A True Super Saiyan Will Get 100% On This Dragon Ball Quiz

While the show is plagued by long arcs, fights that rarely have an emotional investment, and a bad case of the hero must always save the day, Dragon Ball Z rocks. In fact, one could even say the long-running anime...rocks the dragon.

But in all seriousness, what endears Dragon Ball Z to so many people isn't its various flaws but the iconic moments for a generation. You can forget about how long Goku's fight with Frieza is simply by remembering your awe at Goku going Super Saiyan or your frustration at Cell continuously recovering from the most devastating injuries when you recall Gohan obliterating him with the Father-Son Kamehameha.

For the most part, this quiz will focus on Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Z only, although there will be some references and questions about Dragon Ball Super with that show still airing. Both the original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT will not have questions related to their shows, although an occasional reference may be made. Movies from Dragon Ball Z are eligible as well.

With all of that said, get your weighted clothes on, set up your fighting stance, and prepare to do battle with the toughest Dragon Ball quiz you're ever likely to encounter.

Question 1

Roughly how many years does Dragon Ball Z take place after Planet Vegeta's destruction?

Imagine growing up with the original Dragon Ball series in Japan and learning so early on in Dragon Ball Z that Goku not only has a brother, but actually is an alien from the planet Vegeta...or Vegetasei. But, as we soon learn, Vegeta (not the prince or the king, but the planet) was destroyed in a meteor shower that isn't totally Frieza blowing it up with his Death Ball. Roughly how many years following the planet's destruction is Dragon Ball Z's Saiyan Saga?

Question 2

Frieza's son is named...

Believe it or not, Frieza has a son, though we have no idea how his species can reproduce. Is it through eggs? Is it through normal reproduction where he mates with a female? Whatever it is, Freiza actually has a son, one that's pretty much a spoiled brat but not as frighteningly evil as the warlord. Speaking of Frieza, why do we not have a name for his species yet? Are they Arcosians? Are they Icians? Whatever they are, answer this question.

Question 3

How many times has Goku officially beaten Vegeta?

One of the series' longest-running debate, and for good reasoning, is who would win in a fight between Goku and Vegeta. Would Goku come out on top, or Vegeta? Well, they've fought several times in the show with nearly all of those battles being interrupted in some form or another, but how many times has Goku won? Or, has Goku truly never won against the Prince of All Saiyans? Again, if you're getting this right, you're probably headed for a high score.

Question 4

Counting video games, Buu has never absorbed this character

While we only saw Majin Buu absorb Gotenks, Piccolo, and Son Gohan in the show, the video games and joke comics have allowed for what-if scenarios where the demon takes on aspects and powers from other characters. If you ever wanted to ask yourself what would happen when Super Buu absorbed Yamcha, that's actually a thing in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 and the demon's reaction is absolutely amazing. Buu is just so horrified at absorbing *Yamcha*! Which of the following characters does Buu not absorb?

Question 5

What is Vegeta's brother named?

Frieza has a son and Vegeta has a brother? What? Yes, Vegeta's brother was introduced in the 2008 "Yo! Son Goku and his Friends Return!!!" special in Japan, where it's revealed he was exiled because of a low fighting power. Awful. but there's some intrigue to such a character and it's a shame we haven't seen more of him since then. Although, he was confirmed canon when Bulma and Vegeta make reference to him against Beerus, so what is his name?

Question 6

In Namekian, Piccolo's name means...

Even in Dragon Ball Z's other races and cultures, the names still mean something. Piccolo's name, in fact, actually has a meaning in the Namekian language, even if it's one the powerful warrior didn't know for a long time - and, given he was dead when the name's meaning was explained, he still may not know. Isn't that interesting? Anyways, if you can figure out what Piccolo's name truly means without looking it up, you deserve a gold medal. What does it mean?

Question 7

Discounting Broly and Cooler, which movie-only character has appeared in other films?

Broly has had three of his own movies and Cooler had two, this we know, but there's actually another movie character to appear in another one. Before clicking on any of these names, remember that Fusion Reborn does not count and it'd have to have been in another move entirely. Flashbacks, clones, all of those count but them from re-emerging alongside Freiza in a portal to the Other World doesn't. Any wages on who has decided to return from the dead?

