Accept Or Reject These Trades And We'll Tell You If You'd Make A Good MLB GM

Another baseball season has come and gone with the Houston Astros winning the 2017 World Series in an exciting 7-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers. With a champion crowned for the year, the offseason has officially begun with 29 teams having their eyes on Houston's prize, and the Astros doubtlessly unwilling to give it up just yet.

This offseason stands to be an interesting one, particularly given the fact that the Miami Marlins' new ownership group appears intent on trading several of their high-priced players, including 59-homer franchise player and newly-crowned NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton. Yet, despite his monstrous year, Stanton's equally monstrous contract has many analysts predicting that the Marlins won't be able to take home nearly as big of a haul for the slugger as might otherwise be expected.

That case exemplifies the fact that there's far more to trades than just a player's stats, as their contract status is nearly of equal importance. In this quiz, we're going to test just how well you could manage a team, balancing player ability with contract value. We'll present you with 35 different trade offers, which you can either accept or decline. Simply judge the trade on its own merits (don't factor in what teams the players are on and what those teams' needs are -- we aren't going that deep), and decide if it's a good trade or not. When you're done, we'll rate your choices and tell you whether you'd make a good GM or a bad one.

So, think you have what it takes to run a Major League Baseball team? Take the quiz and find out!

Question 1

Would You Trade Josh Donaldson for Alex Reyes, Jack Flaherty, and Jedd Gyorko?

Rumors abound that the Cardinals will target a Donaldson trade this offseason, with Donaldson in his final arbitration year before free agency. The speculative package of players that could head north of the border in return for the 2015 AL MVP often includes top Cardinals prospect Alex Reyes, as well as Jedd Gyorko, who could replace JD at Rogers Centre.

Question 2

Would You Trade Giancarlo Stanton for Jordan Montgomery, Greg Bird, and Gleyber Torres?

The Yankees aren't seen as a likely pursuer of Stanton, but we've put together a hypothetical package that would probably be good enough to land him; in fact, the Marlins may wish they could get an offer this good. But is it really enough for the NL MVP? You decide!

Question 3

Would You Trade Noah Syndergaard for Mookie Betts?

Two of the game's premier young players, at wildly different, but equally vital positions, make for an interesting debate. The big drag on Thor's stock right now is that he's coming off of an injury-plagued season, but if healthy, he has the potential to become THE dominant pitcher in the game this year. He also comes with one extra year of team control than Betts, who hasn't delivered less than 6 WAR in any of the last 3 seasons.

Question 4

Would You Trade Trea Turner for Chris Archer?

Chris Archer's name is floating around a lot in trade rumors despite having a reasonable contract for 4 more years, reasonable even by Tampa Bay's standards. While there's no way they would get young shortstop Trea Turner for him, we'll leave it up to you to decide whether or not that would be a good deal.

Question 5

Would You Trade Anthony Rizzo for Roberto Osuna and Bo Bichette?

Bichette is coming off a monster year in the minors, slashing .362/.423/.565, with 59 extra-base hits and 22 stolen bases. Osuna had a disastrous stretch at the end of the year but ended the season with a ridiculous 1.74 FIP. Is that enough for Rizzo, who has 4 years of cheap team control left?

Question 6

Would You Trade Kevin Kiermaier for Domingo Santana and Josh Hader?

Kiermaier is another Ray that's been rumored as possible trade bait, with the Rays reportedly considering a full-blown rebuild. Is getting the younger Domingo Santana, who slugged 30 homers last season, along with prospect Josh Hader, enough for the perennial Gold Glove contender, who likely would've had 7-WAR seasons in each of the last 3 years if not for injuries?

Question 7

Would You Trade Rougned Odor for Ian Kinsler and Daniel Norris?

Odor is coming off a disastrous season, hitting .204 with 162 strikeouts, though he did club 30 home runs for the second straight year. He has a lot of cheap team control left, while Kinsler is on the final year of his deal and is also coming off a disappointing season. Norris is an intriguing young pitcher with flashes of brilliance.

Question 8

Would You Trade Danny Salazar for Manny Machado?

Machado is on the final year of his contract and will almost certainly not be re-signed by Baltimore, so he's a possible trade candidate this season. He's coming off a disappointing season by his standards, with just a .782 OPS. Salazar didn't have a great 2017 either but is an exciting young pitcher with 3 years of team control left.

Question 9

Would You Trade Marcell Ozuna for Mike Zunino and Dan Vogelbach?

Though he's much cheaper than Stanton, Ozuna could also be moved by Derek Jeter & Co. this offseason. Would they be wise to accept a deal for Mariners catcher Mike Zunino, who comes with an extra year of arbitration control, along with slugging prospect Dan Vogelbach?

Question 10

Would You Trade Andrew McCutchen for Mike Foltynewicz?

