See If You Know "What She Said" With This Michael Scott Trivia

1.7K Shares

Have you ever heard a questionably vague turn of phrase and found yourself replying with an excited scream of, “That’s what she said!”? If so, chances are you’ve seen an episode or two of The Office, and are thus well aware this is the favorite joke of one Michael Gary Scott. The Regional Manager of this particular merry band of idiots/coworkers, Michael is usually the one putting his foot in his own mouth, so when he hears someone else make a silly statement, he’s quick to point it out. Of course, half the time Michael claims “she said” something, he’s commenting on his own words, but that’s part of his charm.

Initially somewhat of a jerk no one would ever want to work for, over seven seasons, Michael turns into a highly emotional character most fans were seriously hoping would finally find love. Unfortunately, by finding that love, he decided to leave Pennsylvania and his position, leaving two more seasons of The Office rife with diminishing returns. Worse than that, there were far fewer jokes about “what she said,” with Michael’s absence creating a terrible hole in the show’s humor. On the bright side, we’ll always have the memories, so if you think you know everything there is to know about The Office’s boss, Michael Scott, take our quiz to prove it.

Question 1

Which paper company does Micheal work for?

Before The Office TV show began, Michael Scott was a lowly sales agent working his way up the ladder at a local paper company. When the series begins, Michael is the head honcho of his crew, serving as the Regional Manager of the Scranton branch. This doesn’t mean a simple guy like Michael is really in charge, however, as he’s merely a mid-level executive for a massive conglomerate. In many respects, Michael isn’t the most important character on his own show, second to the company he works for itself.

Question 2

Who is Michael’s original receptionist?

Although there are countless executives ranking above him, Michael is nonetheless a big enough deal to hold the lives of a dozen employees in his hands. The good news is that he doesn’t see them as workers, but rather friends, and in that sense, his secretary may just be his closest confidant. Sure, he likes some other office members more, yet none give him the same attention and care his administrative assistant comes to realize he needs. Though this person decided they needed to spread their wings and try out some other jobs, who starts the show as Michael’s secretary?

Question 3

Which employee does Michael consider the hottest person in the office?

Never one to fully comprehend social niceties, Michael has a way of giving out “compliments” that come closer to harassment. Virtually the entire office has been victim to this in some way, and that goes to males and females. For whatever reason, Michael sees nothing wrong with telling his subordinates how sexy he finds them, rarely facing much retribution over the fact. Not even his yearly “Hottest In The Office” award raises a stir, despite the fact he keeps giving it to the same employee.

Question 4

Who does Michael hate more than anyone else?

All right, so Michael loves his office like they’re his immediately family or closest friends…but doesn’t everyone have that one friend they hate? Well, maybe not. Michael Scott certainly does, though, and it’s largely because this employee is deceptively more powerful than the Regional Manager. As the human resources representative, this person technically doesn’t even work for Michael, but rather Dunder Mifflin’s corporate offices, which makes it that much easier for his boss to call him the worst human being ever to live and get away with it.

Question 5

For what curable disease does Michael host a charity fun run?

Rocking out to Lady Gaga and talking to the camera are just two of the things distracting Michael from the road as he drove his car directly into Meredith Palmer, shattering her hip. There’s no way to look at this as anything other than being completely Michael’s fault, so he naturally spends most of the time trying to explain how it wasn’t…until he learns Meredith’s life may have been ironically saved in the process, at which point he decides it was heroism all along. To keep that altruistic trend going, Michael creates a charity raising money for the already cured disease Meredith discovered she had.

Question 6

What award ceremony does Michael host for his staff once a year?

Speaking of that “Hottest in the Office” award, this is hardly the only achievement Michael regularly bestows upon his employees. In fact, always a man of the people, Michael hosts a yearly ceremony of his own creation, rewarding the employees of Dunder Mifflin Scranton in his unique way. Some awards are more insulting than appreciative, like Kevin’s “Don’t Go In There” award in reference to his bathroom usage. That said, we’ve never seen Pam happier than when she won “Whitest Sneakers,” so there’s definitely a method to all the madness.

Question 7

Who ran the office before Michael?

No one starts out at the top, and obviously that applies to mid-level managers like Michael Scott. Heck, starting at the middle is just as hard, and that’s why Michael had to begin at the very bottom of the totem pole like anyone else. Never showing particular ambition, Michael probably had no idea he would one day be taking the same job held by the man who hired him. On the downside, when Michael’s old boss dies a particularly absurd death not long after retiring, he naturally assumes their lives will continue to mimic one another and faces an existential crisis.