Question 8

Frieza's army is officially known as....

Oh, Frieza. Wherever this monster goes, he's bound to bring some soldiers around as part of his massive army, which actually has received several names over the years. Does Frieza work for the Planet Trade Organization, or does he command the Freiza Force? Super was able to clear the issue up and give his legion of loyal followers a canon name, but do you remember what the army is known as. If you get this right, you're likely to pass this quiz.

Question 9

The in-universe nickname for Son Gohan at the Cell Games is...

While there's plenty of moments in Dragon Ball Z that make the average human look stupid, their blind faith in Mr. Satan and what happened at the Cell Games screams either ignorance or denial. Did no one make a connection between the green man at the Cell Games and King Piccolo? Though no one knows it was actually Son Gohan who killed Cell, the teen was given an in-universe nickname by the population for him being the youngest there. That name is...

Question 10

This character has never, in any medium, created their own Spirit Bomb

"Remember that the Spirit Bomb is a martial arts discipline that allows you to borrow energy from grass and trees, from people and animals, from inanimate objects and the atmosphere... And then to concentrate them and release them. If you can draw so much destructive power from a ball made on this small planet... ...Imagine what you can do with a Spirit Bomb formed on Earth! If you can also learn to tap into the astounding powers of the Sun... Well. Just be careful. Or you may destroy the very planet you're trying to protect!" -- King Kai. Who can't use the Spirit Bomb?

Question 11

What is Mr. Satan's real name?

Believe it or not, not only is Mr. Satan a stage name, but Videl's last name likely isn't Satan either. Is your mind blown yet? Well, Akira Toriyama and plenty of other content have revealed what Mr. Satan's real name is...and in the grand scheme of things, the answer likely won't shock you. Considering Mr. Satan's character, who he emulates, and all of the other hits we'd received over the years, that the following is truly the man's real name makes total sense.

Question 12

Canonically in Dragon Ball Z alone, Goku killed this many enemies...

Like Batman, Son Goku has a no-killing rule, though we never quite learn why Goku was so accepting of it in the original series and so wary of it in Dragon Ball Z. Was it growing up and learning what he actually did was wrong, or was it simply the idea of sparing people to give them another chance for a fight? Regardless, Goku actually does kill people in Dragon Ball Z, but do you know what the exact total is?

Question 13

Krillin had how many girlfriends in DBZ?

Fans may give Krillin crap about nearly everything, but he's one of the few characters in Dragon Ball Z to actually succeed in their goals. Krillin wanted to eventually settle down and make a family and he landed Android 18, so good for him! But, was 18 the only girlfriend Krillin had in Dragon Ball Z, or was the monk lucky enough to have someone else? Even if you only watched Kai, this should still be a very question for you.

Question 14

Did Bulma and Vegeta, to our knowledge, have a wedding?

Weird question? Perhaps, but did anyone really see Vegeta and Bulma hooking up, let alone having a son? It makes sense in hindsight, but we're talking about how at the time Trunks explained where his lineage came from and how surprising it was. Obviously, we know now that Vegeta settled down with Bulma and raised Trunks (and Bra), but did they have a wedding to our knowledge? The image of Vegeta in a suit is one you have to admit is pretty funny...

Question 15

Piccolo, and by extension King Piccolo and Kami, are roughly how old when Dragon Ball Z ends

Piccolo's history is a bit difficult to explain, though we'll certainly try out best. Originally, a Namekian whose name has been lost to time was sent to Earth and auditioned to be the planet's guardian, but had too much evil inside him. So, the Namekian split himself into Kami and King Piccolo, the latter of whom 'gave birth' to the current Piccolo hundreds of years later. With all of that said, how old is the Namekian that is now Piccolo?

Question 16

Finish this Vegeta quote: "You bowed your head to me, your enemy, in combat."

What makes Vegeta such a compelling character isn't so much his arc of going from villain to anti-hero to accepting defender of the earth, but his pride. Regardless of how often Vegeta loses and is beaten to the brink of his life, the prince continues to have pride in himself and his race. These views are most evident in combat, even when sparring with his son Trunks or Son Goku, when he makes claims like the one above. Can you finish the quote?