With McCutchen having posted a rebound year (though not quite to the heights of his former lofty standards), he should be worth enough for the Pirates to consider moving this year their longtime star who's in the final season of his contract. Mike Foltynewicz wouldn't be a splashy return, but a reliable back-end starter with several years of team control shouldn't be scoffed at (so quit scoffing).

Question 11

Would You Trade Michael Conforto for Mike Trout and Albert Pujols?

Getting the best player in the world should be a slam-dunk win for any trade, but is it actually if he comes saddled with Albert Pujols? Not only is Pujols owed over $100 million still, but he's now providing negative value on the field. And Trout only has 3 years left on his deal to make up for all of that lost value from Pujols. Meanwhile, Conforto is coming off a great season and is still pre-arb.

Question 12

Would You Trade Joey Votto for Yuli Gurriel and Alex Bregman?

Votto maintains that he hopes to remain in Cincinnati as trade rumblings continue to swirl around him thanks to Cincinnati being in perennial rebuild mode. Getting Bregman and Gurriel would be a huge score, but is it enough for Votto? That largely depends on how many elite seasons you believe Votto has left in him at 34 years of age now. He's coming off another pretty ridiculous season, walking 134 times to just 83 strikeouts and smacking 36 homers.

Question 13

Would You Trade Ervin Santana for Yasmani Grandal?

Santana is coming off one of his best seasons, leading the league with 5 complete games and 3 shutouts and posting a 16-8 record. However, he also gave up 31 bombs, which bloated his FIP to more than a full run above his 3.28 ERA. Grandal is one of the best-hitting catchers in the league, crushing 22 homers, though he only has 1 year of arb left.

Question 14

Would You Trade DJ LeMahieu for Ben Lively?

LeMahieu had another strong season, though he couldn't match his unreal 2016, when we won the NL batting title with a .348 average. With just one year of team control left, he could be moved at the deadline if the Rockies fall out of contention. Is Lively enough of a return for a year of LeMahieu?

Question 15

Would You Trade Jose Abreu for Matt Olson and Blake Treinen?

Abreu is another player who's been rumored to be on the block, with the White Sox rebuild not really lining up with his contract status (2 years of arb left). Olson, who just had a big enough debut that the A's moved Ryon Healy for a relief pitcher, would be an interesting return for Abreu when paired with Blake Treinen, though is it enough?

Question 16

Would You Trade A.J. Pollock for Didi Gregorius?

Pollock had a successful return last season after missing nearly all of 2016 due to injury, though he wasn't able to reproduce his career year of 2015. Gregorius is coming off a career-year of his own and comes with an extra year of team control. Is giving up Pollock's higher ceiling worth the extra year of Didi?

Question 17

Would You Trade Jake Marisnick for Joe Panik?

Marisnick finally got into the swing of things last year, producing an .815 OPS, though his defensive metrics declined to wipe out some of the offensive gains. Nonetheless, he has 3 years of team control left to try and put it all together. The steady Panik also has 3 years of control left and is also coming off a year where his offense ticked up at the expense of his defense.

Question 18

Would You Trade Jose Ramirez for Byron Buxton and Max Kepler?

Ramirez is coming off a phenomenal season that included 91 extra-base hits, a .957 OPS, and strong defense. He's under contract at a bargain rate for the next 6 years, making him one of the most valuable commodities in baseball. Are young Twins outfielders Byron Buxton and Max Kepler, both looking like stars, enough of a return?

Question 19

Would You Trade Antonio Senzatela for Jorge Bonifacio?

Senzatela and Bonifacio are both coming off solid rookie seasons, with Bonifacio hitting 17 home runs and Senzatela winning 10 of 15 decisions. However, defensive metrics weren't a big fan of Bonifacio's work in right field, while Senzatela's peripherals weren't stellar either. Would you keep the safer player in Senzatela or bet big on Bonifacio?

Question 20

Would You Trade Jason Heyward for Ian Desmond and Kyle Freeland?

Heyward's huge contract is often cited as the case where GMs gave in to the advanced stats revolution, doling out big bucks for the darling of defensive metrics. However, Heyward has forgotten how to hit since turning traitor and going to the Cubs, posting a measly .669 OPS. The Desmond contract looks even worse at the moment, which is why we're throwing in Kyle Freeland to soften the blow. Is it enough?

Question 21

Would You Trade Yasiel Puig for Jean Segura?

After a couple of dismal seasons, Yasiel Puig rebounded with a great showing in 2017, hitting a career-high 28 homers. While a much less dynamic (and volatile) player, Segura comes with an extra 3 years of team control. His first season in Seattle was a good one, as though his numbers were down from his huge 2016, that was partly due to the move to a pitcher-friendly home stadium from a hitter-friendly one.

Question 22

Would You Trade Luis Severino for Corey Seager?

Severino looks like the ace the Yankees had envisioned him to be after an impressive 2017 in which he struck out 230 to go along with a 2.98 ERA. Seager is coming off another outstanding season, hitting .295 with 22 homers while playing outstanding defense. He comes with one less year of team control than Severino.