Question 8

What charity organization did Michael start to help poor kids?

“Hey, Mr. Scott, whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do make our dreams come true?” So rang the rallying cry that inspired Michael to do one of the most unintentionally cruel and horrifically stupid things ever committed by a character on network television. Visiting a group of disadvantaged children early in his career, Michael made the impossible promise to pay for all of their college educations, thinking he’s probably be a millionaire by the time he had to actually go through with it. When that time comes, Michael still has trouble paying the mortgage, leaving him alone in a room with furious teens.

Question 9

Which of Michael’s employees begs to be Assistant (to the) Regional Manager?

One might think all a Regional Manager needs to keep their affairs in order is one secretary, and indeed, Pam Beesley does a great job of keeping Michael on task most of the time. However, there’s another employee at Dunder Mifflin who stands as a living embodiment of kissing ass and being subservient, and this person simply will not put up with Pam’s constant maleficence (let alone that of her running buddy, Jim Halpert). To fix this problem, he begs Michael to become Assistant Regional Manager, a title Michael allows albeit it with a slight tweak that undercuts all their power.

Question 10

What high ranking Dunder Mifflin exec does Michael date?

By and large, Michael Scott’s employees accept his absurdity can’t be stopped, simply doing the best they can to get around it. The idea of an employee developing romantic feelings for Michael is almost laughable, yet this hardly means the man is unlovable in general. Strangely enough, flip the script to make Michael the subordinate role, and he might actually be rather attractive to his higher ups…at least when he’s doing his job well. That’s probably only the case about a quarter of the time at best, and yet it’s still enough for a certain Vice President of Northeast Sales.

Question 11

What sport does Michael force his staff to play with him in the warehouse?

According to Michael, his office isn’t a place for work, but a magical dream land where dreams come true. Okay, so we added the “magical dream land” part, yet this is nonetheless entirely in line with how he views his place of work. Case in point, one day, Michael decides there’s nothing wrong with closing up shop for a few hours to play sports with the warehouse. Because he’s Michael, a huge wager is also placed on the game, causing his employees to play the hardest they ever have at a sport they had no interest in at the beginning.

Question 12

Where does Michael take Jan for their Christmas vacation?

What kind of a man steals a woman’s family photo, replaces her ex-husband’s face with his, and then sends it out to all their friends as a Christmas card? The same kind of guy who buys that same woman tickets to a tropical island resort for that same holiday. Turns out, however, that what Michael Scott did to Carol Stills was the sort of irreconcilable differences that ended their relationship for good. Rather than dwell on the breakup, Michael starts a desperate search for a woman willing to go with him, finding love in the most unexpected place.

Question 13

On what household item does Michael burn his foot?

For all the many mistakes Michael makes throughout his life, the most absurd incident he gets himself into is probably the day he severely burned his foot mere moments after getting out of bed in the morning. That said, given the way Michael describes things, its amazing this moment didn’t come years earlier. Apparently, the man enjoys the smell of breakfast in the morning, and to him that includes specifically prepared foods with one of his favorite As Seen On TV products. Of course, he probably shouldn’t have put the thing so close to him, nor on the floor at all.

Question 14

What kind of model is Michael’s imaginary rebound after Jan?

After breaking up with Jan, Michael finds the absence of a woman’s regular presence in his life makes him seriously depressed. As he explains to Jim, it’s not about the horniness, it’s the loneliness. Given his past behavior, however, one can hardly blame his employees for taking it as a joke when Michael demands they supply him with the name and number of an available woman. Pam’s landlady is sweet, but not right for Michael, and Kevin thinks he should date Wendy’s, the fast food joint. Dwight understands what Michael really wants, seeking out the magazine model his boss called his dream woman.

Question 15

Who leaves a disgusting mess on Michael’s carpet?

One of Michael Scott’s most lofty goals is to make people the people of Dunder Mifflin afraid of how much they like him. Given his social tendencies, however, almost the exact opposite becomes reality. Because of this, Michael once had the unfortunate experience of walking into an office that smelled so bad it was actively painful for the entire staff…except Creed, who thought it was soup. Turns out it wasn’t soup nor even an act of hatred, but rather a cruel “prank” performed by one of Michael’s few true friends.

Question 16

Who ruins Michael’s birthday by suffering a cancer scare?