Question 17

Cell does not have this fighter's cells inside him

When you're creating a fighter that has other people's cells inside him, what better name is there for the creature than Cell? Made up of people who include Son Goku, Son Gohan, Vegeta, and more, Cell was the deadliest and most unique character that Toriyama introduced to the series and remains a fan favorite. While there is a belief that Cell has every main character's cells inside him, that's a bit of a misconception, as shown by this character's cells not being included.

Question 18

True or False: Episode of Bardock is considered a canon story

Before Dragon Ball Super was ever a thing and the series was enjoying continued success thanks to video games, the Bardock hype train was one that allowed him to get his own OVA: Episode of Bardock. In it, Bardock is transferred to a past version of Planet Vegeta and becomes a Super Saiyan against one of Frieza's ancestors. Disappointing story, but it had its moments. Though most of the movies and OVAs haven't been confirmed canon, does the Episode of Bardock break that trend?

Question 19

Which arm does Future Gohan lose to the Androids?

Imagine being so surprised by Future Trunks' story, then hearing only Gohan - about six years old at the time Trunks arrives back in the past - is the lone survivor. Then, you get to see what Gohan looks like all of these years later and how the Androids disfigured him...it's heartbreaking, especially with Gohan's defeat and death by way of the Androids. We see Gohan lose an arm to the Androids, but which arm was it? Or, did he wind up losing both?

Question 20

What is the final power level registered on a scouter in Dragon Ball Z?

We're not even coming close to making an over 9000! joke, but we will briefly discuss scouters, power levels, and how both fell out of importance after Namek. Imagine how high the power levels would've been in the Cell and Buu Sagas? Who would have been the first to hit a power level in the billions? Trillions? When we last saw a scouter used in Dragon Ball Z, what was the power level? Hint: it was after the Ginyu Force's defeat.

Question 21

This Dragon Ball Z game was the only one released for the original Xbox

For the Xbox gamers out there who have become spoiled by every Dragon Ball game being on the 360 and the One, you may be surprised to learn nearly every PS2 game in the Xbox era was on PS2 or GameCube. Xbox didn't have Budokai, Budokai Tenkaichi, Infinite World, nothing like that. If Xbox gamers wanted a Dragon Ball game, they were likely stuck with this sloppy, terrible game that only lasted until the Cell Saga for some reason. Remember this game?

Question 22

What happened to Launch?

Officially, Akira Toriyama has explained disappearance of Lanch, a fan favorite with split personality disorder and a love for semi-automatics, as him simply forgetting about her. However, anime filler in the Buu Saga actually gave an indication as to where Launch wound up years after we last saw her drinking her sorrows away during the Saiyan invasion. Donating some of her energy to Goku's Super Spirit Bomb, Launch had turned to his life when we saw her for the final time...

Question 23

Future Trunks often gets this nickname

Where this nickname originated from among the fandom is beyond me, but it's an extremely popular one that's been around in America since Dragon Ball Z was still airing new episodes in the early 2000s, so who am I to say anything? Even when Super dropped and updated us on Trunks' adventures in the future, people were still calling him by this nickname. If you don't get this one right, you're excused, but I think the majority of people will land this.

Question 24

Vegeta's signature theme is commonly referred to as...

WIth the Funimation dub for the original Dragon Ball Z (not Dragon Ball Z Kai, which also is dubbed by Funimation), there were just so many fantastic musical scores and themes for each character. When you heard Vegeta's theme, you knew things were about to go down and Vegeta was about to do or say something completely badass. Though his signature theme is officially known as Vegeta's Theme, fans have given it a nickname over the years that sounds much better.

Question 25

How old is Goku when Dragon Ball Z ends?

This can be a tricky question because of different variables, so I'll put this as simply as I can: if you take Goku's birth year and take when he died, even with the eight total years he spent dead, how old would the legendary Saiyan warrior be? These aren't misprints - Goku was indeed around his 50s when the series ends and he goes off to train Uub, so he's passed the 40 mark with where we currently are in Super. Any guesses?

Question 26

Finish this Goku quote: "I've never really thought as myself as a savior"

Depending on what you look for in a superhero, Son Goku is either the perfect example of a great one or an awful one. Goku definitely does heroic deeds, but he also spares many of his opponents - a fair number of which try to kill him again. There's also Goku's obliviousness and no-kill rule, which doesn't even work for Batman. So when Goku is called a savior, all the Saiyan can do is shake his head and give this rebuttal.

