeared in person and gave them a complete moveset that has since then defined the future of said characters. This particular fighter had never been outside of a racecar before Smash Bros. However, his appearance is iconic and he has one of the most trademarked moves in video game history. He was one of the original fighters and won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

Question 6

Robot action hero

Once Super Smash Bros included Sonic the Hedgehog, it opened up a world of possibilities for future installments. The series was no longer just about celebrating Nintendo; it was about celebrating video game history altogether. This is why Sakurai went above and beyond for the Wii U and 3DS versions. Other extremely iconic characters were included, and one of them was this robot here, otherwise known as the Blue Bomber. He uses a variety of attacks and abilities to get ahead in battle.

Question 7

End of Day

This fighter in the Smash Bros isn't brawling alone. He has little critters to battle alongside him, whether it be up close and personal or at a distance. He is a fairly used in fighter in the metagame because of this and is also one of the most difficult to battle against. His final smash involves him going into a rocket and crash landing on the battlefield, which sends any nearby fighters careening for the edge of the stage and to their deaths.

Question 8

You're not ready yet.

Throughout the Smash Bros series, limited memory and time have led to some characters being clones of others. That wasn't necessarily the case with Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS. There were characters planned to be alternate costumes who were then fleshed out enough to be their own fighters entirely. That was exactly the case with this playable character, who has been criticized for being a clone of another. That being said, we still love any excuse for new characters in Smash Bros.

Question 9

Robotic Buddy

Every Super Smash Bros game has at least one character who got in that nobody expected. Brawl's weird character proved to be a beloved addition to the game and many people were excited that he managed to get in. Yet, many others were left scratching their heads as they tried to discover which game he came from. The twist is that this character didn't really come from a particular game at all. His roots go very deep in Nintendo history.

Question 10

Two options

One of two final DLC characters released for Super Smash Bros on Wii U and 3DS, this particular fighter was used as cross-promotion for an upcoming title. This fighter had yet to appear in a game prior to their inclusion in Smash Bros. However, that didn't stop them from making a big impact. Using their lances and dragon abilities, not only were they able to dominate the competition, but conquer the metagame as well. You can choose either a boy or girl version.

Question 11

There's no way...

Of all of the strange characters that made it into Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS, such as the Wii Fit Trainer, this character easily takes the cake. Never before has he been a playable character in anything. He was simply a background character in a shooter game. However, Sakurai managed to create a new model and moveset for this fighter for Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS. He's not alone though; he has that cute little bird on his back.

Question 12

Play time's over.

Introduced in Super Smash Bros Brawl, this fighter had quite the interesting history regarding Nintendo. However, he hadn't appeared in a lot of games up until that point. Yet, he still served as one of the better villains in Smash Bros. Utilizing swift attacks and powerful hits, he managed to shake up the competition and leave opponents trembling in their boots. Sadly, he didn't make into Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS. We're still waiting for him to come back.

Question 13

You're a kid.

These particular characters made quite the impact when they were first introduced a few years ago. Since appearing in their own game, they have quickly become one of the more recognizable faces in Nintendo's roster, proving that the company can still make amazing and unique games if they put their minds to it. They utilize a slew of different weapons to damage their opponents, including grenades and devastating nukes. They also appeared in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as playable racers.

Question 14

Is that a boy or a girl?

What makes this character's inclusion in Smash Bros so interesting is that she only appeared in one game in the past. Most of the other fighters had appeared in multiple games before being considered for inclusion. Yet, this fighter has given a spot on the roster and has since then been a staple of the Smash Bros series. She has recently been made her own character as well, no longer being tied to a mere transformation for another fighter on the roster.

Question 15

It shocks itself.

As far as clone character go, there was one who was worse than all the rest. It had many of the same moves as the character it was copied from, but with one twist. True to Pokemon lore, this fighter would actually hurt itself when it used attacks and was significantly weaker than its inspiration. Because of this, it is often cited as the worst Smash Bros character to date and hasn't appeared in the series since Melee came out.