To some people, their birthday is the single most important day of the year, and it should be no surprise that Michael Scott is one of them. Each and every year, when March 15 rolls around, the Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch is in for one heck of a party—and these people know their parties. Not trusting the Party Planning Committee on this one, Michael largely puts together his own celebration, ending in a bombastic trip to an ice rink where he can show off his skating skills. Unfortunately, one of his employees might have skin cancer, putting a huge damper on the affair.

Question 17

Which rock star does Michael auction tickets for after the office gets robbed?

Turns out Michael’s real dream woman had been Holly Flax all along, who he meets as the new HR representative in late season four. By season five, the two are ready to start dating, consummating their relationship for the first time in “Crime Aid.” The act wasn’t quite perfect, however, taking place in the stairwell of Dunder Mifflin’s building. Worse than that, the duo forgets to lock the doors after they left, leaving the place susceptible to thousands of dollars worth of theft. To make up for it, Michael holds an auction and offers the best item of the night.

Question 18

With which celebrity does Michael share his birthday?

Despite the horrors experienced by Kevin, there were still plenty of upsides to Michael’s birthday. There was the hockey, Carol and her kids stopped by and had a good time, and for some reason, Dwight lead the office in lifting Michael’s chair like he was in a Hora dance. Better than any of that, however, is a certain realization Michael had about his birthday, presumably years earlier. Turns out, he has the same birthday as a certain celebrity who has a co-star Michael would love to meet, and he naturally believes this to be a perfect ice breaker.

Question 19

At which singer’s concert did Michael think he accidentally smoked marijuana?

Accurately describing his coworker, Jim Halpert claims that Dwight Schrute finding drugs is more dangerous than most people doing them. Dunder Mifflin finds out exactly what Jim means when Dwight notices a discarded joint on the parking lot, most likely flicked by someone in the warehouse. Naturally, however, Dwight doesn’t think this through, assuming it must have been someone in his own office and demanding drug testing. As it would turn out, the joint didn’t belong to Michael, but he might have kind of smoked a clove cigarette at a concert, and he’s worried it might have been laced with something.

Question 20

What sort of solution does Michael look for when resolving conflicts?

With all the complaining Michael does about Toby, corporate, and their oppressive qualities in general, in no way does this mean he’s against the idea of executive interference into his employee’s lives. In addition to reading his staff’s emails, Michael later decides to go through Toby’s big box of complaints they’ve made about one another, forcing everyone to get along whether they like it or not. To this measure, Michael looks to a middle management handbook for the best conflict resolution strategies, ultimately choosing to seek a rather impractical solution to everyone’s issues.

Question 21

Who does Michael kiss after outing him as gay?

While most human beings in the modern era are aware that as Jan Levinson puts it, coming out is a significant moment in a gay person’s life, Michael has somehow lived his life without ever learning this message. Michael was also never told he shouldn’t make fun of people who are different than him, which is why he once made a bunch of gay jokes without thinking twice. As it would turn out, one of his employees was in the closet, and finds himself deeply offended. Rather than deal with things respectfully, Michael ends up kissing the guy to prove he’s not uncomfortable.

Question 22

What did Prison Mike think was the worst thing about prison?

Michael Scott is plenty fun when he’s just being himself, and this is only the tip of the iceberg in how Dunder Mifflin’s head comedian entertains/annoys his troops. He also loves to inhabit countless offensive and unforgettable characters, like his obese persona Michael Klump or the Asian stereotype Mr. Ping. If nothing else, Prison Mike at least wasn’t nearly as offensive as either of those earlier characters, and yet this didn’t make the persona any less absurd. In the end, Michael makes it clear he not only misunderstands the purpose of prison, but might also be a bit confused about reality in general.

Question 23

Who gives Michael the following advice?: “Secret secrets are no fun. Secret secrets hurt someone.”

Once again finding his judgment clouded by the allure of a party, Michael decides the office is a perfect place to host his friend Bob Vance of Vance Refrigeration’s bachelor party. Vance’s fiancé Phyllis gets to hang out upstairs with the girls enjoying a Ben Franklin impersonator hired by Jim while the guys rock out with man meat, loud music, and adult entertainment of the live, nude variety. The performance is cut short when all the relatively straight laced men feel extremely uncomfortable by it, and Michael eventually decides to tell Jan about it all after hearing good advice.

Question 24

Where does Michael take the office to decide his successor?