Question 23

Would You Trade Taijuan Walker for Justin Smoak and Marco Estrada?

Walker is coming off a solid season and has 3 years of team control left. Smoak and Estrada each have one year left on their deals, with Smoak finally having the breakout season that had been predicted for him for years, smashing 38 homers and having the best plate discipline of his career.

Question 24

Would You Trade Wil Myers for Adam Jones and Mychal Givens?

Myers has delivered a couple solid seasons in San Diego but has yet to break into superstar status for the Padres, who gave up Trea Turner in the 3-team deal that landed him. Myers does have 6 years of team control left, though his contract doesn't leave much room for surplus value unless his game takes another step forward. Jones has just one year left on his contract, while Givens has 5 years of team control remaining.

Question 25

Would You Trade Adam Eaton for Brandon Belt and Chris Shaw?

The Adam Eaton trade is one that raised some eyebrows last year, with many believing that Washington had overpaid for him. With Eaton not having the same value now after injuries stole most of his 2017, we want to see how you value Eaton in this trade for Brandon Belt and Chris Shaw.

Question 26

Would You Trade Gerrit Cole for Elvis Andrus?

Andrus took his resurgence of last year to new heights in 2016, setting career highs in multiple offensive categories. Another big season or two could lead him to opt out of his contract with the Rangers, which he'll be able to do after each of the next two seasons. Given that risk, would it be worth losing 2 years of Gerrit Cole?

Question 27

Would You Trade Mike Trout for Aaron Altherr, Aaron Nola, and Rhys Hoskins?

We saddled Trout with Pujols in an earlier trade, but now, we want to see how you value him alone. For 3 years of the best player in baseball, we've lined up three young Phillies studs in Aaron Altherr, Aaron Nola, and Rhys Hoskins, the latter absolutely blitzing MLB pitching at the end of last year.

Question 28

Would You Trade Sonny Gray for Dallas Keuchel and Chris Devenski?

Dallas Keuchel would be a solid upgrade over Sonny Gray in any team's rotation; however, Keuchel is on the final year of his contract, while Gray has three years remaining. To bridge the gap, we've tossed in relief pitcher Chris Devenski, who was hit hard in the playoffs but has otherwise been a dreaded staple of Houston's bullpen.

Question 29

Would You Trade David Price for Matt Carpenter?

Price can opt out of his contract after next season, which adds an interesting wrinkle to his trade value. There's $127 million left on his deal after the season, which he's unlikely to get in free agency unless he has a very good (and very healthy) year. Carpenter has 3 years of team control left at a $47 million price tag, with a team option accounting for the final year.

Question 30

Would You Trade Eric Thames for Kole Calhoun?

Thames returned to the MLB last season after demolishing Korea and pretty much proceeding to demolish MLB. While he couldn't maintain his incredible start to the season, it was nevertheless a great return to the Majors for Thames, who slugged 31 homers and is signed for 3 more years on a cheap deal. Calhoun also has 3 years left on his deal, though at double the price.

Question 31

Would You Trade Delino DeShields for Billy Hamilton?

It's a trade of speedsters, as we offer Billy Hamilton for Delino DeShields. The former DeShields Jr. had his best season in 2017, getting on base at a healthy clip again and playing better outfield defense. Hamilton plays great defense and has incredible speed but hasn't mastered that whole getting-on-base thing.

Question 32

Would You Trade Avisail Garcia for Ender Inciarte?

Inciarte was part of one of the most lopsided trades in recent memory, going to the Braves along with Dansby Swanson and Aaron Blair in a deal for Shelby Miller. Inciarte, who arguably had as much, if not more value than Miller on his own, is still under contract for 5 more years at a bargain price. Garcia is coming off a massive breakout season, hitting .330, but has just two years of control left.

Question 33

Would You Trade Miguel Cabrera for Alex Gordon and Whit Merrifield?

Miggy's trade value just collapsed after a shockingly bad season, so it's tough to say where exactly it sits right now. If he doesn't turn it around, the $184 million of guaranteed money left on his contract will be a huge sunk cost. Thankfully for the Royals, Gordon, who started with the shockingly bad play a year earlier than Miggy, has just two guaranteed years left on his deal.

Question 34

Would You Trade Mitch Haniger for Steven Souza?

Haniger had an outstanding sophomore season in Seattle after coming over in the Taijuan Walker trade, as he slashed .282/.352/.491. He also offers two more years of team control than Souza, who had an outstanding season of his own, swatting 30 homers and actually cutting down on his strikeout rate (he still struck out 179 times though).

Question 35

Would You Trade Pablo Sandoval for a Cracked Batting Helmet and 2 Tickets to Les Misérables?

Even coming back to San Francisco on a cheap deal couldn't turn around the floundering fortunes of Pablo Sandoval, who hit about as badly by the Bay as he had in Beantown. Even with just $545,000 owed to him next season, would you not be better off with the tickets and that nice helmet?