Question 16

Is that Mewtwo?

When this fighter was first announced, many people thought that it was a sign of Mewtwo coming back. However, things changed when it was revealed that it was a completely different Pokemon character instead. Despite this, there was a lot of excitement for this character to be included in the game, and it has since had a massive impact on the community. On top of using some water attacks, this Pokemon also uses swords, counters, and excellent dodges to win each battle.

Question 17

Victory is my destiny.

Anybody who played Super Smash Bros Brawl knows exactly who this character is because of how broken he was. Thankfully, he was heavily nerfed when he returned in Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS. However, he still uses many of the same abilities that he had at the beginning and can still deal a lot of damage very quickly if players know how to use him. On top of that, he has some of the coolest lines of dialogue in the series.

Question 18

It's showtime.

Believe it or not, third-party characters had been planned for Super Smash Bros all the way back when Melee was being developed for the Gamecube. However, it wasn't until Brawl came out that we actually got to see some get into the game. One said character was put into Brawl and has not been seen since. He employed a combination of tactical fighting and military equipment to get ahead in combat. His final smash saw him shooting grenades at other fighters.

Question 19

No limbs.

When Super Smash Bros for Wii U first came out there was a presentation that announced Mewtwo would be the first DLC character for the game. However, this led to a lot of speculation from everyone as to who else could come to the game through this route. Eventually, there were some leaks dropped that included particular characters. One such leak included this Ubisoft character in the character select screen. It produced a lot of shock on many sites but did have a twist at the end of it all.

Question 20

Stare of death

The Animal Crossing series had come out back on the Gamecube, and many people wondered why there was no rep from it in Super Smash Bros Brawl. Needless to say, it was long overdue when they finally brought in a character for Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS. This fighter uses a host of interesting moves, such as bowling balls, planting trees, and flower pots to dominate the competition. It also has a death stare that could make even Bowser scared.

Question 21

He's our boy!

This character was first introduced to the series in Super Smash Bros Melee. At the time, his game had yet to come out, so Sakurai put him in Smash Bros as a way to promote the upcoming release. However, he was later cut from Super Smash Bros Brawl and seemingly Wii U and 3DS. Thankfully, as Sakurai developed more DLC for the game, this sword fighter made his triumphant return to the series, complete with a full visual upgrade and final smash.

Question 22

A goddess.

The Kid Icarus series had been long dead after its only two entries came out on the NES and GameBoy. However, once Pit was included in Super Smash Bros Brawl, Sakurai went to work developing Kid Icarus Uprising for the Nintendo 3DS. After this, Nintendo had brought the franchise back from the dead, leaving room for more characters from it to be in the next Smash Bros game. At E3 2014, Nintendo announced this beautiful fighter would be in Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS.

Question 23

Happy Mother's Day.

When Sakurai was developing Super Smash Bros Brawl, he had plans to replace one character with this one. However, he eventually decided that it would be better if this fighter became his own character with a unique moveset and structure. Since then, he has become a fan favorite character, focusing more on power and utility over speed and good jumping power. He was another character who didn't initially make it into Smash Wii U/3DS but was later added as DLC.

Question 24

2D meets 3D

Melee's unexpected fighter came from an obscure part of Nintendo's history. The character is entirely 2D, despite being in a 3D space. All of his moves resemble an old arcade game, and he even walks as if he is limited by hardware restraints. Because of this, he quickly became one of the more charming characters in Super Smash Bros and has been included in every game in the series since Melee. His Amiibo also has 3 different poses to choose from.

Question 25

I'm really feeling it!

Because Smash Bros includes characters introduced in Japan, there are naturally going to be a few inclusions that don't make a lot of sense in the grand scheme of things. This is precisely the case with this fighter. Not many people knew who he was before he got into Smash, but either way, he's a fairly well-known character nowadays. Utilizing the Monado, he can change his stats depending on how the battle is progressing, and make sure that he always has the advantage.