Immediately upon learning he’s up for a promotion that would take him to New York, Michael becomes totally convinced the job is his and sets out to find a suitable replacement. Naturally, the only people who could possibly fill his shoes are the ones he trained as employees, and thus his entire staff finds themselves in consideration for the job…except Pam, for some reason. Because this is Michael Scott we’re talking about, the man doesn’t consider sales records, people skills, or even general intelligence. Instead, he focuses on their literal ability to play games, taking the crew somewhere he could test their abilities.

Question 25

On which employee’s birthday does Michael test his survival skills?

Bummed out when Ryan goes on an executive nature retreat without even inviting him, Michael decides to take his own solo excursion into the woods one day, leaving Jim in charge of the office. This turns out to be a hell of a challenge for both men, as Jim failed to realize it was someone’s birthday and has some wild ideas on the subject when the situation comes up. Michael, of course, simply has no idea how to survive in nature, and nearly poisons himself before Dwight intervenes. On the plus side, Michael remembered the birthday, saluting his employee through song from miles away.

Question 26

Who briefly causes Michael to quit Dunder Mifflin and form a rival company?

Due to the way he behaves with employees and clients, it’s almost hard to believe that Michael has remained employed by Dunder Mifflin as long as he had. On the other hand, his two direct superiors during most of the show are an ex-girlfriend and an former intern of his, who both have emotional connections to Michael whether they admit it or not. After Ryan gets fired for committing fraud, an outside here comes in to take over, also scrutinizing Michael with a watchful eye for the first time in years. Ultimately, it’s enough that he decides to leave the company he loves.

Question 27

What does Michael place in Toby’s desk thinking its marijuana?

When the love of Michael’s life was forced out of Scranton to Nashua, it broke the man’s heart. Hearing the news that she would be replaced by the same man who held the job before her, Michael’s mortal enemy, Toby Flenderson, took it a step further by murdering his soul. Instantly, Michael decides the only reasonable course of action is to get Toby fired for being the worst, something he still doesn’t have the power to do. Left with no other option, Michael decides to plant weed in Toby’s desk, with the small caveat that he has no idea what drugs cost or look like.

Question 28

Which employee is Michael forced to fire on Halloween?

Being the Regional Manager of a mid-level paper company isn’t all fun and games, and Michael is faced with this reality a great number of times throughout his program. One of the earliest and toughest decisions he has to make is firing an employee on Halloween. It’s not like he can even give a good reason for the dismissal, as the act is mandated by corporate due to budget cuts, not an issue of performance or behavior. Throw in the fact this person hilariously decided to dress up like a hobo for the holiday and Michael has a real dilemma on his hands.

Question 29

Where does Michael find Ryan working when staffing his new company?

In his 40s and without many skills or contacts unrelated to the paper industry, Michael decides to start his own company after leaving Dunder Mifflin. His first hire is Pam, who in a moment of spontaneity quits her secretary job along with him, her sole request in the move being that she gets a promotion to sales. Michael is happy to oblige, but one saleswoman is not enough, so he seeks out his old best bud Ryan, knowing the kid could probably use a better job than what he’s been doing since getting arrested.

Question 30

Which employee quits Michael Scott Paper Company on the first day?

For the majority of its existence, Michael Scott Paper Company has only three employees: the owner/namesake, Pam Beesley, and Ryan Howard. In the beginning, however, there was a fourth wheel in the operation, and he was arguably the best salesman they ever had. The only employee Michael didn’t meet at Dunder Mifflin, this man used to sell diet pills with him at a telemarketing company, regularly earning the highest sales of the month. Unfortunately for MSPC, he was also smart enough to realize Michael had no business plan or hope for survival after the first investor meeting, thus going back to hocking Lipephedrine.

Question 31

What does Michael turn the MSPC offices into after selling to Dunder-Mifflin?

While it didn’t last long, the Michael Scott Paper Company ultimately proved a fruitful endeavor for all three main staff members. Michael got his job at Dunder Mifflin back, without Charles Miner’s interference holding him back. Pam got the promotion to sales she wanted, and Ryan also returned to Dunder Mifflin, overcoming a borderline blacklist from the company in doing so. MSPC’s offices also got a bit of an upgrade, no longer serving a place to simply eat cheese puffs, but now somewhere Michael could go to relax. If others want to join him, all the better. Answer: a café disco

Question 32

Whose mother does Michael date in season six?

