The beloved comic book characters of Marvel and D.C. are often brought to life in television, film, and other media. Each company has created a shared "universe" for their recent live action movies, meaning the characters and story lines all exist in the same timeline and often crossover with each other.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe, or the MCU as it is called, officially began in 2008. Marvel Studios created a series of solo films focusing on each of their superheroes and then created crossover hit The Avengers in 2012. The franchise proved to be a commercial and critical success. A second phase of movies, bringing new characters and story lines, started in 2013 and ended in 2015. The universe is currently in its third phase of films.
The D.C. Extended Universe, known as the DCEU, began in 2013. The most recent film is the crossover Justice League, featuring five of D.C.'s biggest heroes. There are several movies currently in development, including solo movies introducing characters that have yet to be seen as well as sequels and spin-offs.

Chato Santana, better known as El Diablo, has powerful pyrokinetic powers. He became involved in gang activity in Los Angeles and his meta-human abilities helped him rise through the ranks. But his powers ultimately ruin his life when he looses his temper and set his house on fire, accidentally killing his wife and children. After this, he voluntarily turned himself in to the authorities and swears to never use his powers ever. He redeems himself by sacrificing his life to save the world.
Margaret "Peggy" Carter was an agent of the Strategic Scientific Reserve. The SSR was a deep science agency of the Allied Powers, throughout and after the second World War. The SSR fought against the Nazis super weapons division, HYDRA. She was also a vital part of the SSR Project Rebirth. The project aimed to create an army of super soldiers. She helped hunt down every last remaining member of HYDRA and continued to serve the SSR after the war ended.
Drax the Destroyer
Drax the Destroyer is a a former intergalactic criminal who became a superhero. The evil villain Ronan the Accuser killed his wife and daughter. At first, seeking revenge, he goes on a rampage across the galaxy and ends up imprisoned. He eventually takes Ronan down. He is a strong warrior equipped with superhuman strength, durability, and agility. He is also an expert at combat and knife fighting. His species is completely literal and he is unable to understand metaphors or sarcasm.
Victor Stone was a promising football star whose career was ended after a horrible accident. His life was saved by alien technology that turned him into a cyborg. He gains enhanced strength, stamina, and durability as well as the ability to shape shift parts of his body, achieve flight with thrusters along his body, gain complete control of any computer system, make holographic projections of data, and repair parts of his body. He is also equipped with a plasma canon.
Steve Rogers attempted to sign up for military service during World War II but was continuously rejected due to his physical weakness. He was then selected for a secret government project that turned him into a super soldier. His intelligence, strength, speed, senses, durability, agility, stamina, dexterity and reflexes are all enhanced. On top of that, he has an accelerated healing factor and a shield made of a practically indestructible metal. Not only is he a super solider, he is known as the world's first superhero.
Doctor Isabel Maru, better known as Doctor Poison, is an evil and sadistic scientist. She worked to develop horrifying weapons of destruction for Germany during the first World War, including a lethal mustard gas. She does not seem to care about the political aspects of the war and is focused on how to kill as many people as possible in the most terrible ways. One of her experiments with gases left her with severe scars on her face, which she covers with flesh colored plates.
Ulton is an artificial intelligence program that was originally created to protect the Earth. However, he soon determines that humans themselves are the biggest threat to the world and vows to annihilate them. He is equipped with a genuis intellect that far surpasses any human. He is able to possess multiple host bodies and transfer his consciousness to any computer system. He can also generate superhuman strength, durability, and stamina, manipulate gravitational fields and shoot concussion beams from his hands.
Doomsday is a mutant creation. He is made from a dead alien body and the blood of a human. He has super strength, speed, stamina and is invulnerable. He also has an insatiable blood lust. This lethal combination makes him a force of pure death and demolition. He is so strong that even a team of the world's strongest heroes has trouble defeating him. The Speed Force gives him the power to move at superhuman speeds fast enough to break the sound barrier as well as an accelerated healing factor and enhanced reflexes, agility, momentum, and stamina. He also also vibrate his body through solid objects and even travel through time.
Nebula is a master assassin from the planet Luphom. As an alien, she has intelligence, strength, and durability far superior to any human. She has also enhanced her body with cybernetic implants. This allows her body to quickly heal and repair itself from injuries, no matter how severe. In addition, she received extensive training from her adopted father, a fearsome intergalactic warlord. She is skilled in armed and unarmed hand to hand combat and is an expert pilot and marksman.
Waylon Jones was born with a rare genetic mutation that caused his skin to look like a reptile's. He turned to crime at a young age and spent most of his youth in and out of prison. He later joined a traveling carnival and became a crocodile wrestler known for having cannibalistic tendencies. This earned him the nickname Killer Croc in the crime world. His reptilian skin is extremely durable. His mutation also gives him super strength and enhanced smell, hearing, and vision.