Question 27

Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama said his favorite character is...

Whenever you create something, whether it be a standalone movie or an entire franchise, you're bound to have some favorite characters and moments of your own. Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama is no exception, having his own favorite arcs, fights, and even one character who he believes stands above the rest. Given said character's importance to the franchise as a whole and in popular culture, it's likely not a surprise when you learn that Toriyama's favorite Dragon Ball character is....

Question 28

Toriyama chose "Dragon Ball Z" because...

One of the greatest questions regarding Dragon Ball Z isn't why Goku and Frieza's fight didn't last five minutes (it was a line carried over from the manga, where such a line could have been true) or why Krillin never used the Solar Flare followed by a Kienzan (even I don't know the answer to that), but what the Z in the show's title means. Knowing Toriyama, it really could have been anything, but he explained the Z actually represented...

Question 29

Finish this Vegeta quote: "Every time I reach a new level of strength, a greater power appears to challenge my authority."

While Vegeta may not have some of the more infamous Frank Reynolds or Trevor Phillips-type quotes we've covered here on TheQuiz, it's hard to argue against the Prince of All Saiyans having some legendary lines. Most of them, as we all know, come in regards to Son Goku - or, as the prince has almost always called him (and we say almost always, we mean with the exception of one or two times), Kakarot. Can you finish the above quote?

Question 30

The man behind Goku's Super Saiyan theme and many other Funimation dub songs is named...

If you're like me and you grew up with Dragon Ball Z on Toonami and DVD sets, you know all about the Funimation's dub legendary soundtrack...which some American fans seem to really dislike. You're entitled to an opinion, but to hate on Goku's Super Saiyan theme, the Dragon's theme, Vegeta's various themes, and even the song that plays whenever there's a scene with the humans on Earth is crazy. Who was the man that made all of these songs we still hear in our heads?

Question 31

Which YouTube group lent their voices to the DBZ Kai Cell Games reenactment?

In recent years, Funimation and the American companies working on Dragon Ball Z Kai and Dragon Ball Super have had some more fun, including celebrity guest voices for background or cameo characters. In fact, Funimation actually enlisted a popular YouTube group to star in an episode of Kai's Buu Saga in 2017 where they lent their voices to the characters in the Cell Games reenactment. Despite breaking the fourth wall and making an over 9000! joke (which we are not doing), it was a good time for this group....

Question 32

True or False: DBZ was going to end with Vegeta's Final Atonement

Whether it's because of rumors or Akira Toriyama's words being taken out of context, fans have said everything from the Namek Saga to Goku's first death against Raditz was when the series would end. One such moment when the series was rumored to end as Vegeta's Final Atonement against Majin Buu, but is there any truth to this theory? Was Dragon Ball Z going to end up with Vegeta blowing himself up and taking Majin Buu down in a great ball of fire?

Question 33

Why does Future Trunks have purple hair in DBZ but blue in Super?

Chances are, a fair number of Dragon Ball Z fans were surprised not only when Future Trunks turned up again in Super, but was rocking blue hair. Remember, Trunks had those lavender locks in the original show, so what happened? Did he dye it? Was the show already hinting at Super Saiyan Blue? Well, if you paid enough attention to the show and the franchise, you're likely to get this one right, but make sure to get this one right if you feel like passing!

Question 34

Which Dragon Ball video game was the first to feature Super Saiyan Bardock?

Recent years and the addition of Dragon Ball Super seems to have stopped the Bardock hype train, something that seemed impossible four or five years ago. Goku's father and a dangerous Saiyan warrior among the best at purging planets, Bardock was popular enough to get his own short movie where he, when fighting Frieza's ancestor, manages to turn Super Saiyan. It's fairly corny, but Super Saiyan Bardock does look pretty cool. What was the first video game to give Bardock this form?

Question 35

This Japanese Major League Baseball star is referenced in Dragon Ball Z

Of course Dragon Ball Z, a Japanese anime that referenced baseball at various points, was going to namedrop one of the country's greatest players! What can I say? Even people who grow tired of Dragon Ball Z can still appreciate their baseball references. Who was the player?
