Unlike other TV shows, American Horror Story does not continue with the same storyline season after season. It's an anthology series and each season is styled as a self-contained mini-series. This means that each season has a different setting and new set of characters, although some characters have made cross-over appearances. Each storyline has its own beginning, middle, and end and some of the elements of the storytelling are loosely based on true crime events.
The only two actors to appear in every season of the show so far are Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters. Other actors who have made numerous appearances include Lily Rabe, Denis O'Hare, Kathy Bates, Jessica Lange, Frances Conroy, Angela Basset, and Mare Winningham. The show has also attracted guest stars such as Naomi Campbell, Stevie Nicks, Matt Bomer, and Neil Patrick Harris.
The colorful (and sometimes twisted) characters of American Horror Story make the show. Sometimes we love to love them and sometimes we love to hate them, but without them, there would be no show to enjoy. Today we want you to rate these characters and based on your choices we'll guess your favorite season of AHS. Let's see if we can get it right!
Rate this character: Tate Langdon
In the very first season of AHS, Evan Peters played the role of Tate Langdon, the ghost of a teenage school shooter who was killed by a SWAT team. He starts out as Dr. Harmon's patient but then falls in love with his daughter Violet.

For her last season on AHS Jessica Lange played the role of Elsa Mars, an amputee with her eyes firmly set on stardom. She is the owner of one of the last remaining freak shows and a collector of strange and interesting people.

Lily Rabe pulled out all the stops to wow audiences with her portrayal as Sister Mary Eunice in Asylum; a sweet nun who becomes possessed by the Devil. Watching her turn up the heat on Sister Jude after years of torment was nothing short of addictive!

Did you know that the character James Patrick March (portrayed by Evan Peters in Hotel) was actually based on the real-life serial killer H.H Holmes? Holmes, like March, also hid the bodies of his victims in a hotel.

Adina Porter first appeared in AHS back in season one when she played Sally Freeman, one of Dr. Harmon's patients. But it was her role as Lee Harris in Roanoke that really got fans to sit up and take notice of her.

In season three of American Horror Story Jessica Lange played Fiona Goode, mother of Cordelia Foxx and Supreme of the coven of the Salem descendants. She had the power to drain the life out of her victims but hated that nothing would stop her from aging.

The latest season of AHS, Cult, introduced many new cast members including Billie Lourd. Lourd, who is the daughter of legendary Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher, played the role of Winter Anderson, the sister of Kai Anderson, a deranged cult leader.

Cult leaders often try to recruit people who are unhappy with their lives and in AHS: Cult, Harrison Wilton was the perfect victim. Stuck in a loveless marriage and miserable in a dead-end job he was almost too easy for Kai to convert.

In Roanoke, Kathy Bates plays the role of Agnes Mary Winstead, an actress hired to portray The Butcher in the mockumentary My Roanoke Nightmare. But Agnes is unstable and the further she gets into her role the crazier she becomes.

For season five of AHS, Hotel, Lady Gaga took the lead as Elizabeth Johnson AKA The Countess. She inherited the Hotel Cortez when her husband, James March, killed himself but years later she's forced to sell after she loses all her money in a Ponzi scheme.

When Vivien Harmon discovered her husband was having an affair she was so distraught that she suffered a miscarriage. She didn't leave him though, but she did insist that they relocate to a new city for a fresh start. And that's how they ended up in the Murder House.

Queenie is a ward at Miss Robichaux's Academy who shares blood with both the Salem witches and the voodoo tribe. She is portrayed by Gabourey Sidibe in Coven. She reappeared again in season five as a guest at the Hotel Cortez.

Twisty is easily one of the scariest characters to come out of American Horror Story. Played by John Carroll Lynch, this psycho clown first appeared in Freak Show and then again in Cult; this time as a comic book creation.

In season three of AHS, Frances Conroy took on the role of Myrtle Snow, the head of the Witches' Council and Fiona Goode's rival. This was Conroy's third appearance in the show, she played Moira in Murder House and the Angel of Death in Asylum prior to this.

Iris decided to stay on and work at the Cortez after her son died from an overdose in one of the rooms but was saved by The Countess. Iris is one of five characters that Kathy Bates has played so far.