In many respects, Michael never gets over Holly, but this doesn’t stop him from dating a few women while she’s away in Nashua. Certain occasions in particular bring out Michael’s romantic side, and it turns out plenty of people have this same reaction during lavish location weddings at Niagara Falls. The same night one of Michael’s employees gets married, he finds his way to the hotel room of that person’s mother, having surprisingly hit it off with her during the ceremony. Naturally, his employee isn’t all that happy about this, until they realize Michael’s kindness might be exactly what their mother needs.

Question 33

Which transfer from Stamford does Michael make quit on the first day?

Believe it or not, Michael’s absurd management style actually works once in a while. That’s not quite why Dunder Mifflin Scranton absorbs the Stamford branch in season three, as the reality was that his competition double-crossed the company and left them up a creek, and Michael was their only paddle. If anything, this merger was proof positive his management only works when directed at the right people, as only one of the Stamford transfers lasted for more than a single season. One of them even quit on the very first day, when a togetherness exercise backfired horribly.

Question 34

Who is the real estate agent who sells Michael his condo?

While Michael is at his happiest when working with the friends he calls employees, the man obviously has a life outside of Dunder Mifflin, as well. It might not be the most interesting life around, mind you—sometimes Michael just drinks wine and eats steamed vegetables until he’s ready for bed. Regardless of what he’s doing, Michael needs a home in which to do it, and that’s why he purchases a small condo with the help of Dwight and his long suffering real estate agent.

Question 35

What is the name of the action film Michael writes, stars in, and produces?

Forget about Prison Mike or Mr. Ping—the true star of Michael Scott’s character list is Agent Michael Scarn. Of all Michael’s roles, only Scarn could face the danger of Goldenface, an evil villain who makes a habit of blowing up stadiums during the All Star games of every major American sport. Goldenface already took Scarn’s wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones-Scarn, and he won’t let the mindless destruction go on any longer. Some five years after Jim finds the script telling him all this, the movie was finally made…only Michael never realized it was a comedy until Holly laughed at it.

Question 36

What TV show did Michael “star” on as a child?

Most people who call themselves fans of Michael Scott do so thanks to his work on The Office, and that makes sense, since he was there for nearly 150 episodes (if not quite 9,986,000 minutes). Way before viewers were welcomed into an American workplace, though, Michael had already made his television debut, standing next to Edward R. Meow for a special interview. On the downside, that same episode featured future weatherman Chet Montgomery, who turned out to be a huge camera hog from his earliest days on TV.

Question 37

Where does Michael meet Donna, his married girlfriend?

Still reeling over Holly and feeling like Pam’s mom was too old for him, Michael was back on the dating scene by late season six. Apparently forgetting what happened last time she tried setting him up, Pam makes another attempt at helping Michael find love by introducing him to a friend of hers who laughs at everything. Once again, things don’t go too well between them, but on the bright side, Michael does find himself heavily interested in the owner of the bar they happen to be in…even after she tries kicking him out.

Question 38

Where do Michael and Holly move together after leaving Dunder Mifflin?

In many respects, the final chapter in Michael’s life began the day Holly walked back into Dunder Mifflin. She was still dating another guy at the time, but it wasn’t long before they broke up and reunited with Michael. From there, it was literally a manner of weeks before he proposed, making a gorgeous presentation of doing so that could get almost any woman to say yes. There was one small catch, though, in that life with Holly meant he had to leave the office forever so they could be closer to her ailing parents.

Question 39

Who becomes Regional Manager after Michael quits?

The first time Michael leaves Dunder Mifflin, he does so free of any type of grace, physically intimidated into running away by Charles Miner. On his second exit, Michael goes out in glory, making it that much harder for his employees to accept the man who replaces him. This is a little ironic, as Michael was initially terrified they would like the replacement more than they liked him and sully his legacy, until he came around to realizing the guy wasn’t that bad. Either way, it didn’t last long, as a basketball accident put the guy in a coma mere weeks into the gig.

Question 40

Which employees’ wedding does Michael return to Scranton to attend?

Despite Michael Scott being the heart and soul of The Office, the show continued for two full seasons after his departure. These years had their ups and downs, with weirdos like Robert California and Nellie Bertram doing their best to fill in the gap left by Michael’s absence to varying results. Luckily, fans got one last glimpse of their hero in the series finale, when Michael returned to Scranton after several years in Colorado to witness a major life event for two of his closest friends. He also got to show off all of his and Holly’s kids.