Thor is the God of Thunder. He resides in the realm of Asgard, which is home to powerful beings who keep peace throughout the galaxy. Asgardians have superhuman strength, lifespan, durability, speed, and agility. As the heir to the throne of Asgard, Thor is one of the strongest of them all. He has the power to lift Mjølnir, an Asgardian enchanted war-hammer forged in the heart of a dying star, to fly, to manipulate the weather, and to manipulate electricity.
Dr. Stephen Strange was once an accomplished neurosurgeon. After a car accident, his hands become crippled. He searches for a way to heal them and ends up finding the Masters of the Mystic Arts. He was trained to become a master sorcerer and becomes one of the strongest among them. He can magically create solid structures out of tangible energy. He also has the power to fly, teleport, travel through dimensions, manipulate time, and to separate his astral form from his body.
When Superman was born on the planet Krypton, it was on the verge of total destruction. His parents sent him to Earth so that he could survive, making him one of the last surviving members of the species. When he lands on Earth, he is adopted by humans. Since he was born on a planet with a red sun, the Earth's yellow sun gives him superhuman strength, durability, speed, and agility. He also has the power to fly and shoot heat beams out of his eyes.
Clint Barton is a master marksman and assassin. He specializes in archery, though he also uses a number of firearms. He has several types of bows and trick arrows. His incredible accuracy in shooting earns him the name Hawkeye. He is one of the top agents at The Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division, better known as S.H.I.E.L.D., an extra-governmental U.S. military counter-terrorism and intelligence agency. He teams up with Earth's mightiest heroes to defend the world from an alien invasion.
After Tatsu Yamashiro's husband and children are killed by her evil brother in law, she becomes a samurai vigilante under the alias Katana. She trains to become a master of martial arts and swordsmanship. She wields a mystical Japanese samurai katana sword that is known as the Soultaker. The powerful weapon will trap the soul of anyone she kills with it. Her husband was killed by his brother with the sword, so she is always carrying his soul with her.
Steppenwolf is a powerful being from the faraway planet of Apokolips. As the name suggests, the planet is horrible, evil and covered in burning fire-pits. It exists in a realm separate from Earth and its inhabitants are New Gods. Steppenwolf was once the leader of the planet's military. He was forced into exile after failing to conquer Earth. He returns 30,000 years later to try and take over the planet again and is once again defeated, but it takes a team of the world's strongest heroes.
Colonel James Rupert Rhodes is a jet pilot with the U.S. Air Force. In addition to being a trained pilot, he is an expert, tactician, martial artist, and marksman. He becomes the hero known as War Machine by using a high-tech, armored battle suit. The suit gives him the power to fly and gives him superhuman strength and agility. It is equipped with powerful assault weapons like a 7.62-mm minigun, a box rocket launcher, a sonic cannon, and repulsor beams.
Captain Steve Trevor was a United States Army Air Service officer that worked as a spy for England during the first World War. He is skilled at combat and a gifted leader. He gathered intelligence while working undercover in a Central Powers base located in the Ottoman Empire. He discovers the enemies terrible weapons and steals their plans. While escaping, he is shot down and lands on Themyscira, the home of the Amazons. He is the first man to ever set foot on the island.
Orin is the crown prince of the ocean kingdom Atlantis. On Earth, he is known as Arthur Curry and as the superhero Aquaman. He is half Atlantean and half human, so he has the unique ability to survive both underwater and on the surface world. He is gifted with superhuman strength, durability, reflexes, speed, and agility. He can also leap great distances as well as telepathically control marine life. He is armed with a mighty trident that can create powerful waves.
Thanos is a powerful warlord that rules over a far away area of the galaxy. His power and cruelty is feared throughout the universe. Some refer to him as the Dark Lord or the Mad Titan. He is in command of two massive alien armies and many other powerful subordinates to do his bidding. His goal is to obtain all of the Infinity Stones in the universe, which are powerful, cosmic objects, and become the most powerful being in the galaxy.

Natalia "Natasha" Romanoff is one of the most talented spies and deadliest assassins in the world, known under the alias Black Widow. She was originally trained as an agent for the Soviet agency the KGB. She later defects to the United States, joins an extra-governmental military counter-terrorism and intelligence agency, and becomes a hero. She is an expert in martial arts and armed combat. She carries an electroshock weapon known as Black Widow's Bite, electroshock batons, and several different firearms.
Bruce Wayne's parents were murdered before his eyes when he was a young child. This traumatic event inspires him to become a hero. By day, he is a billionaire philanthropist and business man. At night, he is the vigilante superhero known as Batman. Though he has no superhuman abilities, he is gifted with a genius level intellect, the best detective skills in the world, and several high tech weapons. He is also a master of several different forms of martial arts.
T'Challa is the leader of the African nation Wakanda. The ruler of the country also traditionally takes on the mantle of its super-powered protector Black Panther. After consuming an herb found only in Wakanda, Black Panther has enhanced strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility, and reflexes. He is a trained martial artist and acrobat, making him a powerful force to be reckoned with in battle. His combat suit is lined with a nearly indestructible metal which makes him impervious to many physical attacks.
General Zod is an alien war criminal. He caused a civil war on his home planet. He and his allies were all imprisoned in the Phantom Zone, a barren wasteland secluded in deep space. While he is in prison, his home planet is destroyed. He is freed and decides to recreate his world on Earth by destroying humanity. He has superhuman strength, durability, speed, hearing, sight and agility. He can also fly, use X-ray and heat vision, and has super breath.
Enchantress is an inter-dimensional magical being so powerful that she was once worshipped as a god by ancient civilizations. She was sealed away for thousands of years until she was discovered by the archeologist June Moone. Enchantress possess her body. Whenever June says "Enchantress," she is transformed into the witch. She can teleport incredibly long distances in a short amount of time. She can also read and control minds, create a magical weapon that emits destructive electrical energy, and even resurrect the dead.
Vision is an android created from an advanced artificial intelligence system created by one of the smartest scientists in the world and the immensely powerful cosmic object the Mind Stone. His body is a perfect hybrid between synthetic organic tissue and the nearly indestructible metal Vibranium. He has enhanced strength and durability and has the power to fly, fire energy beams, and shift his density so that he can phase through solid objects. He is dedicated to protecting humanity at all costs.
Johann Schmidt was the head of a special weapons division during Nazi Germany in World War II. He is a scientist and attempts to transform himself into the perfect super soldier. His experiment is partially successful and gives him superhuman strength, speed, stamina, reflexes, and intelligence. However, it also came with a side effect. The serum he injected himself with left him horrifically disfigured. His face becomes a bright, grotesque red color. He becomes known as Red Skull due to his deformity.
Wanda Maximoff, also known as the hero Scarlet Witch, was born in the war torn nation of Sokovia. She and her twin brother allowed themselves to be experimented on by the criminal organization HYDRA, hoping that they could help stop the suffering in their country. The experiments give her powerful superhuman abilities. She has the ability to project strong energy blasts, waves and bolts, fly, and move objects with her mind. She can also mentally manipulate people to hallucinate their biggest fears.
Nick Fury was a former officer of the US Army and an espionage veteran of the CIA during the Cold War. He later joins S.H.I.E.L.D., which stands for the Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division. S.H.I.E.L.D. is an covert agency of the U.S. military. It specializes in peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, and intelligence and is intended to serve as the Earth's first line of defense against exceptional threats. He quickly rises through the ranks of the agency and becomes its director.
Loki was born in the world Jotunheim, a cold, dark, and barren planet. The planet is inhabited by different types of primitive and war-like giants. Loki is a Frost Giant, but he is adopted by the king of Asgard, an enemy of Jotunheim, and raised as a prince. As a Frost Giant, he has strength, speed, agility, durability, stamina and reflexes that far surpass any human. In addition, he is trained in sorcery. He is called the God of Mischief for his deception and cunning behavior.
Hippolyta is the Queen of the female warrior race created by Zeus, the Amazons. The ruler of the gods created the soldiers after his evil son Ares, the god of war, began corrupting humans with anger and bloodlust. The Amazons were meant to counter his actions by spreading peace and love. Ares rages war against humanity and the other gods of Olympus. He captures the Amazons as slaves. Led by Hippolyta, they free themselves and defeat him. Hippolyta also has a demi god child with Zeus.
The Collector, real name Taneleer Tivan, collects relics, fauna, and alien species from various worlds and realms all over the galaxy. He is nearly as old as the universe itself and, over that time, accumulates the largest and most diverse collection in the galaxy. He keeps his prized possessions in a mining colony named Knowhere that is located inside the severed head of an ancient alien. The Collector has also obtained some of the most powerful weapons in the universe.
Lex Luthor is a multi-billionaire businessman and a highly skilled mathematician and scientist. He is the CEO of the company, LexCorp Industries, which was created by his father. He is believed to be one of the smartest people in the entire word. Unfortunately, Lex is also a greedy, power hunger, cunning, and egotistical super villain. Though he has no meta human powers, his genius level intellect makes him one of the most formidable criminals on Earth and he is able to hold his own against the strongest heroes.
Floyd Lawton is a mercenary and one of the deadliest assassins in the entire world. He is an especially skilled marksman and is known as Deadshot for almost never missing his target. The former member of the US Special Forces is skilled with weapons such as 9 mm pistols, revolvers, machine guns, assault rifles, flamethrowers, sniper rifles, anti-tank rifles, shotguns, M1 carbines, Bazookas, Derringers, Uzis, grenade launchers, .44 magnums, and muskets. It is said that he is lethal at 4 kilometers.
Sam Wilson is a former pararescue airman in the United States Air Force. He becomes the superhero known as Falcon using a specialized military jetpack with wings. The jetpack allows him to move faster than a jet and also enhances his maneuverability and agility. He wears goggles that give him enhanced vision. He can see things that are too far away or small for the naked eye. The jetpack is also equipped with weapons like machine pistols in the holsters, a wrist-mounted machine gun, and a miniature rocket launcher.
Lois Lane is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the Daily Planet, one of the most famous and respected newspapers in the country. The paper operates out of the city of Metropolis, the home of the alien hero Superman. She reports on Superman frequently and is secretly romantically involved with him. She is known for being observant, perceptive, brave, and persistent in pursuing the truth, but some also think that she goes too far and puts herself in very dangerous situations.
Doctor Bruce Banner is a scientist known for his work in the fields of biochemistry and nuclear physics. He specifically specializes in gamma radiation. His exposure to the radiation leaves him with a peculiar condition. Whenever he gets exceptionally angry, the mild mannered man is transformed into a giant, green, muscular creature with unlimited strength named the Hulk. His intelligence is repressed in this form and is driven by pure rage. However, Banner eventually learns to control the monster and becomes a hero.
Captain Boomerang, whose real name is George "Digger" Harkness, is one of the deadliest robbers in the entire world. He is a master at throwing bladed boomerangs and is known for adding extra tricks and gimmicks to them, such as making them explode or adding a camera to them to surveil the area. On top of his boomerang skills, he is also a strong hand-to-hand and armed combatant. He is said to be mentally deranged, but is actually quite cunning.
Scott Edward Harris Lang is a former thief who changes his ways and becomes the second person to take on the mantle of the superhero Ant-Man. He uses a suit that can manipulate the size of his body. He can become as small as an ant. When his body is compressed, he becomes stronger and can punch with the force of a bullet. He also has the ability to control the minds of insects using radio and electric waves and signals.
Antiope was one of the fiercest fighters of the Amazon warrior race. She is the sister of the queen of the Amazons and also serves as the general of the female warriors. She leads and trains the Amazon army to prepare for the return of the Olympian god of war, Ares. Antiope is known for her bravery in battle. She has superhuman strength, stamina, durability, and agility. She was killed when the first humans invaded the Amazon's hidden island Themyscira.
Dr. Abraham Erskine was a German scientist during the second World War. He is the creator of the original serum that created super soldiers. After he was forced to create a version for the Germans, he defects and flees to America. He begins working for the Allied Powers and perfects his serum. He is only able to create one super soldier for the Allies before he is assassinated. The most gifted scientists have been trying to replicate his formula for decades.
Faora-Ul is an alien war criminal. She was part of an organization that attempted to usurp control of her home planet's government. When the movement failed, she was imprisoned in the Phantom Zone - a prison located in subspace. While the members of the organization are in prison, their home planet is destroyed. They escape from the Phantom Zone and attempt to create an apocalypse on the planet Earth so they can transform it into a new version of their planet. She, along with her teammates, are defeated and reimprisoned.
Lady Sif is a powerful warrior from the realm of Asgard. She is known as one of the fiercest fighters in the universe and has defeated many powerful beings across the realms. As a member of the Asgardian race, she is gifted with superman strength, stamina, speed, durability and reflexes as well as an enhanced healing factor and a much longer life span. She is a master at wielding her double edged sword and is also trained in unarmed combat.
Mera is a powerful warrior and sorceress from the underwater realm of Atlantis. She has the power to breathe underwater, to swim quickly, and to see clearly in the darkest depths of the ocean. She has hydrokinesis, meaning that she can manipulate water at her will, and can telepathically control sea-life to come to her aid during battle. She is also gifted with superman strength, durability, and speed. She is a frequent ally of the prince, and eventual king, of Atlantis.
Sir Patrick Morgan/Ares
Sir Patrick Morgan of Britain's War Council constantly advocated for peace during World War I, but his words fell on deaf ears. In reality, Morgan is Ares - the fearsome Olympian god of war. Ares initiated a war with the other gods of Olympus and eventually destroys them all. But he is forced to retreat for a few centuries afterwards. His goal is to destroy humanity by influencing them to create terrible weapons and wage wars against each other. He does not force anyone to do anything and believes humans are inherently bad.
James "Bucky" Barnes
James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes was a sergeant in the army during World War II. He fell off the side of a train during a mission and was presumed deceased for decades. In reality, he was captured as a prisoner of war and used in an experiment that attempted to recreate the Allies super solider project. The experiments give him superhuman strength, speed, and durability. His left arm is also replaced by a bionic attachment. He becomes known as The Winter Solider.
